The New .17 Winchester Super Magnum

20gr Ballistic Tip at 3,000fps with 400ft/lbs of energy.

Just thought it was interesting.
I saw a hint of a new cartridge being announced, was a little bummed it was rimfire, but hey.

Wow a cartridge without a firearm to shoot it!

The possibility of an AR type platform is interesting to me.

Would make a great Varmint gun, and depending on ammo cost, could be a bad ass plinker.

I'll be all over it if I can shoot it out of a nail gun, otherwise it's an expensive sub-caliber that does less than a .223.

That will be GREAT for Connecticut coyote hunters. Shotgun aside, we are only allowed rim fire cartridge 22LR and smaller. I will be paying close attention to this one for sure!

It's interesting, though I can't imagine buying one.

It seems like this would be a worthy competitor to the .22 Hornet...

For people who dont reload that'll be a great round. I love my 17hmr but I can shoot 223 reloads for cheaper. Its still fun doping the wind and elevating with the hummer though.

Looks neat but it all comes down to the cost of the ammo and rifles. It's hard to beat .223 Remington.

It's a niche caliber, it won't be for everyone.

If the price is low (cheaper than .17 HMR) and I can get an upper then yes I will be on this like white on rice. Mostly the the skunks, opossum, squirrels, and fox on my property will be waving that little "the end is near" sign. It has to beat .17 HMR though in price or it will be like 5.7x28, a very cool round to shoot but a niche round that is too expensive for what it is.

Honestly, I don't understand why somebody doesn't just come out with a centerfire .17 for the varminters.

I'm a big fan of short mags and super short mags. My favorite bolt gun is a .25 WSSM.

Why won't it beat the price?
The main advantage from what I can see is they're already manufacturing the cases. They're already tooled up. Now they just have to put a .17 bullet on the end and put them in a different box. There's less capital investment and the fixed costs are going to be offset with the construction industry sales. Or rather, firearm cartridges will reduce the costs of construction industry sales.

It's a win win for the manufacturer, and if the cartridge doesn't sell like hotcakes, it was a minimal investment compared to introducing a completely new cartridge.

We'll see, but 22WMR and 17HMR are not cheap (at least not cheap like .22lr).

The cases are only part of it. Doing the R&D and setting up to mass produce the cartridges is something else...

And, as somebody pointed out, somebody needs to develop guns to fit this little wonder, becuase it won't fit in any existing guns.

Maybe this will be the Next Big Thing, but maybe it'll be the next Betamax...
