FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH - HIGHWAY 260 WEST OF GRANTS PASS
Posted: January 5th, 2013 9:23 AM

Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Friday night's single vehicle fatal traffic crash along Highway 260 (Lower River Road) west of Grants Pass that resulted in the death of a Grants Pass man.

According to Sergeant Tyler Lee, on January 4, 2013 at approximately 9:13 p.m., a 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser driven by JOHN NOVESKE, age 36, from Grants Pass, was westbound on Highway 260 near El Camino Way. As the vehicle negotiated a right curve, it traveled across the oncoming lane onto the dirt highway shoulder until it struck two large boulders. The vehicle rolled and NOVESKE was ejected.

NOVESKE, who is the owner of a local rifle manufacturing company, was not using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

OSP troopers from the Grants Pass and Central Point offices are continuing the investigation. Trooper Ryan Neuenschwander is the lead investigator.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Rural Metro Fire Department, ODOT and AMR ambulance. No photographs for release.

I responded to another officer requesting assistance on a nearby, notoriously crappy parkway. Car jumped the divider and went head on with an access a ride bus and livery cab. 4 adults hanging out every which way and a 10 year old girl with her leg severed at the thigh. All DOA, no belts. Seen more accidents with belts and people survive. May Mr. Noveske rest in peace. I'll pick something up from them when stock catches up again.

I had the privilege of chatting with him twice on the phone. Both times, he was kind and patient with my many questions. I am sad that he was taken so early, but I am exultant that he lived, and shared, and provided the means to save the lives of so many fine people.

His weapons were used by warriors, to defend the innocent. I would be proud to have that as my epitaph. With Mr. Noveske, it sounds like it was a way of life.

My condolences to the Noveske family and the staff at Noveske Rifle works. I had the great opportunity to meet him and his family, he was quiet, a man of few words on the outside but he was a keen thinker on the inside. He was proud to have served in the US Army and was very patriotic. He cared deeply for his family and friends.

I was humbled and honor to have known him and his family, he treated you as part of his extended family. He had a great love of the outdoor and lived life to it's fullist. When I first met "Johnny", as his family and friends called him, he quickly asked if I was interested in taking a ride in his boat. With a quick smile, I said sure. Once he got to know you, he was happy to share with you his interest.

We walked down to the river bank next to his house and went off on his boat. Johnny loved the natural beauty in his own backyard and did not mind sharing it with folks. I will miss his love of life and his passion for his wife and kids. He was very proud of his two boys and daughter.

My few words cannot describe what a great lost it is for his family and close friends in Grant Pass. I am only grateful I got to know him and shared some good times with him. Cheers Johnny.

I am deeply saddened by this loss. John and I go way back. In early 2000's, I was a dealer on ARFCOM and all the rage was SPR "style" barrels. These barrels were rarer than "hens teeth" as no barrel manufacturers was mass producing them. While reading a post on a forum, I saw reference to this guy named Noveske who was making AR10 barrels out of PACNOR blanks. There was little to no info on him and he (at that time) had never made a 5.56 chambered barrel.

So I took a leap of faith and contacted him about making me some SPR style barrels. We immediately hit it off and formed a friendship. He made the barrels and I marketed the name "Noveske" on several forums. I pushed hard to sell his barrels. With his adherence to quality, his name quickly grew amongst AR enthusiasts.

Noveske was both a perfectionist and innovator. I have never seen a company scrap (or label blems) so many parts as him. If it was going to have his name on it, quality was priority one!

For those that do not work in the firearms industry, there are many unethical, backstabbing AHOLE's. People that will flat out lie to your face. Noveske was one of the most honest and trust worthy people I have ever met. His name was everything to him and he was always going to do the right thing (no matter the cost).

Several years ago, Noveske and I were chatting on the phone and he said something to me that I will never forget. He gave ME (G&R Tactical) credit for his companies success (meaning getting his name known across the internet). At the time, I laughed and blew it off. Looking back at it now, it takes an EXTREMELY humble man to say what he said to me. I tell this story not to stroke my own ego, but to paint a picture of the guy John Noveske was. The truth is, Noveske Rifleworks grew not because of some lowly dealer, but because of his work ethic and attention to detail.

I will miss you Mr. Noveske. You have taught me a lot and for that I am eternally grateful. Your name will live on and always be remembered for quality and integrity.

One of the lowers from John's first run.

great post, Grant.

I never met John but I talked to him on the phone a few times, I bought my first N4 in 2007 and several since then.
The most accurate rifle I own is a 6.8 Rogue Hunter. It out shoots several custom boltguns I have..

Just watching a cheesy movie with my son, the Expendables. I smiled a bunch of times when I saw the Noveske Pigs on a bunch of M4's.
I try to avoid linking to other forums, but in this case I'll make an exception:

Reminds me of the Tactical Tailor dude's untimely highway death. :(
I was thinking the same thing--same age range, both former Army, same general part of the US, etc.
Very tragic.

I did not know him personally, I only knew him through his fine reputation and quality work. I am lucky enough to own and use a N4 Light Carbine, and it is a fine piece of workmanship.

My condolences to his family, friends and co-workers. Rest in peace, good sir, and God spede on your new journey.

There is a good chance John packed that box, he was working in shipping for the last few weeks because of the panic. Look for MFJN on the packing slip...

Noveske Rifleworks is working normally, rifles were built, barrels turned, backorders shipped. John wouldn't have it any other way.

How are you doing Todd? Is everybody hanging in there? I haven't called, because I'm sure that's what 5,000 other people have been doing all day. Sometimes these things take a while to truly set in. Praying for the Noveske crew.

I was lucky enough to have met John and some of his crew. When he found out I was a cop from Alaska he invited me into the shop and gave me the tour personally. I remember he was late because he had gone to pick his children up from school. I later learned from a friend that his children and family meant everything to him.

On that tour I was so impressed with the quality of his products that I ordered one of the first 12" Crusaders with Switchblock for my M16. I now have several Noveske rifles in a myriad of lengths and all are amazing!

As soon as I rotate home off of this work tour I will be headed to the range to shoot that first Crusader upper in remembrance of John. Because as he told me that day in the shop "don't baby that rifle, it's a hard use tool"

Gods speed John, guard the gates of Heaven, no doubt you'll be we'll armed.

I never met or dealt with Mr. Noveske nor owned any of his firearms, sorry to say. I have however been doing this firearms thing for a long time and know from long and sad experience that the typical customer service treatment ranges from indifference to near hostility. From what I have heard and read John Noveske was way, way, way above this poor standard.

I was truly saddened by this news.

I first learned of Noveske back in 2006 I think it was, from a police officer buddy who moved up here from Arizona. He spoke of Noveske rifles as the greatest quality M4 variants. He raved about them.

We will all remember Noveske as a leader of the industry, an innovator, a great mind.

Louder Than Words has made a $500 donation to the NRA-ILA in honor and in memory of John Noveske.

I don't want to try and turn this thread but as an NRA member himself I'm thinking John wouldn't mind: now is the time, lads. They think they can do whatever they want-- don't be an enabler by remaining silent. Don't put it off because they aren't. Remember, this blue ribbon panel, completely devoid of credibility as it is, will hand in its recommendations at the end of the month. There will be nothing good in there for us or this country.

A membership is only $35. Small price to pay for being counted as one of us... otherwise they are counting you as one of them.

I just found out about this from my brother. He was far too young.

Rather than a t-shirt, I'd like to see a special run Noveske lower with moose's design, maybe sold slightly above cost with the proceeds going to one of his preferred causes.

My first lower years ago was a Noveske. Wish I kept it. I have replaced it with more Noveskes, but the first style was very different. It looked just like Grant's and had the 5.56mm caliber mark still.

Wish his family/work the best of luck.
