The new 787 Dreamliner had a string of problems last week from a battery fire to leaking fuel to brake problems to a cracked cockpit window.

Now they have had another in-flight battery error which triggered an instrumental shit storm in the cockpit, prompting an emergency landing in Japan. Both Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have grounded their 787 fleets, which account for half of the 50 Dreamliners Boeing has delivered to date. Boeing stock took a hit last week on the previous reports of problems, but had recovered most of the lost ground. Be interesting to see what happens when the market opens tomorrow.

Somebody's gonna be makin' some bank. Wish it was me.

I don't like the idea of short positions on major American aerospace companies, even if I did have some kind of precognition of this fiasco.

Just my thing. Flying is freedom.

Wanna bet all the problem planes were built in WA?

FAA just grounded all US-registered Dreamliners (after the close of trading). This only affects six 787s delivered to United Airlines but I bet the folks at Boeing are chewing a lot of Rolaids right about now.

BA is a strong company -- for people who have BA long in their portfolio, this is called a 'sale'.

BA could shift production to its next-gen 737 orders.

Co's got something like a 7 year order backlog.

And it's already written in the cards that they're not going to make money on the first 1,000 dreamliners anyways.

Damn good call Dave!

Seems they had many 'wild cards' when it comes to their sourcing. Hopefully they can recover.

For now I'll stick to SWA and the 737-700, -800, 737NGs, etc.

Good article ... and it ain't fixed with the old switcheroo:

Changing the battery wouldn't be as simple as swapping one out for another type, said a person directly familiar with the jet's design. The 787's integrated architecture is anchored around the quality of the power from the lithium ion battery. Any change in supplier or design would be "a pretty significant challenge," the person said, requiring layers of modificationfrom hardware to controlling software to adjust for a new battery.

"You start changing the variables the second you change the established and certified system, you have to change all the tentacles that are attached and that are reliant on that battery," says Carter Leake, a former airline pilot and senior equity research analyst for BB&T Capital Markets.
