Did EDM license the updated M96 to Remington? Everything about this says to me "Windrunner with Bill's magwell upgrade but new forend, brake and scope base".

Pistols - Ruger SR1911 & Remington R1 Commanders

Bolt guns - Ruger Guide Gun, Remington Model 783 or Browning A Bolt III for a hunting gun.

Shotgun - The new Beretta 692 are very sweet.

Rifle - NEMO Omen hands down. I sure would like to get my hands on one.

No, I sure didn't, my fault. We were talking about the changes/addition to the mag release.

You could ask over on Walther forums. IIRC at least a few folks have put a can on theirs.

The PPQ is really nice, but be aware for some reason they didn't put sights that will clear a suppressor on the Navy. Or at least on the original. But as far as I can see in the pics, that doesn't appear to have changed.

This will be the first of many threads to go up on M4c this year. I do apologize for the delay since SHOT show flu kicked my butt for a good week.

Here we go.....

This year, HK broke cover on their 416A5, which was build and designed based on a requirement by the German Spec Ops community, this updated and revised version of the 416 will be utilized by the KSK and the likes within the German military.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1110138.jpg

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1110137.jpg
Notice the revised gas block to enahble easy of gas port asjustment for suppressed or unsuppressed shooting.
Also notice the longer rail now covers the gas block assembly.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1110134.jpg

Updated rail locking screw, it is no long the cross cut that enable the use of a bolt lug, this is a simplified design with just a slot cut.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1110143.jpg

I also notice a roll pin on the upper receiver near the rail. I asked the HK rep at the booth but he did not know the reason for the added roll pin. I assume it is there for the piston rod or some sort of a guilde for it.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1110076.jpg

The rail address is now reconfigured to allow more rail slot for better accessories mounting across thre rail and the upper receiver.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1110074.jpg

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1110072.jpg

The most significant change to the 416A5 is the lower receiver, it features the mil-spec mag well and ambi controls.
The reinforced wall around the controls is interesting. i have heard both augment for and against it. I personally don't palm my bolt catch, I use my thumb to deactivate the catch so the added wall around the controls does not bug me as much as some others.

The enlarged buffer tube castle nut is for the sole reason to pass the German army drop test, the added length enable the gun to be dropped from additional 5-7 feet higher.

Most of this updates we witnessed on last year's G28 sniper platform that won the German army contract.....so you can see the extension of those thoughts on the updated HK 416A5.

SMGLee,

Is the A5's buffer system different at all in terms of buffer weight, buffer tube length or spring length? The reason I ask is because whenever I hear of the A5, I think of VLTOR's buffer system, which some people have used in conjunction with their 416 uppers.

It would be nice if HK incorporated that adjustable gas block into the MR556 upper they sell. Any word on that?

I'm perplexed as to why HK created a STANAG magazine adaptor for the G36. Did some govt agency request it for AR compatibility? I thought the G36 mags were better. Kind of defeats the point when they're selling HK 416s.

MountainRaven

I like the looks of the 416A5's lower.... Too bad it doesn't look like the improvements are going to carry over to the MR family, except in the 7.62mm.

Any chance you got pictures of the "new" HK45 tacticals?

As for AR-15 mag wells on G36s: Steyr makes a stock for the AUG that takes AR-15 magazines. It only makes sense: They are part of NATO and virtually all of NATO uses AR-15 magazines.

It's probably bad lighting. I'm sure outside under natural sunlight, it's more of a coyote brown/ FDE.

Care to elaborate?

Ergonomic:

Standard height rail, full rail to rear most length (allowing for better 4X ACOG placement), and ambi controls (which I bitch about a lot.)

Better placement of integrated sight, better integrated sight.

Design:

Adjustable gas block, better positioning of adjustable gas block.

I know nothing about the castle nut, or roll pin, but they look reassuring.

USGI mag wells allow for PMAGs of all generations.

I've never shot a 417 so I can't be too critical, but the sheer amount of unnecessary weight on those things is enough for me to move on. I'd really like to see a side by side comparison with a 417 and MWS.

Rail is not "standard height" - its just the rear does not swoop down.
Hk was next to us, and I went visiting a few brief seconds to hassle Dale etc.

My guess is their pinned a alignment sleeve on the upper for the op rod, never disassembled it - but that makes sense to me.

Like Kevin B said, the rail is the same height. It has to be, due to the op-rod.
The lack of rail all the way to the rear has not been an issue with the optics we use, when it comes to eye-relief etc. We have had ambi selectors, but not ambi mag release or bolt catch. Agree that full ambi is nice.

There is nothing wrong with the integrated folding front sight we have on ours. The one on the new version is the same that is on the HK417. That rear sight, however, is pure crap. The elevation and windage adjustments are too big to make good adjustments when zeroing.

The AGR we have works just fine, especially after the design change.

As for the magwell thing, the old HK416 accepts all Draft STANAG 4179 mags. The PMAG is not Draft STANAG 4179 compliant.

There might have been some improvements made, or other design features implemented based on user feedback (we gave feedback on the stock), but to state that this is fixing ergonomic and design failures is just plain wrong.

Ah. I was wrong about rail height. It looked standard to me.

I've shot a 4X ACOG in awkward positions a bunch of times, and it sucks to due eye relief. It's not even a 416 problem, it's a problem with all flat top M4s. The only way it would stop sucking is to remove rear BUIS and mount it in front of the ACOG. Which you shouldn't have to do. I feel like the full rail should solve that problem.

As for the new front sight, I can't speak to it being better for sure out of experience, but it looks like it'd be better from pictures. The old one looked flimsy as hell. Like if you dropped the gun with BUIS deployed it'd bend or something.

The rear looks like shit. As you'd stated.

I also wasn't saying that the old AGR didn't work, I meant that the AGR didn't seem to be present on most of the American guns, or guns in the US Military supply system. (So I've heard. I'm not military so I can't back this up.) So actually having the AGR is an improvement.

As for the magazine well thing, it may not be STANAG compliant, but a lot of US servicemen use PMAGs, and I think the M27 IAR might even have been the reason why the Marine Corps banned polymer magazines. (This is what I've heard, but cannot confirm.)

The use of a USGI magazine well means that M27s can use PMAGs, and we can get more of them in the system.

Might not be an issue for you guys, but I've heard a lot of guys say it's an issue for us.

That said. My opinions are formed based on the information that I have, which probably isn't as much as somebody who uses the system as issued. Or full time. But I believe my observations still hold true for many.

Can't help but see some KAC influence in the move to ambi controls and an integrated BUIS. Glad to see that they now take standard PMAGs (why couldn't this be done when the M27 was introduced?).

Thanks for the great pictures.

Wait, the M27 will now take Pmags?

Where was this stated? It looked to my like the M27 at the booth had the standard/old-style HK416 lower, not the 416A5 lower.

Everyone knew i have been a EOTech kool-aide drinker for well over ten years now, I was EOTech before EOTech was cool..well, I guess that is somewhat subjective...LOL, but this year, my main focus at their booth was more directed toward the Insight military vs. the EOTech brand. I have been asked by Ken Hackathorn at SHOT this year on what I thought i can't live with out....I thought about it for a second, and said..."did you see the AN/PVS-31? that is my next to buy to replace my current PVS-15." to my surprise, Ken actually agree with me that he thought the PVS-31 was a very unique and interesting product for SHOT 13.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1100698.jpg
The updated AN/PVS-31 is direct replacement to the older PVS-15, it is lighter(almost as light as a PVS-14), it is more versatile, and image are much better.

HK seems to have adressed a lot of the 416's ergonomic (and maybe design) failures.

I really like the look of the new 10.5'' CQBR gun.

There are no failures.....

Just improvements I see.

Funny how HK & KAC are always neck & neck, best companies out there for sure...Good thing they were next to eachother at shot show, would have saved me half the time of walking around if i was there, best part of the show for sure.

Removing the Nub on the pistol grip is a welcome addition, more like the BCM version(I own that grip too :)) the ambi controls look great but I find it interesting to see which I would like more between HK & KAC.

If anyone can compare them I would love to here there thoughts?

The protusion by the Bolt catch is a welcome addition on the G28, wonder if that will be done to all the HK line in the future?

Great pics by the way, good stuff.

http://www.heckler-koch.com/typo3temp/pics/4796af3649.png

It is, like I said in my previous post, a crap sight. Elevation and windage adjustments are too crude, making it quite difficult to get a good zero. At 30 meters, one click of windage is 0,9cm and one click of elevation is 1,2cm. That equates to 3 cm windage adjustments and 4 cm elevation adjustments at 100 meters.

In addition, the locking mechanism is very bad, so the sight has a tendency to fall off during movement; I'm talking everything from patrolling to bounding during contact.

We are getting a new version after giving HK feedback, that includes a simple locking feature, preventing accidental release of the lever.

ETA: The one in the pics is the new version with the locking feature.

Re the magazine well. There is no standard for the mag well, only the magazines. The HK416 came on the market before the PMAG, so saying that the mag well was a design flaw isn't really correct. Not putting down Magpul, as I would like to use the EMAG or Gen 3 PMAG myself, but the issue lies with the early gen PMAG not being STANAG spec. I understand the frustration.

I think the Norwegian mil is the only organization that has a system with an AGR on a large scale. Ironically enough, on the new guns we are getting the AGR is removed, it comes with a standard gas block, even though suppressors are being looked at as an accessory for wider fielding than just SOF.

The ACOG does have short eye relief, so that compounds the issue a bit.

The old front sight is solid enough. Bending it if dropped is a concern, but most keep it folded down while using the red dot.

I'm not totally sure why they chose to not go with the AGR on the new guns, but I suspect that it stems from the perceived issues we had with the version before the modification. I think that the NDLO is afraid that the AGR has become a point of uncertainty among some units, that it is viewed as unreliable, so they decided to just remove it.

That mount and pressure pad are from streamlight. You can get it all as a kit. Thats how mine came.

Cool, my experience is a few years old when they were simply shipping a pressure pad...or the user left that part off. :)

This year SIG unvealed a new subgun chambered in 9mm, 40SW or 357 SIG. this little gem is highly configurable so caliber changes only involved a few parts and can be done quickly on a depot level.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1110446.jpg
As most of you might say, who still use a 9mm Subgun? truth is the 9mm subgun is still prevalent throughout the world. So I think the market for a updated modern 9mm subgun could have legs in the mil and LE areana. and not discounting the large American civilian gun market.

This gun is designed by a ex HK engineer that took the issues that associated with the MP5 and designed a platform that did away most of the complains of the MP5. Even the control surface are very M16 centric for best available egronomics

My compain is the retractable stock can be pull completely out of battery and detach from the gun very easily. that is something SIG will have to address.

This is extremely interesting from SIG. some of those have seen it, will recognize the so call muzzle brake on this civilian legal, ATF approved MPX as the baffle stack from a HK MP5SD. and as you can see, the front of the "Muzzle Brake" is threaded. and SIG sell a tube and end cap that will go right over the "Muzzle Brake" to turn it into a suppressor. of course the tube is numbered, Marked, and it is tax stamp required.

My guess is that it's like a Winchester Model 70 and you can't run the bolt not fire the weapon on one, you can run the bolt but can't fire the weapon on the middle, and you can both cycle the bolt and fire the weapon on the third. Just a guess though....

That makes sense, kinda. What were the issues you guys had with it before?

Did you guys ever have problems with the AGR freezing up in colder temperatures?

I have posted on the HK416 in this thread, so for more in-depth information, go there:

http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=92876&highlight=HK416&page=4

Short version is that the NDLO did not allow end-users to disassemble the AGR for maintenance, so it had a tendency to pop out or wiggle the the supressed setting without user manipulation due to gun powder residue build up. This was in direct contradiction to HK's own instructions, stating to clean it every 1200-1400 rounds. We modified it, so it's now a non-issue (and would have been initially if it hadn't been for NDLO retard policy).

No issues with the AGR freezing up in the cold. Cold issues is not a HK416 particular issue, it goes for all guns. If you do not apply proper field maintenance to any gun in cold weather conditions, you will have problems.

So yes, we have had fire controls, charging handles etc freeze, but those issues are due to improper field care, not because the weapon is crap.

The Aimpoint twist mount has been a very simple and very effective design to add a magnifier to the red dot sight. It has often been mentioned by users that the Aimpoint solution for mounting the magnifier to the red dot are more effective than the flip to side EOTech design. wait no more, TNVC released a mount for your EOTech magnifier to run in-conjunction with the Aimpoint twist mount and TNVC also released a PVS14 ring that will give you the ability to run the magnifier or the NVG behind your favorite red dot.

Mossie Mount for Troy Flip up sights.

As you observed it replaces the stock lock nut from the Troy BUIS. Rock solid and allows me to run the light without a tape switch ( I hate tape switches.) That set up worked perfectly on the Fortis rail with that 300 BLK upper.

You are an exemption with XM8/SCAR. Most of people scream "ACR clone - they should sue!". Actually initial prototypes were more influenced by SCAR, but this changed over development process. Internally very different from all 3 of those (except general layout of short stroke piston with multilug rotating bolt).

Bulpup is designed for maximum parts commonality with regular rifle (all internals of upper are same). Upper receiver will be milled out of same extrusion. Bulpup (in long barrel version) will use same grenade launcher. Interesting feature planned for bulpup is trigger finger magazine release (ambi). Bolt release will be Tavor style (back of magazine well).

Hay thanks for the run down, the parts commonality is very cool. I'm interested to see a trigger finger mag release, to me it screams "oops I meant to drop the mag sorry for shooting you in the back ALOJZY".

When you look at photo of bulpup mockup, there is a button placed on side of lower receiver, above trigger. Exactly same spot as on regular version. So trigger finger must go outside triggerguard to reach for it. You also use trigger finger to operate M4 mag release, and G.I. Joe seem to not mind. Alojzy is safe as well :sarcastic:

ADM is another one of those under the radar manufacture that continue to turn out extremely well designed QD mount to feed the optic market.

True to their testament, ADM mount and QD lever was selected as the mounting solution for the FN SCAR-H SSR/Mk20. This mount is now being manufactured by FN in house as the OEM mount for the Mk20 as it is being supplied to the end users.

That's actually an LA-5/PEQ (high power version) and not a PEQ-15.

It is listed in the Insight produce guide as the AN-PEq15 family, which consist of the PEQ in various colors, laser options and upgrades such as LA5.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ss13/huge/P1100901.jpgThis is interesting... it looks like their SS Drop-In Two Piece rail but without the delta ring. I'm guessing it's a free float version that bolts directly on the barrel nut. But does it use the handguard cap?

My concern with this bolt-on rail design is that the small sections are held on by only a single button screw, which is threaded in aluminum. No steel backer plate. Could a sharp blow to whatever the rail is holding shear the screw right off?

Oh, i misspoke. I am a civilian, i don't wear camo to work. When i buy stuff like plate carriers or helmets i prefer them to be solid colors like coyote brown or gray. I have nothing against multicam, I just have no use for it personally. If i were going to a hostile environment I would want multicam.

I have a bare airframe and i don't want to put the multicam cover on it, i would prefer something else.

I don't disagree that the pattern is nice but the color selection is my biggest gripe.
Multicam works because it has multiple colors and blends in with multiple environments. (no other camo has been able to achieve this level of multi environmental capability)

Kryptek has specific colors and patterns for specific locations.

That's why I think multicam is the best.

the 'mesh cap/hat' is the Night Cap - a soft alternative to the skull crusher NVG head mount. it's for using NVGs when you don't want to use a helmet. folds up and stuffs into a sleeve pocket. obviously not as stable as a helmet, but there's always a tradeoff.

while the Airlite plate carrier is super light, it's a minimalist carrier and won't be a comfortable as one with more padding.

i'm really liking the new AVS (Adaptive Vest System), which is an incredibly modular system that bridges the JPC and the CPC and is StKSS compatible. the JPC was my favourite plate carrier until they debuted the AVS. soldier systems has the 2013 Crye catalog on scribed - http://soldiersystems.net/2013/01/22/crye-precision-2013-catalog/, so check out the descriptions to SMGLee's photos there.

as Vash pointed out above, comparing multicam to kryptek or any other environmental-optimized camo is apples to oranges. an extreme example would be some of the very specific hunting patterns that are photo-realistic representations of particular environments, and work better than anything else in those environments, but nowhere else.

an optimized-environment pattern is always going to trump a multi-environment pattern in the AO it's designed for, but also comes with its own set of issues when going from one environment to another (sometimes in the course of a single day), and logistical issues.

No. Archers are made only with 1/9" barrel, as this is standard twist selected by Polish military for wz. 96 Beryl. Archer barrels are made is same batches as barrels for Beryls, so it is not possible to change twist. And most of people like it to have same twist as "real Beryl".

BTW 1/10" twist advertised by IO is an error that they seem to be unable correct. How they came that 228mm equals 1/10" is a mystery. 228mm is in fact 1/8.98".

Have any changes been made to the operating parts? BCG/op rod, ect?

The mag well change was much needed. There is no such thing as STANAG 4179. The reason for the magwell is for use with the British blank mag, thats the sole reason. LAV mentioned this in one episode of Tac-TV

Arctic1
02-12-13, 13:27
The STANAG, 4179, is still the standard used when talking about that specific magazine design, and it is referred to as Draft STANAG 4179. Does HK's high reliability mag fit in the M4? Does a USGI aluminium mag fit the HK416?

The answer is yes on both, because both mags are STANAG compliant. If the PMAG was STANAG compliant, it would fit all weapons made to accept STANAG magazines. The HK416 came out before the PMAG.

Rich Fitz even said on LF.net that the PMAG was designed for the Colt maqazine well. ( http://lightfighter.net/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/7206084761/m/62920930863/p/2 )

Nobody is denying that there is a difference between the magwells, and not denying that the HK416 mag well hindered the use of PMAGS. I'm not saying that the maq well design was even smart, but it is not HK's fault that the early gen PMAGS didn't fit.

The point is moot anyways, as the new Gen 3 mags work. Also, the new gun has the USGI magwell, so user's who have early gen PMAGs can use them (if they get hold of the weapon that is).

As for the internals, I highly doubt any changes have been made. Although I don't know.

Maybe not a "special order". Just that customer can specify if they want "old" or "new" lower. There is probably price factor involved. Ambi lower will be also variable for HK417A2.

BTW P-Mag compatibility is non issue for HK military customers, as none of them officially adopted P-Mag. AFAIK only UK military officially adopted Magpul magazine, but it is E-mag, that is specifically made to be compatible with weapon systems using STANAG magazine, like SA80 or HK416. And STANAG 4179 might not exist and "signed paper", but it exists as reality. I know old Soviet saying that "if reality do not fit theory, too bad for reality", but this time it is other way round.

Have you personally felt a comfort difference?

Yes. My wrist used to hurt like hell after a long range session. I use a very aggressive isosceles stance and keep my rifle tight in to my body. If I'm standing there, I'm usually in a low ready position. That puts a hell of a lot of strain on my wrist.

I have big hands so the K was just too small, I went back to a large MIAD and sometimes a MOE+. The Gunfighter Mod 1 is bigger but the top portion of it still feels small in my hand. The K2 looks like its closer to a MIAD large, that is why I'm exceptionally excited about it...

And it's listed on Magpul's site now :dance3: Duane, any rough ETA for it?

You make the BNVD-G sound like it's a boat anchor, when it's actually the lightest of the dual tube systems, weighing 22.2oz. The PVS-15's are slightly heavier at 22.9oz and for comparison's sake a PVS-14 is 12.4oz.

I just saw the neck torque study done on the PVS-15 and the PVS-31. Weight is 7oz less. That's right at a 1/3 weight reduction but the neck strain is reduced by 1/2-2/3. It's even less when they are folded flat in the stowed position.

The advantage is far more than just losing 7oz.

David,

Thanks for providing some actual numbers and the intel regarding neck strain reduction with this new BNVD system. From some of the pictures I've seen of the PVS-31, it seems like these NODs also utilize a COPS/backup battery system like the ANVIS.
