View Full Version : Budget .308 Bolt rifle??
looking for a cool little .308 to mess with doing some medium range shooting 2-500 yards. nothing crazy, and i want a .308 and since ar market is retarded right now im gonna go for a bolt, been looking at the ruger scout, remington 700 sps tactical so far.and input? wanna stay under 700 for the rifle.
Defoors did a "Everyman Hunting Rifle (http://kyledefoor.tumblr.com/post/32826327608/everyman-hunting-rifle-part-1-the-action#notes)" write up and build awhile ago you might want to take a look at it. He ended up spending $1100 for everything.

I sure like my Ruger Scout Rifle... but I'm allergic to anything that doesn't have a detachable box magazine.

I have both. The rem is much much heavier and is not as easy to shoot off hand. Its very accurate in comparison though. Removable magazine is a huge plus and the scout is very handy and well balanced. Scout magazines are still available online

the scout had a 10rd mag
My point exactly. 10, 5, & 3 round mags in either steel or polymer are available for the RSR.

It's not a cheap conversion for the rem 700 either

Savage arguably makes the most accurate out-of-box budget rifles out there. I would look at their Model 10's ...
Or for your budget ... you can slide into a Tikka T3, which is another excellent entry-level rifle.

Ruger Scout
I picked up a savage stevens in 308 a few years ago for 200 bucks. Extremely dead on right out of the box, right at 1/2 minute. A bull barrel and Bell&Carlson stock with Rifle Basix trigger later and it shoot 1/4 minute or less all day long.

How about the Ruger American Rifle?
My brother bought one in 243 for my nephew. The thing ran him 329 bucks and he put a 150 dollar Nikon on the thing and got 1" groups at 100yds with cheapo factory ammo.
Not bad and well under 700 bucks. Get the rifle for 329, a decent scope for 150-200 and a bipod and you're still under 700 bucks.
I am thinking of picking up a Ruger American when the 22-250 version comes out.

+1 Ruger American Rifle walmart has them for $320.00

Wouldn't the Ruger American not be a good rifle for target shooting because the barrel will heat up quickly and throw off accuracy?
I originally wanted a Ruger Scout but there were none to be found. Went with Rem SPS. If your budget is $700 the Ruger is more.
Academy sells rem 700's in .308 for $379.00
That Ruger American in .243 has my intrest also.
I have a few bolt actions in both 308 and 30.06. I've always been partial to Savages which are also reasonable $$. Although the Stevens line is more so.
The American or something in that $$ range would probably fit your needs as described.

I would go for the Ruger Scout Rifle. Nice gun, I just wish Ruger would lighten the barrel a little.

My brother bought a Ruger American in 243 for my nephew last fall.
We slapped a cheapo Tasco 3x3x40 scope on the thing and with factory ammo at 100yds...the damn thing threw 1.25" groups!
Yeah...a rifle that cost 329 bucks with a 60 dollar scope. Who knew?
Amazing, for the price...if you ask me. It also had a detachable magazine that was rotary like the 10-22 mag. A pretty neat set up and it had a much better trigger than the Savage Apex rifles.
When the Ruger American comes out in 22-250...I want one!

How much do those Ruger Scouts go for?

Since this thread is about cheaper (under 700) rifles can you guys shed some light on the savage vs the rem 770? Both in .308 can be had locally for $350. What one will I be happier with? For me it'll be a dedicated hunting gun as the range I go to is only 100yds so no long range target shooting for me.
I'm not going to make a purchase tomorrow or anything, I know nothing about bolt guns and this seemed like a good thread to join in and try to grasp just the very basics.
Savage is putting out better guns these days than Remington.
My 700 AAC couldn't hold 1" groups, and it rusted when you looked at it wrong.
I sold it for a Savage 10FP, and that gun shot .43" 10 round groups at 100y with Hornady TAP.
For functional, accurate, bolt guns... Savage is hard to be.
Their accu-stock is good to look at if you plan to leave it in the factory stock. Otherwise bell and carlson makes a good rigid stock at a competitive price.
Another vote for Savage here. Have a model 10 w/ accustock/accutrigger & the factory detachable mag. Lot's of gun for the $$. Plenty accurate for my skill level with long range shooting at the moment.

What is the advantages to the savage accutrigger vs the standard trigger? Is it adjustible or what? If I get a rifle with a accutrigger and I want to replace the trigger down the road do I have to get an aftermarket accutrigger or are they interchangeable?
Can I put a factory savage accutrigger on a savage rifle without it?
Do I need to avoide guns without it or is it ok either way?
I have no experience with any other Savage triggers, but the Accutrigger is adjustable for pull-weight & comes with a tool to adjust it. I haven't felt the need to adjust mine as it felt good to me out of the box. Certainly better than the trigger on the one R700 I have. I don't really have any desire to upgrade my Savage so haven't spent much time researching from that point of view. I think there's stuff out there but not to the level of the Remingtons. As far as swapping accu/standard Savage triggers I have no answers for you. Might want to try savageshooters forum for specific info.
I've never owned a Savage but the "Hog Hunter" has some interesting features: 20" medium contour barrel, threaded 5/8x24, 1 in 10" twist, nice iron sights (in case your scope fails). Might find one for around $500.

The accutrigger is good enough that you won't need/want to replace it. It's adjustable for pull weight, yes.
There was a change made to the actions, I believe, so the accutriggers are not backwards compatible.
Just make sure you don't try to adjust the accutrigger to too low a weight. Under 2# and you can have issues.
If you need lighter pull, you can get a Riflebasix, Sharpshooter Supply or one of the other big name triggers. You can even sell the Accu for a little cash

You cannot put an accutrigger on an older savage. As for modern savage rifles: do u even have the option of another/standard trigger? I don't thonk so.

For cheap I really like the American. Seems to be reviewed good. I plan on buying one in the next month. For the price if I decide I don't want it I'm sure I can sell it.

Just over $400 around here lately. I've got one on layaway. The beefy barrel and iron sights were the hook for me.
