Does anyone have a Tundra with the smaller 4.6 V8?

I've been looking at them and was wondering what kind of real world mpg people are getting. I ask because everyone I know that has a Tacoma or a 4Runner actually get better gas mileage than the EPA rating. The 4.6 Tundra is rated only 1-2 mpg lower than the smaller vehicles.

I was a mechanic for Toyota back in 2003-2005. If remember correctly the epa rated them at 14-16, most owners complained that it was worse. The Tacoma with the 4.0 has more power than the 4.6 and gets better mileage. If I were to buy a Tundra it would be a newer one with the 5.7 or the Taco with the 4.0.

I purchased a 2007 tundra when they came out with the new body style. I purchased the 5.7 engine because I was told it got better mileage than the 4.7.

My truck was extended cab and 4x4. I got 17-18 on the highway and 16 in town. I would get 19.2 on pure interstate running premium fuel.

I sold the truck and now run a Titan.

I like the tundra, but the Titan feels more like a truck. Don't get me wrong the tundra was an awesome truck, but it had a funny bounce to it that made my wife car sick.

I had a 2005 4.7 Tunda it did 15-16 mpg I could get 19 if I did 60mph on the highway.
I now have 2011 Tacoma 4.0 auto. I can get 20mpg if I drive 65mph highway. If I do 65-75 I get 17.5mpg. I use a Scan Gauge II to monitor my mileage.

There's a bit of wtf in this thread.

The 2uz-fe engine is a 4.7L not a 4.6. Your expected mileage will vary depending on the year of the truck, the pre 2005 (iirc) have a 4 speed auto while the last couple of years before the body style switch had a 5speed and vvti which will get better mileage and make more power.

The 4.0 in the newer gen trucks make more horsepower on paper but the 4.7 has more torque and a flatter torque curve so I would say has more useable power, especially for a truck. Having test driven a 4.0 4runner and a older gen V8 4runner the V8 felt faster and more powerful.

My wife's gx470 with the 4.7 gets between 17-18 with mostly city driving. I am guessing that the tundra being rated lower has more to do with aerodynamics than weight or size but I could be wrong.

Y'all might want to read that. Toyota changed to a 4.6 liter V8 in 2010. The new small V8 makes 310hp and 327tq and is rated at 15 city, 20 highway and 17 combined for a 4x2. 4x4s drop a mpg. The new engine is said to be more effecient.

So I ask again does anyone have a 4.6 liter V8 Tundra that can let me know a out its real world mpg?

I bought the 2012 TRD with 5.7 I-Force to haul what I needed to haul... The 15 city MPG is the price I pay to have the capability without going full-blown diesel... Towing drops to below 10 MPG...

I have a 2006 Tundra Double Cab 4WD with the 4.7 V8.

My mileage is not great...maybe 14-15 city and 18hwy.

However...I do have 33" tires and a 3" lift. I also have the heavy Ranch Hand steel bumpers...so my Tundra is not a good gauge for mileage.

However, everybody knows that the Tundras do not get good mileage.

You buy a Tundra for it's reliability...not mileage. Hell...it is a V8 pickup....not made for great mileage. LOL

I have almost 200k miles on this truck and it has literally given me no problems at all. The most reliable pickup I have ever owned and I will NEVER buy another Chevy or Ford pickup.

The Toyota Tundra has Glock-like reliability.

I LOVE this pickup and will always drive a Toyota pickup from now on.

My '11 CrewMax 5.7L averages 16.4 according to the mileage computer. That's a pretty good mix of highway and city driving. I've heard other Tundra owners say the smaller V8 doesn't get the same MPG.
