View Full Version : Magpul UBR from Top Gun - old packaging - LEGIT!

Well... after the fiasco of receiving a foliage UBR instead of black, I took the advice of others and ordered a black one from Top Gun Supply. They were very quick to ship. However, when I opened shipping box, the package looked quite different from the foliage stock I had received. The box, though not marked PTS is orange in color instead of the black and gray that I'm used to seeing. It looks and feels authentic, but even the instruction manual is different.
I've been ripped off before by sellers trying to pass off counterfeit Magpul gear and it usually comes in an orange box...

Can anyone verify if Magpul changed their packaging on these recently or did I get duped? Is Top Gun reputable? Maybe they got duped?

Thanks...

EDIT: No need to read on... It is a legit UBR and I couldn't be happier... thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.

Contact MagPul. I'm, sure they'll be more than happy to help you out and if it's a fake, they'll want to know

I've bought some MBUS sights in brown/orange packaging and they are as authentic as ones in the bags. I don't think you have too much to worry about

I handled a fake black UBR (as well as imod, acs, and sopmod) at a gun show this past weekend. Seller admitted they were counterfeit and the kit was going for $100. It had the weight, the feel, and all of the features of the real deal. However, small intricacies that were off that just didn't meet up with magpul standards.

Definitely contact magpul directly with as much info as possible because the fakes are pretty damn good ones.

Looks authentic to me.

My box for my CTR and MOE hand guards are the same color and I've had them a while.

I've noticed the boxes for Magpul stuff at my LGS are different so you probably just got a NOS one.

Just got done correcting an issue with a fake CTR. I don't know how to spot a fake UBR but you may be able to use the fake items in these two links to inspect your item.

http://thecounterfeitreport.com/product/227/

Look on the bottom of the box and see what it says. There is a pic of the box in this link

There are some good fakes out there so protect yourself. Scrutinize it.

That's legit packaging, and it's from a reputable dealer. I'd say you're good.

That is their older packaging. I have 3 magpul stocks (not UBR) that I got a few years back and they all came in similar looking packaging.

As others have mentioned that is their older packaging. Always good to check when you have any questions but I'd say you are GTG.

Pretty sure that is how my ACS was packaged a while back. Looks legit from what I can see. I doubt that a reputable dealer would get duped or try and pass off fakes to his customers.

Holy fking chill out. I don't know the vendor but they are probably trying to run a business. Posting their name and "FAKE?" simply because you don't recognize the box is not appropriate behavior. Contact them or Magpul if you have concerns. Checking the text/cage code, screws and etching on the RE are also two second tasks.

And the UBR is an awesome stock, so you did good.

I have the same stock and that is the packaging mine was in. Looks good to me.

I also have to agree with "nml" thoughts on the matter, you should hold off on naming any companies/vendors until you have contacted them about any issue you may have.

Just this morning I contacted a very well known manufacturer about an issue. They had me take pics to make sure my item was not counterfeit and once that was cleared they told me to ship it back and it will be replaced.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease. It definitely feels real. Luckily I had the foliage version that was accidentally sent to me to compare it with. They were for all intents and purposes identical except for the color. There was one extra little stamp mark on the undside of the stock body/receiver extension on the foliage version but then I realized it's probably just from a different batch - like stated earlier - NOS - an earlier UBR. No stickers either!!! Oh well, I have enough Magpul stickers anyway. Here are some pics of my project I'm working on. I'm going to switch the lower to an Umbrella Corp lower, add a BCM Gunfighter mod 4 latch, a new muzzle device that I haven't decided on, Mepro tritium front sight post, ladder covers, a XTM handstop, some kind of light (undecided), and some kind of short ranged fixed or 1-4 optic with QD base - always been an irons shooter, but getting into optics recently and have no idea what I'm doing.

Excuse the messy background.. didn't make the bed this morning.

Stats so far:
BCM mid length upper receiver group 16" with Centurion C4 12" rail -
BCM-URG-MID-16-BFH-C4-12
BCM M-16 BCG
Aero Precision lower
PSA lower parts kit (sans FCG and hammer/trigger pins)
Geissele G2S trigger
Magpul MBUS2 front and rear
Springco Blue Spring
LMT H Buffer
Magpul MOE grip
Magpul UBR with .77" buttpad
Magpul MOE trigger guard
Lancer AWM5 30 rounder with 75gr TAP
(not shown) Magpul MS3 sling

Project cost so far after taxes and shipping: $1529 (not including ammo)

Of course the stuff I mentioned will add to the cost...

The balance is fantastic! Though it must weigh more than my Sig, it feels much lighter and more maneuverable. A true testament as to what proper balance in your rifle can achieve. I'll post pics when it's done in the proper forum and also of my other projects.

Did I do good for a beginner on a somewhat limited budget?

EDIT: The box is from the hard case I bought for it. Now I need one for every rifle.

I wanted to believe it was real, it's just that all the magpul stuff I've bought lately seems to come in a box with a much darker color scheme. Plus, I had purchased some MBUS Gen 1 PTS sights for my brother's airsoft gun years ago and it came in a box with the same exact colors. I've seen friends show me two nearly identical Magpul parts - PTS aside, there are master Chinese counterfeiters out there now who are
producing nearly indestinguishable parts and selling them as real - that's why I refuse to buy from Ebay unless from a VERY reputable seller. For instance - stay away from user american_foods or whatever - everything they sell is fake. Everything. I didn't mean to down the reputation of the company - in fact the order was handled in a very timely manner and the package arrived much quicker than I thought. I'm impressed. The UBR is an awesome stock!!! I think I made the right choice.

One of the best dealers out there. And your acknowledgement of this and apology to them?

Shao
01-28-13, 19:37
Yes of course, it was never meant to slander them - many reputable dealers are known to be duped into buying counterfeit inventory from unscrupulous distributors. I was merely asking everyone's opinion if they thought I had gotten a fake. Like I said - I will be using topgun in the future with no worries. I am truly impressed with their service and shipping speed. They get an A+ in my book.

I'm relatively new to all of this and just didn't want to get screwed - I've heard too many horror stories and have personally seen counterfeit Magpul gear that was indistinguishable from the real thing. I never meant to imply TGS was intentionally selling counterfeits, I was just thrown off a little that the packaging was so much different than the UBR I had just received... and thanks! She's my new favorite rifle and I can't wait to get somewhere to thow some lead down range.

Tom, I never meant to seem like I was attacking your company - on the contrary, your CS and shipping speed is light years ahead of anyone I've ever used - right up there with SKDtac. Thanks for getting it out to me so quickly - I have absolutely no doubt it's real. You run a tight operation and be expecting many more orders from me in the future... and thanks again for taking the time to post that!

Something has to be done about all this knock off crap. One only has to look at aliexpress.com to see that everything from Magpul, DD, Noveske, and LaRue are all being shamelessly counterfeited and sold at ridiculous prices. It wouldn't surprise me if at least 50% of AR furniture and sights listed on Ebay are fake. If said member who sold you the fake UBR knew it wasn't real, I would find him, place a small incision in his scrotum, and insert a lit firecracker in the hole.

Sorry to continue the dogpile but you should have taken your concerns directly to TGS first.

Just a polite suggestion and I aint a mod for sure but maybe you should edit the title of the thread, seeing as how the issue has been resolved and the even the dealer has chimed in. Just my .02.

TGS is one of my favorite dealers.

Point taken... I was impatient to get my build finished and didn't know how long it would take TGS/Tom to reply so I decided to take it to the panel of experts here first. I've learned my lesson.

I could not agree more! However, I don't think he knew and I am waiting for a response to my pm I left earlier. I'll get some pics up of the UBR I received and it is a damn good knock off. It doesn't have Magpul on the hex screws, has the smoother texture, and doesn't say patented any where on it. Needless to say, I don't trust it on my rifle and it's coming back off.

svtpwnz, comparing these 2 pics makes me think your UBR is fake as well. Shao's says "MAGPUL IND CORP PATENTED" which is correct, I've never seen one of their products say "MAGPUL INDUSTRIES CORPORATION" like yours does, altough I do not have as much familarity with all of their products as other members here.

I think you should send these pics to one of the Magpul guys like Dozer for verification.
