The source of this is : Garand Collectors' Journal , Spring , 2008.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program received about 115,000 guns from Greece last year.

The shipment includes 100K M1 Garands , 12,000 M1 Carbines , plus some '03's , 03A3's , M1C's and M1D's.

There are also "between 500 and 750 M1A1 folding stock Carbines"
in the Greek shipment.

Sounds like CMP has enough to keep them busy for quite a while.
If they can survive after the elections.

Quick and dirty answer:

M1C--scope mount attaches to receiver. Uses standard lower handguard.

M1D-- scope mount attaches to block on the barrel. Uses short lower
handguard.

After seeing the M44 carbine thread , I thought it might be re-run time.

The best source for historic USGI brown guns. That's part of what Congress told them to do, and they do it very well.
