Hey guys,
I am wanting to send my SA MC operator to someone to have the front strap checkered and have the gun refinished, possibly all black and do away with the OD green frame. I am somewhat new to 1911's and have help a couple of 1911's that front strap checkering were too aggressive. The TRP comes to mind. Now, I have seen some confusing info to me that dictates how aggressive checkering can be or may not be. So, fill me in on the terminology of this and also tell me what the most durable finish is. I saw some info on Springfields custom shop page that list several finishes, but it's all greek to me.
Thanks.

I've heard good things about Wilson Combat's Armor Tuff. I'm sure they would do the front strap checkering as well.

I would also look at Hatsfield Gunsmithing to see if their proprietary 'Hatsfield Cuts' might suit you as well. I finger f*cked one of them and it felt good. Might not be for everyone though.

I highly recommend the SACS (Springfield Custom Shop). Hilton Yam and LAV have both stated they are good to go. They do great work and their wait time is measured in "weeks" not years (Excluding ordering a Professional) like some other well known smiths. They offer standard parkerizing (phosphate finish), Armory Kote (spray on coating that is then baked), Black T (surface treatment used on the Pro as spec'ed by the fibs), and Hard Chrome I believe. Armory Kote is done in house with I'm sure parkerizing and turn around time is quick, Black T finish is shipped out and takes up to months as they ship in batches. Armory Kote and Parkerizing are both decent finish and will hold up fine, just keep the parkerizing oiled. Black T has the best corrosion resistance of the bunch but will also show the most wear (if that's important to you).

Also, check out Chris James at Combat Precision and Alchemy Custom Weaponry (who was a form SACS employee).

Even though my 1911 is a blued one, I prefer good ole parkerizing and as far as checkering goes, I prefer 30 lines per inch. Not too raspy but just enough to hold on to.

Another vote for the Springfield Armory Custom Shop. I have 2 of their pistols. Both run great.

I'll throw another recommendation to the Springfield Custom Shop, for the reasons others have given, great work and fast turnaround.

Another vote for Sam Hatfield. He's done a lot of good custom work for me, but his backlog is long. Of course, he's in my backyard so I'm kind of biased, but he's a hell of a good smith.

As previously stated SACs. Call and check their turn around times, seems they have been creeping up from the 10-14 days of years past to 45+ days.

There are plenty of good smiths posted above in the stickies give them a call. Usually about thos time of year Chuck Rodgers offerrs up some 'Tax Time Specials'. His proprietary balling might fit your needs and he does nice coating work. http://www.rogersprecision.com/
