Just wondering where everyone is finding ammunition these days and is it a steady source or just bits and pieces?

I've had the best luck with Natchez. Definitely not a steady source though. Make sure you watch gunbot. (www.gunbot.net)

Walmart, here and there. Plenty of shotgun and hunting stuff, .45 colt and .40 hollow points.

My Walmart hasn't had shit since the election almost.

Wal-mart for me as well. Just get lucky every now and then. I snagged some XM193 from Brownells last month too (should have ordered 3k when it let me). I think since the panic set in, I've managed to snag about 700 rounds of ammo and 450 of that was .22LR.

I went to the local WM Friday and all they had was Federal Premium "deer thug" loads in the various hunting calibers (.30-06, .308, .300WM, .300 Win Short Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, etc.), 3 & 3 1/2 inch steel bird hunting loads, some .410 and .22-250. Was going to get some .308 and .300 WM to lay in a supply for future plans, but the guy at the sports counter was more interested in selling fishing/hunting licenses than $100 of ammo.

Our walmart has nothing , I went to cabelas monday to buy an otis cleaning kit, they had about 8 boxes of crap steel case 223-5.56
i walked to get the cleaning kit and came back and it was GONE!!

I never thought i would see the day when you couldnt get .22 ammo. The local gun store here called CCI and asked about the .22 thing and they were told that CCI doesnt know when it will be putting any out. This could be B.S. by my local gunstore, but if its true were is all that ammo going? i know people are buying like crazy, and could understand about 5.56, who knows whats gona happen with that, but .22 really, what the heck?

You hear the stories about homeland buying up ammo, their even buying .32 acp, I thought i was the only one with that caliber anymore LOL. That old colt is really old. I also wonder when all the crazyness is over, all the people that are buying ammo for investments, are gona lose their butts when the markets flood with all the surplus thats gona be out there? Theres people buying ammo for guns they dont even own.

Walmart at 0200 is the only thing that works for me.

It depends on the caliber you want. I have found .45 ACP, .40 S&W, .380 Auto and .38 Special at Wal-Mart, Gander Mountain and Bass Pro Shops. Hunting loads for .308, .30-06 and 6.8mm are easy to find, but pricey. The calibers that are hard to find right now are .22 LR, 9mm and .223 Rem.

But does anyone know why .22 is so hard to find???? I can understand 9mm and 223-5.56. But .22? Is this what people are going to defend themselves with???.. lol...

Because this is cheaper to shoot. Some people still need their trigger time fix.

Kokopelli

I think that has a lot to do with it as well. That and the huge numbers of people that mostly shoot 22 all the time. They typically stock in thousands anyhow and this has just made it worse.. Ron

The same places I have been buying from for the last 7-8 years. Ammo is something that I am pretty much always in the market for in one form or another. The ammo I buy today in most cases wont be used for years... Try and find a couple good sources and then stick with them, build a solid relationship over time and you'll always have ammo available.

Hell, you can also just go to wally world once a week, even if you can only buy 300 or 400 rounds at a time, it will add up. You don't always have to buy 5k-10k rounds at a time to end up with a solid assortment of ammo.

Another thing to consider is trying to get your collection set up where you only need 3-5 calibers. I have it down to 2 pistol (9mm/.45ACP) and 3 rifle (5.56/.308 / 7.62X39) makes it a lot easier and cheaper to stock up...

But does anyone know why .22 is so hard to find???? I can understand 9mm and 223-5.56. But .22? Is this what people are going to defend themselves with???.. lol...Locally, 22LR was the last thing to disappear off the shelves. I guess after all the 5.56, 7.62 et al was gone the masses figured to get it while you can. Most would not consider the .22LR a worthy defense load, but seldom do I leave the house w/o my Beretta 21A in my pocket. Quite nasty with the hyper-velocity loads. A good deterrent at least and just so dang portable.... If I were in a known high crime area, yes I'd be carrying something bigger, but I try to avoid ghetto territory...

Exactly what I'm doing now...Not sure why I didn't figure this out sooner...guess I always had to have that new gun/caliber etc...purging and consolidating.

I diligently watch gunbroker for decent prices with buy now options. I've had decent luck with it surprisingly. Shipping is reasonable or free from a lot of sellers with buy now also.

Cabela's in Hamburg, PA (biggest one in the US) is all but sold out of most ammo. They had a bunch of crap 7.62x39 and a surprising amount of .300 WBY/WM/WSM etc. I did get 2 boxes of .300blackout, 4 boxes of .30-30 and 2 boxes of .17HMR last time I was there, but I bought them out of all but the .17.

Be sure to check your local mom and pop shops. I have had good luck finding 7.62x39 and 5.56 sitting on shelves in the back. Could be old stock in some cases, but will give you some trigger time. Many of these places have not upped their prices to total panic levels. And deals can be made.

Check the local hardware stores as well as smaller gunshops. Ammo varies by locale. Homeland security isnt buying .32 acp though, its not an issued caliber by any stretch.

Fleet Farm still has a pretty good selection except for 9mm & 5.56, which can be hit 'n miss. 40 & 45 is plentiful. I just stocked up on several hundred rounds of AK & 308 ammo.

Cabelas gets random shipments of random things. We had a bunch of Golden Sabers come in and then we got a shipment of PMC 9mm. I got a few boxes, but they are sent to the floors and rarely does anyone get dibs. I usually run out on my lunch break to grab what I can, but by then most is gone. I missed 1k of small pistol primers by about ten seconds, saw the guy grab and go just as I got out there.

My source is my reloading bench! Any one who wants to shoot a fair amount regularly without going bankrupt needs to reload. Stocking up with component when they are available ( primers are tough for those that did not stock up) keeps you from having to scramble in times like these. Always look out for close out deals ( odd bullet weights or powder types) and you can keep your guns running a long time on the cheap during these times. If you cast bullets it brings cost down even more. I can reload a lot of calibers for half to 1/3 and sometimes even less that current prices. My 223 reloads run me under 20 cents a round and my 30 cals under 30. My pistol ammo goes about five bucks a box.

Exactly what I was going to say.

It kills me that last summer I was buying federal .223, 500 rnds for $130 locally.... I know that once this is all back to normal I will make sure I never get low on ammo or reloading supplies. I had what I thought was a good sized stockpile, just a couple of months of this panic has my normal training rhythm out the Window.

but I guess it isn't reasonably priced

bulkammo.com has a variety of rifle ammo and some handgun ammo at reasonable prices.

just picked up a can of 5.56 Federal for $420.... 438 with shipping, which is what most of the stores were selling it for prior to the rush
I don't look at $1 per round as a reasonable price.

Just find it locally.

Randomly.

Pick it up when I find it, and I refuse to pay overinflated prices. Scheels and Wally World have kept there prices somewhat stable.

Screw Gander Mountain and my local gunshops. Their prices have been a little ridiculous to say the least.

Me too.
I did buy 800 rounds of .45acp a month ago at a reasonable price from psa and 2160 rounds of 5.45 from wideners at a price a little higher than I liked.

And I traded a guy 500 rounds of cheap 7.62x39 (I never shoot my ak) for 500 rounds of good brass 9mm.

I used to do that... well not a barrel.. but a cat food bucket. I'd load the bucket up with my dillon... then shut down the machine and shoot til the bucket was empty.

I find my ammo in my closet. Has not ran low for years. when it does the presses will be running double time. I hope it holds out, because i only have a few hundred hornady 55 sp, and close to a 1000 matchkings. The rest are high end hunting bullets that i do not want to use for paper punching.

Local store had powder, primers, and bullets until last month. Overnight it was gone. When things get back to normal i will start buying again, but not until then. When they do get to normal i will purchase enough components to last at least twenty years. Right now i have enough of everything except bullets for 5 years.

Online when I find it. I usually buy a lot at once and sit on it. I am weathering this panic just fine actually. I did have to go and buy some more .38 but given that my only gun in that caliber is an airweight I do not worry about keeping a lot of it around .

Last .223 I purchased was at a gun/pawn shop. Three boxes for $9.98 each. Not too bad considering some folks are charging $1.00 / bullet or more.

I'm hitting at least three Wal-Mart stores a night as they stage freight in my area on my commute home. Some days nothing, other days I'm walking out with a case of something, I know I know three box limit. The night shift people either a.) don't give a flying f*** or b.) they don't know the policy. I'm also hitting two different Academy Sports & Outdoor stores on the way to work. From them I'm getting several boxes of IMI M193, Tula 7.62x39, various 9mm, etc. every week. A box here, a case there, it adds up.

I refuse to pay gun show and online panic prices. I do not NEED any more but as I can find it I'm stacking it deep. YMMV.

3 Walmarts and my local Gander are bare. I will pay the price for a box or two from my lgs ($17/20) when I absolutely need to fire off a few rounds. Never needed .223/5.56 until the wife got me a nice M4 for XMas but purchased a couple of days before CT. I'll bulk up when this mess passes and prices get back to some semblance of normal. Heck, the last 5K purchase of .22LR was at .038/ea and now I'm seeing .10+/round that I find just ridiculous. Fortunately have a decent amount of that left but as summer approaches, I'll be looking for some more and will make sure to stock up on it if prices come back to earth.
