View Full Version : Is the Colt really that much better than the S&W M&P 15A?

I have a really nice S&W M&P15A that I picked up about a month ago. It is really a step up on the previous AR's I have owned (Del-Ton/DPMS build comes to mind). Mind you I have NEVER had any problems with any of the AR's I have owned either with accuracy or reliability.

I just came from a pawn shop where they will let me put a very nice Colt Gov't Carbine A2 ( the sucker really looks almost BNIB).The price is $1200 for the carbine. I never really saw the need for high-end optics on my AR's (a bolt action is another story) so I don't really need the flat-top (A3). I also don't plan to have this rifle as a safe queen. If I get it, it's to shoot it! What I want to know is: Do I really gain that much if I get rid of the S&W to get the Colt?

I know Colt has an almost religious following, what I'm looking for is an honest no B.S. opinion from an unbiased person.

Yes. The Colt uses M4 cuts, 1/7 twist, H buffer and better barrel steel.

The S&W is a fantastic value though (especially with the $100 mail in rebate going on right now).
