Soooo I did it..... I cut up a Pmag.

And now i have a 18rnd Pmag ( I could not quite get 20 [ oh yeah on a closed bolt])

here are some measurements and where I cut.

Here is the cut Pmag. (note the ribs were filed down where the end cap goes on. i needed to do this on all 3 ribs and file down the front so it was flush with the rest of the mag)

Here it is next to a colt 20rnd.

I also cut down the follower from 1.168" to .738" ( and the follower does not tip and does not get stuck halfway down the mag).

How many rounds (Hint 18 :D ).

Sooo you might be asking how durable it is??? I have a hammer, a loaded mag , and a anger problem ( i hit the mag in all directions including down on the base plate as to knock it off).

And here it is on a closed bolt loaded with 18 rounds

The only problem that i foresaw was that the ribs did not stand out as far from the mag as the lip on the bottom that holds the base plate on.

if you need any other measurements let me know and i will write them all down

Oooo i hope this does not hurt to bad

Do you mind if I ask why? Not knocking anything just want to know what the advantage is? Thanks

So i can be tacticool like Stickman

No really i got some black Pmags today and i didn't like the color of this one, so if i ruined it i did not lose out. That and with ammo prices these days I give my buddies the 20 rounders so we shoot slower and cheaper. ;)

20"s are shorter and better for bench work, and when prone.

I work with guys that run 20's and 30's. They carry general blasting ammunition in the 30's and specialized ammo in the 20's. That way they know what's what without much thinking about it.

Well that does make sense, thanks :D

Well at least I did not hear that I ruined a perfectly good Pmag.

All i need to do now is to take it out shooting or send it to SuicideHz ;)

May be good info for the NJ folks who can only have the 15's. Maybe the next rib up would be 15? Or leave the follower alone and cut where you did?

Here's a pic of my PMAG 20 project.
I get a full 20 in and it runs perfect. It's great when you have to use it prone in a match.
It looks like you cut yours one rib up from where I did mine.
ETA- I did not modify the follower and I cut 4 coils form the spring.

I was really afraid for him when he told me he was going to post it up here. I thought you guys were going to tear him a new one!

I was really hesitant to hack up a perfectly good brand new PMAG.
But I really like em and wanted a 20 rounder for bench work like sighting in and in matches.
I haven't chopped up another yet, but if Magpul doesn't release some soon I may have to get out the Dremel again.

Hmmmm...Have to look at my 9mm ProMags next. :D

How did you fuse the 2 parts back together?

pearson

i didn't the ribs that you see in the mag i thinned one up so that the base plate would fit on it, and the bottom half is trash

First I have ever heard of or seen this phenomenon. Are they still durable enough to use for purposes other than target shooting after all that work?

i have dropped it out of my gun fully loaded and with a hammer hit down on the base plate trying to knock it off fully loaded and so far i have not had a problem yet.

why not some one else try one it is only 15 bucks and and 45min of your time

I've done the same with mine. I dropped it fully loaded from my rifle onto the ground a few times before I trusted it in a match.
Last thing I wanted was the embarrassment of the baseplate shooting off and dumping the rounds during a match.

This all is Magpul's fault... for teasing us with the PMAG-20's for so long. :p

You must make for a very high, vertical profile... ;)

Can't get low in the weeds with a 30rd'er... but neither can my fat a$$ :D

Pearson,

Arms-n-ammo produces 15 round P Mags for $20 a pop. When I first got mine , they looked like they were factory produced. You should give them a try. They have black, foliage green, and orange.
