I've been wanting to get a .17HMR for quite some time now and turn it into a precision rig since it's so cheap to shoot.

I've finally found a few rifles 2 hours away at a Cabelas. They have a Marlin XT and a Savage Arms with the accu-trigger.

Does anyone have any experience with the .17HMR bolt actions and knows which rifles will preform better? Or is there another manufacturer that makes them better than the others?

Savage TR is a hell of a package. Great stock for a little rifle.

I've tried the Savage, shooting up some prairie dog towns, and it's certainly a nice rifle for the money.

The best/nicest .17HMR rifle I've ever shot is a Ruger 77/17.

Me in .17? I have a Marlin. Meh.

I love my Marlin .22 lever though.

"Enthusiasts seeking classier companionship would be better off with one (or more ) of the BVSS, BTVS and BV 93 variants."

I have personaly popped a can of Tannerite with mine
Laser like accurate + BB like recoil = Hard to match without a shooting jacket and custom Anschutz (ok thats extreme but you get it)

The Ruger trigger felt way nicer to me than the accu-trigger.

In general I hate Savage because of that trigger, but they do make a decent .17HMR in spite of it.

I have a savage 93R17, light stainless barrel. Shoots great, I find myself fighting to get the mag to lock in occasionally though. More of an annoyance than anything, otherwise I love it!

The Ruger trigger felt way nicer to me than the accu-trigger. Chances are that it was a tuned trigger in that case. Of the half dozen ruger 77/17's and the dozen or so 77/22's we've sold in the last few months, all triggers were quite poor. Way worse than accu-triggers.

I like the action better, however, the bolt lug engagement is laughable. Ruger quality control is WAY down.

Look at that bolt. The lug engagement is extremely poor. Notice those nasty file marks? That was a brand new factory ruger 77/22. They take a LOT of money in order to get them right.

You all know I'm no fan of savage. Yet their TR rimfire rifle is a great value. There are only a specific few customers I'd recommend a ruger to, and those are people with very specific situations that don't mind spending extra money on a rifle in order to get it right.

It was a stock gun as far as I know. My buddy hadn't made any modifications to it as he had just picked it up, but it was a fairly nice trigger.

Part of that is that the accu-trigger simply annoys me. As a matter of preference, I dislike it intensely.

In spite of that, for the price and purpose, I don't know that I'd look much further than the Savage.

I make no observations about the quality control of Ruger beyond that.

I have a bull barreled Savage in stainless and a CZ 452, both in .17HMR. They are both great little rifles but the CZ is more of a walk around rifle and the Savage for off the bench. Pretty sure it's me, but I have never been able to get the Savage to shoot impressively though my friend's dad has a regular model that shoots lights out.

I like the CZ rifles and the .22 and .17HMR shoot great in my experience. It seems with rimfire rifles, that it's all about the ammo.

So this got me to thinking and so I trotted by my loyal gun store today to see what was in stock in .17HMR.

They did have a Ruger 77/17 (in ugly ass synthetic stock) for about $400.

They also had a Savage 93R17 for $200. The unique thing about it was that it did NOT have the accu-trigger, just a standard regular trigger and so I got a little excited and told him to put it aside on a trade for my marlin and let me check.

Worth picking up Orkan?

I have a Marlin 917V, my buddy has a Savage 93R17.

They both shoot under an inch at a 100 yards, but the Savage has a nicer trigger.

When I was researching my purchase, I eliminated Ruger from the list because the reviews that I read showed less accuracy than the Marlin & Savage, at double the cost. The Ruger was nice looking, and it had a smooth action, but I didn't want to spend that much money.

I got my Marlin and a Mueller scope for less than the cost of the Ruger, sans scope.

I have the older model 93 without the accutrigger. This little rifle rocks!! It prefers the Hornady v-max rounds coming in at just under .5 MOA @ 110yds but the rifle shoots alot better than I do!

The only thing I don't like is the un-available bigger mags. A ten shot mag would make alot more fun!!

I "owned" a Savage .17 HMR for 3 years, and it was by far the most accurate rifle I have seen inside 100 yards. My buddy and I used to make one ragged hole all day long with it at 100 yards. No clue about the Marlin, but if was to venture into a .17 cal again it would be a Savage.
