Enlighten me on the difference between these two gas blocks. I've only saw the later with the 'closed front' I guess you would call it?

Functionally there is no difference.

The BCM has a blind hole, the other one was drilled all the way through.

The first one is BCM too, a 12.5" Kino.

I'm guessing the drilled through gas block is from an older build. BCM started putting the star on theirs a while back (not sure when).

When I personally see that star on a gb I know, if there is a problem, it most likely won't be the gb.

Ah ok, I thought that first one was a YHM.

I've used both types, and there is no difference.

Lol, is that a fact? Haha, I wasn't really talking about problems. Just trying to discern the differences (other than the obvious) in the two gas blocks. Why some are open and some closed, if one is more desirable than the other, or is just a matter a mfg process that doesn't make much difference.

The through hole is easier to manufacture correctly and allows you to tap out a stuck gas tube.

+1 to the above. Anything that makes working on a rifle easier is a gooood thing in my book.
