I'm trying to decide between laser max guide rod or crimson trace, any suggestions or experiences?

not a huge fan or lasers but crimson trace I say would be near the top of the list, especially with an M&P the grip panel fits in place of the old ones

Crimson Trace. When people like Ken Hackathorn speak about a product, I listen and follow his recommendation.

The M&P with CT grip is top left.

Wouldn't a light be more appropriate for low-light?

is there a light weight option for a light?

Streamlight makes some great pistol lights. Currently, my G17 is adorned with a TLR1, while my M&P9c sports a TLR3. Both are more than bright enough to identify a threat in any low-light condition. The -3 is lighter than the -1, but you give up lumens.

Surefire is pretty much the leader in lighting. Weapon mounted and hand held.

I've never heard of them, they must be junk.

As far as the laser is concerned, go with Crimson Trace. If it fails (which I highly doubt) then the function of the gun isn't compromised. I've never been able to verify, but I've heard horror stories of the LaserMax style lasers failing/breaking and locking up the gun rendering it useless. On the surface, this at least seems like a plausible possibility.

As for the light issue, Surefire makes excellent lights but they are pricey. I suspect my next weapon mounted light will be a Streamlight.
