View Full Version : This is what the M16 should have been, from the start

This is how I think the original M16 should have been configured, if the US military could have fully embraced the "assault rifle" concept; that is, accepting the reality that >95% of combat takes place at ranges <300m.

Plus, the configuration balances perfectly for me, and it just feels "right". Weight: 6lbs. 8oz.

Colt guy, I'm going to do an A2 upper/16" middy in 6.5 Grendel, very similar to yours.

A 16" middy in 6.5 Grendel with A2 upper that would be interesting. You will

have to post pictures.

Nah. C7A2 is what the M16 should've always been. Or... at least the M16A2.

Sweet rifle though. What length is that barrel? 16.1'' MID?

Do you have m4 feedramps on that E1 upper? What barrel are you using?

Honestly, I think the MOE handguard is very hard to beat. Love the feel of it over the stock handguards personally.

Barrel is the DD 16" CHF lightweight midlength. Upper is a C7 from Fulton Armory and has M4 feedramps.

I was considering the MOE, but this rifle was concieved as a "what if"...project. Few people the round A2 handguard goes back to at least 1968.

I had this one for awhile. Very light and handy.

I still wish I had it. I sold it to a friend for his first AR when he was 18.

I like it, simple and elegant. I want to build a retro-modern style after I build the rest on my wish list. Enjoy it.

Very Nice,

Giving my old Colt H-Bar (The screwed version with sear block and neutered bolt) a make over by swapping out the stock barrel with a FN 5.56 CL 16" Mid-Length Pencil Profile with a standard A-2 hand guard and a undecided adjustable or fixed stock.

But now that I see how nice the basic A-1 stock looks with A-2 hand guard I might just go that route.

The buttstock is a CavArms C1 and the handguard is the Cav C6.

As far as "looks", yeah, I think this is the most "balanced" look there is for ARs.

I built basically the same thing as my first AR (A1 mid 16") and loved it, then sold it to a friend as his first AR and he loves it.

I like it. Looks like a great setup for a simplistic AR.

I keep coming back to this thread. Great simple, basic, balanced build. The only thing I am going to change when I build its twin is the addition of a light. I think I am at about a 95% solution on parts either on hand or ordered. These darned things are like potato chips...you can't have just one.

The only thing I would change with that is an adjustable stock and a flat top rail. Not everyone fits that M16 stock, and we would like the option of adding optics easily

I love an a1 or a2 stock if i am not wearing armor and gotta agree about the flat top. Nice build!

Absolutely! I am a noob and a nugget, but the MOE handguards a) let you mount a VFG and a light, b) are drop in, c) are cheap, d) feel good, and e) let you keep a standard FSP. Except for free floating the barrel, they seem to give you everything most rails give you, at less cost and expense. (I guess you can't mount the IR illuminator/laser on MOE handguards.)

Very nice, KISS rifles here. I like the idea, and agree that the original M16 should have been more like these here.

Just finished my duplicate of the rifle in the original post. Ended up using a surplus M16A1 upper receiver that had been Ceracoated. Seems to work just fine, although I haven't had a chance to get it to the range yet. Kinda cold at the moment.

Glad you got it done.

Now how about some pictures?
