View Full Version : North Korean Type 88-1 (Their 5.45 AK)

Do any of these exist outside of the DPRK? I'd love to get my hands on one. Think a really expensive dinner with a demo letter-equipped SOT could result in one coming in by way of Russia or China? Has anyone on here ever attempted building a clone of one?

I like the look of the stock, with some padding that might shoot comfortably.

The commie woman with her fist raised is kinda cute.

I've always wanted a North Korean AK. Are there any in the US? Even their 7.62x39mm ones?

I know that there are a handful of 7.62x39mm North Korean AKs in the country. I'd suspect that they probably came in by way of Vietnam and were then amnesty registered. Just a guess though.

Find yourself a Chinese red bakelite folder.

I know someone who's got an NK AK in 7.62. It came in through Isreal, captured from palestinians (so goes the story) as a chopped parts kit back in the 'golden years' of kits being imported with barrels. Someone knowledgeable hand picked the rare parts kits from the lot, and offered them to collectors.

He rebuilt it on a US made milled receiver, but kept the original stubs (on both ends) because of the markings on the front, and a unique stock attachment on the back.

There are a number of NK 7.62 magazines floating around, but the markings are subtle and most people don't look that close.

Damn. If I ever find one for sale, I'm all over that shit.

I have an old Chi-com .177 pellet gun that has a red Bakelite folder on it. I wonder if it's worth anything, or if it'd be more useful as a parts donor...

I recall several years ago people converting the pellet gun stocks to fit onto real AKM's. They were (the pellet guns) under $100 at the time.

Do not want. I would assume the quality of these rifles would be on the low end of the AK spectrum. The NKs can't produce enough food for themselves, so I doubt their AK production is in good condition. I could be wrong, but other than a neat addition to an AK collection, I see now real value to NK AKs.

A couple years ago there was a transferable 7.62x39 with milled receiver. IIRC it sold for 12k

People used to say the same thing about AKs in general. I'm sure that a North Korean AK would outlast the typical shooter.

Would be an interesting AK to have for sure, especially if you could grab a set of matching PJs

Quite realistic I think. It'll probably be all they have left to issue after blowing it all on poor training and silly photo ops.

Or perhaps they are supposed scavenge mags off their fallen comrades.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of their reserve units somewhere is still equipped with Mosin-Nagants.

I don't want to underestimate the North Koreans. I'm sure they are capable of killing masses of people. In the mean time, though, they are good for entertainment.

As tense as relations are now with NK some of ours may get a chance
to inspect one closely. The NK military is an estimated 1 million,
Quantity has a quality all it's own.
We get in a punch-up with these guys it will go nuclear.

That pic looks like it came from a poorly made 80's movie. But for all we know that's the new and better tactical way of shooting. Haley Strategic and Magpul will be teaching those positions here in the coming months... ;)

I thought the quality quantity quote was Clausewitz, Google says otherwise.

Resurrecting an old thread, I know, but I never would have imagined myself sitting here about 10 miles from the DMZ when I posted this.

Interesting story: a few weeks ago, I was doing a joint exercise with the ROK Army and they brought out some "North Korean" weaponry. Their "Type 88" was in fact a Bulgarian AKS-74 (triangle folder) with the ((10)) arsenal mark on the front trunion. Very clearly Bulgarian, but they insisted that it was a North Korean Type 88. I was pretty disappointed because I would have loved to take apart a Type 88.

I looked it up for them and also showed them what a Type 88 actually looks like. They dismissed it and stuck with their story.
