There are a lot of variables involved and the question is much too broad. What is your background? What do you plan to use it for? What types of competitions? What weapon models? Will it be just for competition? Price ranges? There is far too much information for a post without narrowing it down and frankly some guys tend to have to answer the same questions over and over. Did you do a search? Check on this site as well as Lightfighter as there should be some answers.

"Simple" pistol class?

Either wear your usual carry gear - whatever it is - or ...

get a good solid belt-mounted holster, standard rise, no cant and a belt mounted two magazine holder. A flash light pouch and maybe even a dump style pouch for loose rounds.

... just my view.

As for carbine ... look at Rob S's threads on carbine class gear for decent normal human beings. Otherwise, use the gear you'd normally employ - LBV, armor, chest rig, etc.
