I've mentioned the story before but I thought everyone would like to see it. It began as the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act of 2004

Under a Republican Majority Congress this was the final version and INCLUDED a successfully amended renewal of the Clinton Assault Weapon ban.

Vote to pass a bill that would block certain civil lawsuits against manufacturers, distributors, dealers and importers of firearms and ammunition, mainly those lawsuits aimed at making them liable for gun violence. In this bill, trade groups would also be protected The bill would call for the dismissal of pending lawsuits against the gun industry. The exception would be lawsuits regarding a defect in a weapon or ammunition. It also would provide a 10-year reauthorization of the assault weapons ban which is set to expire in September 2004. The bill would increase the penalties for gun-related violent or drug trafficking crimes which have not resulted in death, to a minimum of 15 years imprisonment. The bill calls for criminal background checks on all firearm transactions at gun shows where at least 75 guns are sold. Exemptions would be made available for dealers selling guns from their homes as well as members-only gun swaps and meets carried out by nonprofit hunting clubs.

It is important to remember that regardless of the final vote, there were enough votes to get the bill this far with the above additions.

With the assault weapon ban successfully amended to his bill, Larry Craig withdrew his support for his own bill and that resulted in a new vote that essentially killed the bill.

Bill Rejected 8-90: R 3-48; D 5-41

But do NOT let those numbers fool you, there was enough support to amend the reauthorization of the Clinton Ban and if Larry Craig did NOT pull his support it likely would have passed in the above form.

I have looked for the voting record for the specific amendments but sadly cannot find it.

They vote every time there is a change. When he pulled his support he basically brought up a vote to kill the bill.

There was no motion to kill it prior to successfully amending the assault weapon ban.

There was a motion to add the renewal of the assault weapon ban and that was passed.

Only then did Larry Craig introduce a motion to kill his own bill. Without the support of the sponsor most bills are killed.
