View Full Version : Nautilus Rotating Rail

We're all worried about anti-rotation and this company comes out with something....new....:suicide:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=vb.135057639957008&type=2

I think I had a look of confusion on my face for about 15 minutes after I found this.

Didn't see any other topics on this using the orange search button...

Pincus approved...'nuff said. ;)

The video demonstrations are good for a laugh. Clearly this is marketed toward the people who are gonna bolt more shit on their rifle than they are ever gonna need. Considering that there are already off-set mounts for lights/irons/RDS and so forth, this seems like solution for a nonexistant problem.

foxtrotx1

So... I wonder how well those rail mounted optics hold zero.

Why make this? For the life of me I can not think of a good reason you would want your rail to rotate like this.

Offset rds that can be set to 45 deg to the right or left... redundant if you have an rds + magnifier combo already. Possibly worth it for an ambidexrious user clearing a shoothouse with a rifle that absolutely must have a traditional scope on it while not being free floated.

Maybe an offset vfg would be more comfortable to hold than a perfectly vertical one.

Aaaaaaand that's all that I can come up with.

If you don't sacrifice any weight or durability for the rotating rail then I don't see a problem... but yeah, it is inevitable that some people are going to do silly things with it and think they are clever.

malstew123

The rotating rail fills a niche amongst certain consumers just like the paintball trigger. However, given the potential of all mechanical devices to malfunction, I see this as a waste of money/liability. Its "cool" from a standpoint of modularity, but is best left on guns not intended to be used for self defense IMO.

Not arguing THIS point but there is a need, in other platforms, for the rotating hand guard. I put a red lion (http://www.redlionprecision.com/) hand guard on the keltec sub2000 I gave my sister and bro-in-law. I only put on a set of rail mounted irons so I don't know how precise it was in terms of MOA but for any range they'll ever encounter it returned to zero well enough to work.

It's good to keep muscle tone and build endurance, but should be kept as a separate excercise from actual sensible firearms training.

BigBoss01

Benito
03-26-13, 22:48
Daniel Defense really needs to distance themselves from this guy. I don't know how you go from Larry Vickers to this clown.
They should get a restraining order mandating he keep at least 500 yards away from any of their rifles, or even mentioning their name, lol.

As for the workout, it manages to combine completely unnecessary and repeated kneecap-smashing with kettlebell flipping jack-assery, two things that every workout could do without. If you're going to start mixing exercise with shooting for "realism", maybe do some running since if it should ever, ever come down to using your firearm in serious no-bullshit encounter, 99.9% chance you're gonna be running and not doing knee-switches, flipping ****ing kettlebells or doing mother****ing situps upside-down.
Holy ****.

Honestly, that rail looks like a decent concept, given a couple factors of moderation. It replaces the existing rail, so it (hopefully) wouldn't add too much extra weight. The examples in some of those videos can be valid solutions for people in specific circumstances.

Granted, it's a niche that is largely unneeded or can be addressed by other means, but it doesn't look like a bad idea.

Now, if it's considerably heavier than a standard rail, that's probably a big enough counter to the people who would actually need such a solution. And if it doesn't lock reliably or solid, it's more of a liability.

Beyond those two potential points, the only BAD thing about the product seems to be the abuse it will receive from mall ninjas tacking on as many accessories as possible. And perhaps the fact that it's being promoted by someone you don't like.

What little I know of R.P. I watched on the "Outdoor Channel" and he seemed credible.

I witnessed no ludicrous or dangerous exercises as part of a shooting regimen.

Until now...

Anyone have a clue as to why the guy seems to have gone off the rails...?

Abraham
09-15-13, 11:04
Whoops, I didn't realize I'd made a very bad pun with my last post - not intentional.

So, I'll restate: Anyone have an idea of why he appeared credible (at least for awhile) and then wandered off the path of credibility?

I'll feel kinda bad for the guy as he was someone I thought knew his stuff.

JSantoro
09-15-13, 11:17
No, he's been a vat of used douche for pretty much the entire time.

He seemed and appeared credible, and continues to do so because most American gun owners think of John Woo films as firearms training.

Abraham
09-15-13, 11:25
Say it isn't so, John Woo ISN'T a major leader of firearms training?

Who Knew?

Thanks for the heads up JSantoro - I'll be watching for R.P.'s T.V. stuff with a lot more critical eye...perhaps there's a huge vein of unintentional comedy there to be mined...(if in fact he's still on T.V.?)

This Prepping stuff is getting a lot of attention & for good reason given the fallout of Katrina, the Joplin tornado, and Sandy. I live in a seismic zone, so I can see the value in preparing for a disaster. Yeah I really agree with the last point you made. Us serious shooters blew off the whole "Zombie" deal that's been going on for a few years, but it's been a cash cow for the industry and brought in a ton of new shooters. Some good, some bad.

There is a ton of chest thumping self proclaimed badasses on this site, and yeah Pincus is a bit of a douche in how he carries himself, but he sells his product and is great at teaching new shooters. I do not discredit DD for using him to represent their product, it does not change the quality or the integrity of their outstanding company.

The show "Doomsday Preppers" is extremely popular and it is helping to mainstream Prepping, and the learning and teaching of survival skills, which is a very good thing. I was fortunate enough to grow up camping and hunting and fishing in Montana so I have sound fundamental survival skills, but there are millions of people (especially in cities) that do not.

As for this rail, it seems to me it is completely unnecessary and nowhere near the quality and performance of LaRue, DD or any other respected manufacturer. One of my local gun stores had a flyer on it awhile back. I asked them a little bit about it, and the guy was heralding it as the 2nd coming. I just laughed and have taken my business elsewhere.
