Just purchased a RIS II for my build. Shipping tomorrow

How much time does it require? Anyone know of a resource for instillation procedures? I have a fairly large number of tools in our machine shop (vice, punch sets, torque wrenches, etc.) and made sure to order their bolt up barrel nut wrench...

However, if those with experience think I'm better off paying a gunsmith to do it, just say so. :moil:

OP, its a easy job but which wrench did you get? There is the cheap silver wrench and then their is the armorers wrench that is of the same design. Definitely opt for the armorer wrench as the other one is junk.

I use a DD Lite Rail and RIS II on two different carbines. If you have the right tools, you should be done in 15 mins or less. The longest part of the install is screwing the six screw that mount the rail to the bolt up plate.

Having an Brownells' AR15 vice block will help speed up the process, but not needed.

Here's a youtube video of the process. He's installing a lite rail, which is one piece. With the RIS II you'll simply have to screw in the second lower piece as the instructions state.

Yea that is the less than stellar one. It will probably work a few times but it will eventually deform to the point of uselessness. Call D&D back and tell them you want one their armorer wrenches if they have any in stock, they are 20-25$ IIRC.

Out of curiosity have installed one onto a carbine that was already assembled? If so, I would like to know your secret because it usually takes about that long to remove the FSB and barrel nut.

No secret, the lite rail was installed on a rifle I built piece by piece as funds were available. I had the FSB installed through ADCO. I do recall prior to having a front sight bench block, it was a hassle to take the FSB off.

The RIS II was also installed on a rifle I built piece by piece as funds became available, except this time I got a barrel with a lower profile gas block.

Why did I spend an extra $15 on this little wrench when it already came in the box?

damn you online descriptions which don't include a parts list...

Oh well. Gonna start on this after work.

Same happened to me...Tough I lucked out cause the OmegaX came with a different barrel nut wrench than I expected, now I have the extra one for my LITE rail.

For me, your particular rail may be different, installing both LITE Rail and Omega X took a while only because the allen screws only let you have quarter turns.

Strange... I'm pretty sure I bought my DD little silver on Amazon. don't remember them coming with the wrench in the past.

The cheapo has worked fine for me for several installs.

My "lite rail" didn't come with a wrench, but the "RIS II" did. Always nice to have an extra.

Neckropost.

Is it possible to install this with a pinned flash hider? Unsure I if the FSB needs to be completely removed or just slide down the barrel.

Daniel Defense uses a proprietary locking/barrel nut system. I'm gonna say the the barrel nut may clear the flash hider, but will not clear the FSB. I did a quick YouTube search and you can see the installation here:

To get a better idea I would look at some YouTube install videos. I found this video of a Lite Rail installation, however the Lite Rail is wider than the RIS II. I have two rifles, one with the Lite Rail and one with the RIS II, both use the same barrel nut and locking system.

I've installed a few DD handguards with the wrench they provided without any problems. It is a very close tolerance so holding the wrench with one hand and the torque wrench with the other to keep things from moving. I didn't have the DD wrench once and used a bcm kmr wrench. The biggest thing is making sure the wrench stays completely straight. Sometimes it is hard to get it straight because of the tight fit. You might have to tap it with something to get all the tabs in the barrel nut.

I was hoping you would chime in. It's the mount up plate in the rear. I guess ADCO will have to do it.

Also the barrel nut and the handguard itself has a ring that will not fit over the FSB.

Thanks guys. Will ADCO be able to install and then pin the muzzle device?

What do you have as a rail now, and what are you going to? Just curious..

Hey,

I'm going to make a FSB clone out of my Colt Socom 14.5". Flash hider is currently pinned, but having ADCO cut it, and put on a new one. I'll have them install the Ris while it's there.

I just had Markm toss one on a 16' Colt 69?? 70 I think) Skinny barrel Colt. It is the gold standard in rails. I dig it. Congrats on a nice choice.

I love those DD rails. I wish the mk 18 fsp was still made.
