Possible Changes to SAFE Act To Keep Film Industry Strong in New York

Leaders in Albany are re-visiting some of the provisions of the New York State Safe Act, the legislation that was swiftly passed in the wake of the Newtown tragedy.Under the law, movies and television shows produced in the state are unable to film with banned assault weapons.

Now, politicians are taking a second look because of potential economic impact. The movie business brings in big bucks for New York State, over $12 billion since a tax incentive program began 8 years ago.

One local filmmaker said not amending the New York State Safe Act to allow banned weapons on film could mean producers would roll out the red carpet somewhere else.

"People are just going to go elsewhere," said Bill Cowell, Founder of Buffalo Niagara Film Festival. "It's really simple. Hollywood isn't looking to go out of their way to do things here. We have to make things presentable to do things here."

Some against an exemption for banned weapons in film argue an amendment would send mixed messages to children.

Governor Cuomo is in support of amending the law so that the film industry in the state thrives. A vote is expected sometime in the near future.
