This is a long, but very good read. Quite apropos to the current discussions about gun control.

A few interesting points:
- 1928 law had much discussion about the imminent need to do "something"
- Banning "military style rifles" was a frequent topic of discussion. Keep in mind at the time these were bolt action Mausers with high capacity (for the time) fixed 5-round magazines
- registration led to confiscation
- Gun prohibitionists used current events to their advantage to push for more control/restriction.

There is this story on the interwebs that Hitler didn't restrict gun access, he increased it. What he actually did was make it easier for his NS party people to get guns while making it illegal for 'undesirables' (this meant Jews) to have guns. This article clearly states the truth.
