This is umpossible. Remember the first 2nd Amendment case US vs Miller, the judge ruled that we had a right to military weapons but a shotgun is not a military weapon so therefore it had no 2nd Amendment protection. Clearly it was incorrectly decided.

But it is interesting that this case was seen as purely anti-gun when it could have been used (perhaps during the recent Supreme Court case) to show that we have a right to the same small arms as the military (such as M4s).

I know quite a bit about the M26 MESS, I mean modular accessory shotgun system, to much in fact. My BCT used the the precursure system the LSS, Lightweight Shotgun System, in OEF 2003-04 along side Mossberg 500's. The MASS is a more mature version of the LSS which addressed some of the faults of the LSS. That said the main fault of the system is the requirement. The pictures above do a preety good job of showing the main one human factors.

The MASS still has not been fielded, despite having been in development since as best I can determine around 1999. It did beat out the only other submission, which was a version of the 870 MCS. At least one major command has opted out of the MASS and gone with a differant product(pictured in my last post) and the overall requirement has been severly reduced for other reasons.

Not alot more I can add in a open forum.

It's a version of the Mossberg shotgun. As configured it is a "Compact" with a 16" breaching heavy wall barrel, rail forend, reciever rail and a collapsible stock. They are in wide use by certain portions of the Army which recieved authorization for them, and are derived intialy from configuration requirements I developed back in 2001 as a Infantry PSG/1SG while assigned to the 10th MTN.

Mod 1 is still pending, if the patents ever get straight.

Great pictures, especially the older ones from WWII and Viet Nam.

I have a buddy of mine's (now passed on), Bronze Star and citation from 1963, where he used a model 12 to good effect, while leading a small group of VNMC in a counter attack, after an ambush by a superior force. (Reading the citation, I think he would have gotten the NC or a SS later in the war).

Wasn't the first or last time he used it in combat. He had acquired the model 12 after realizing his M14 wasn't working out well for the job he was doing. His parents had to mail him the buckshot for it, as he couldn't get it where he was at.

Thanks for answering Cagemonkey. I am still curious about why the front of the barrel is like the way it is, it doesn't appear to be a choke or muzzle device of some kind. On closer look, it appears it is the same shotgun in the same configuration pictured two up.

It's the bayonet mount that was made for the 870's a million years ago. They are collectors items now if you can find one. I'll see if I can find a referance picture which is clearer.

Dustin,

If I remember correctly (those pics where taken in 03') they were 12.5". I've got a 10" with my Rem 870 MCS and slide assembly is shorter. (currently running a 14", fixed stock and 2 rd extension for 3+2+1). Since those were standard slide assemblies it should be a 12.5".

From some training Tom Given and I did for the USMC High Risk Personnel Training Cadre:

http://rangemaster.com/img_mil_hrp_shotgun.jpg

I went through HRP back in 1994. One of the best weeks ever on the range! When we worked on transition drills from the shotgun to pistol without the nijafied slings and they said drop the shotgun, we all instinctively bent over and gently put it on the ground. Then we did drills consisting of firing a round and then just letting go and letting it drop.

Who makes this forearm? i like its compactness.

Its more compact because its for a NFA Mossberg Compact. We went with them because they are slimmer than the compeable Surefire units.

I have a few dozen still on hand.

Interesting opinion on M26 MASS by Gearscout (link (http://militarytimes.com/blogs/gearscout/2012/02/17/m26-mass-shotgun-issued-to-members-of-101st-airborne-infantry-division/)):

I can’t wait to hear how it’s received by Joe. Sure, it’s great to always have a shotgun at the ready. But, I wonder how long it will take for guys to start bitching about always lugging a shotgun on the front of their weapon. There’s a big difference between 4lbs on the front of an M4 vs. 7lbs of a Remington 870 on their back. Like the adoption of any new piece of gear, it’s going to be a training issue as much for leaders as grunts. Commanders are going to have to learn to deploy these weapons appropriately or risk guys “forgetting” them when they step. I suspect the compact M26 will see more duty as a standalone weapon than it will attached to carbines.

What do you think?

No pictures of these in actual use have surfaced yet, but thought I would share these photos Stickman has done.

Nice Stick,

Your shotgun is a killer! Also, just wanted to let you know that you have the best photo skill in any firearms forum. I thank you for the quality of your images. Do you mind letting us know what light and which focal plane you use for this shot?

Please advice,
G. Photo fan of yours

I really do not like the C stock.

In my opinion it just looks weird.

I like the Mesa tactical a lot more

But...God bless our troops. No doubt there.

There was a pic floating around the 'net of a USAF SP sporting a 1897 Riot taken during Desert Shield/Desert Storm timeframe. I'd thought all these were long gone out of the inventory but damned if he didn't have one.

That looks awesome. I just recently got a Winchester 129 Ranger and have been tempted to do my version of a trench gun with it

$1200 MSRP and no slamfire. I'll pass.I don’t care for anything from the new inland. Their M1 carbines are supposed to be of dubious quality from rifle to rifle, and I despise the fact the “WWII replica” 1911 has a firing pin block and randomly colored parts made of different metals.
