I've been handloading for a couple of years now, and I always had every intention of building or buying a precision upper.
So, here it is...
As it turned out, a majority of the rifle is from Wisconsin companies.

Note:
All parts were sourced pre-panic...

I happened upon a BCM SS410 barrel of the 16" mid-length flavor locally for a decent price.
This really started the ball rolling.
I knew from the get go that my build would HAVE to have a BCM SS410 barrel.
These barrels are made my one of the best barrel makers out there, and have a great reputation for their accuracy.

I was able to source a Vltor MUR upper, and BCM gas block from this board.
The MUR lacks the forward assist, but this is strictly a range toy.
I wanted the MUR for it's exact machining tolerances.
I figured if the receiver face was perfectly perpendicular to the barrel's bore, all the better.
Follow me?

I had an extra BCM BCG and A2 flash hider already.

I decided to get a Vortex PST 1-4X mounted on a ADM scout mount.

I saw the FDE mount on Barfcom, so I scooped it up.
My brother bought a H-1 in an ADM mount from DSGarms, and I was impressed with it.

I choose the PST over the Trijicon TR-24, (which was really the only other optic I was considering.), because of the reticle.
Speaking to a couple of guys who attended the John McPhee class in my area last year, they highly recommended a MRAD reticle with hashmarks for holdovers.
The glass is clear and bright.

Lastly, I added a Troy 15" Alpha in FDE.
I wanted to get the bi-pod out front as much as possible.

The lower, in case anyone is wondering, is a BCM blem with a Geissele SSA installed.

Now, I have never really shot for precision groups before.
And I have only been shooting since I've been a member on this board, so I am still pretty green.
I figured I was a 4MOA shooter at best.

I bought a box of Hornady 75gr BTHP bullet and a box of their 75gr BTHP factory ammo to compare with.
I zeroed the irons at 100yrds with some PPU M193.
The optics are zeroed with the same.

These pics are from my target from this very cold WI range trip.
(If I remember correctly, it was 14* that day)
The orange dots are 1".

The center group is with the M193 using my irons.
The Hornady factory are in the upper left.
The upper right are some 40gr Nosler orange tipped varmit projos I got for cheap. (I just wanted to see if the 1:8" twist would stabilize them.)

Best group.
21.6gr of H335, CCI #400 SRP, mixed brass.

Honestly guys, I never knew I could shoot like this.
I can't wait to play with different handload recipes and stretch it out past 300yrds. (My home rnge goes out to 600yrds)

Very cool. I'm actually in the middle of two "made in Wisconsin" builds myself right now, one of which is an 18" BCM SPR. I may be picking your brain on occasion if you don't mind. I also might be in your neck of the woods next weekend trying to source some parts & reloading components.

I can hit the range Sunday if you're around.
Good luck on finding those components.

Looks great!

I've been waiting to get my hands on one of those SS410 barrels in 18" flavor for a while, but have just had too much other stuff going on. Now with the panic, I don't know if Ill be able to do it within the next year. In the mean time, I've been enjoying one of Monty's CHF barrels.

That's the plan.
Got your recipe bookmarked.
;)

If I could even find the damn things!

Excellent write up poly and great build.

That ADM mount. Is it the Noveske version? I've been trying to find one but can't. Noveske's site has been out of them for a while. I don't think it's a normally stocked item which is one reason it is so hard to locate.

I have no idea about the mount.
Picked it up on Barf.

I'd like to see a M68 mount in the color though.

Nice build :)

Your target selection, and markings are confusing, however I tried my best to interpret the results, and then properly measure them up for you in order for future reference use.

Real men shoot 10rd groups fwiw :p

I shot 5 round groups because I only loaded 50 rounds working up from 21.2gr, I believe.
I wanted to see the results compared to the factory loading.

I shot a group of 5 and went to the target to mark them as to not be confused with another group.
(There was a lot of trudging through snow that day!)

I'm satisfied with the 21.6gr loading.
It gave me good results.

My target selection is just what I had on hand at the time.
Besides, it was my 1st time shooting groups.

Nifty program you got there.
I want one.

I'm certainly not trying to bust balls if that's how I came across.

The precision calculator is free to anyone whom wants to use it....

On Target v1.10 precision calculator...(free) (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=89378)

Not at all.
I have no idea what I'm doing with this precision stuff.
Hell, I was surprised I did as well as I did!

I wish I could have taken the McPhee course, but I didn't have the funds to drop on 2 classes for the year.

BTW, are there any good places for me to lurk and learn?
Obviously the precision, semi-auto subforum would be one.

Thanks!
Good read.

I didn't know they allowed so much good info to be crammed into one post over there.

Surely he violated some code of conduct!

Very nice build. It will be interesting to see the results out at 300 yards once you have a reload "recipe" dialed in for that rifle.

What makes you think I can hit anything at 300yrds?!

I thought I would update this thread.

I believe I have about 200 rounds through this upper.
All hand loads.
All shot from a bench.

I took it out today to try out MarkM's pet load. (Where you been dude?)
It shot so well I zeroed my optics to it.

That's a 10 round group @ 100 yards from a bench.
77gr. SMK/H322/Wolf SMR

I definitely have to get more of those SMK's!

Here's 10 rounds of 64gr Nosler BSB @ 50 yards.

Thank you for the update. I read a lot more than I post, & it's much appreciated when the original poster follows up from the original post.

Good shooting by the way.

I am curious if this setup "walks" as the barrel heats up? How quickly were you firing the ten shot groups?

polymorpheous
09-12-13, 22:57
I wasn't rushing it.
I'd let the barrel cool between groups.

I have one of these barrels and was very happy with how it stacked Fed GMM 68 gr at 100 yards with a 4x Vortex. I am not a group shooter either, but three consecutive three shot groups, two by me and one by my brother, all with same POI, and all groups thumbnail size. Not one 10 shot group, I know, but still 9 straight rounds under an inch. Shoots at least as well as my Noveske Afghan in a VIS and makes for a great coyote blaster.

I have a MUR on another build, which is a great shooter. Maybe I should pair them up, or maybe just leave well enough alone.
