I want to do a non-scientific study and see if a person had $2000 to spend on a AR15/M4 style rifle, which components would most choose?

Please post what you would build or buy with $2K pre sandy hook. Leave out optics, ammo, mags, and training. I just want to focus on the rifle itself.

Thanks.

Edit: This includes factory and custom builds.

I spent $2k on my rifle before I read at length on this site. If I had to do it all over again...one of the tan SR-15e3's add a BCM ambi charging handle and grip...done sir, done.

I think there is a thread or two here on dream builds..if you wanted to see what we would do immediately after winning the lottery....:D

You see $2000 ARs on Gunbroker all the time. Here's just one example:

I guess if it was rare enough, I would consider it.

I'd have to think about it a little but either a Noveske or a KAC SR-15

Would this $2k include furniture/rail?

If it included rails and all in that price I would probably stick with DD or Noveske or BCM w/DD rail. Is it rifle and rifle only or are you including QD attachments, Vertical Grips/ AFG, lights, slings, stocks, lasers, etc?

This could be complete rifles or builds from parts.

What accessories?

You said it doesn't include optics, but optics are an accessory in my vocabulary

Optics
Slings
Rails
Furniture
Lights
Triggers

What counts towards the budget?

I thought you said you were interested in the rifle only?

I guess I'd just get my Colt LE6920, exactly as it sits. I'd buy it somewhere with a better price to save some on the rifle itself, count the sale of some of the stock parts that I wouldn't need after replacing them, and be right at $2k not counting the scope/mount

Colt LE6920: ~$1,180
Trijicon Accupoint TR24G: $760
LaRue SPR-E LT-139: $230
LaRue Cattail for TR24: $80
Troy Rear Folding Battlesight: $90
Surefire X300 Ultra: $215
BattleComp 2400 FSB light mount: $80
Geissle SSA trigger: $200
Magpul MOE+ grip and trigger guard: $30
Centurion C4 carbine cutout rail: $275
Magpul stubby VFG: $20
LaRue index clips: $30
Magpul ACS-L stock: $95
Vickers Combat Application Sling (VCAS), padded, Coyote, Al: $75
Daniel Defense QD endplate: $50
BCM/Vltor gunfighter CH Mod 4: $35

Ok lets say you have $2K toward the rifle of your choice, you can either purchase a factory rifle and if budget allows upgrade it, or you can start from scratch. Lets also say optics, ammo, mags, and training are free so dont include them in your budget.

Example A: I would buy a brand X rifle and add this trigger, sights, grip, stock, etc.

Example B: I would start with this lower, this lpk, this upper, barrel, rail, etc.

Korgs130 got it right.

I'm pretty sure you missed the point...
I'm making my own point, and that is I have never spent $2000 on a rifle minus the accessories. However, people will spend that and more if it's a collectible item, and for some, price is no option. For me personally, I have never found a rifle in basic form plus upgrades that gets to the $2000 level. With accessories (optics, etc.) I have certainly spent more than that.

steyrman13
04-14-13, 22:48
If your not considering optics/lasers/lights. I would say a colt socom II/ DD m4v7 or v1 or DD mk18 or the BCM 11.5SBR with a DD lite FSB rail and a BCM CH mod 4, BFG VCAS Sling w/ QD sewn in , LMT Sopmod or VLTOR IMOD Clubfoot stock, Tabgo down stubby QD, BCMod 1 grip or magpul Miad, kac BUIS, surefire MB

tog
04-14-13, 23:08
I would also get a couple of 6920's as someone has already mentioned. (To bad he said ar15 type rifles. I would spend the money on a FAL otherwise).

justin_247
04-14-13, 23:12
If I had $2000 to spend on one general purpose rifle right now, I'd get the following:

- Colt M4A1 SOCOM I or II rifle
- Aimpoint PRO optic
- BFG Vickers sling
- Surefire light
- 10 Magpul PMAGs

That should be fine for the vast, vast majority of the applications you'd need an AR for.

My Larue PredatAR with irons, Battlecomp, surefire light and a few upgrades came in under 2K. My Jack Carbine was around 2K. My pieced together BCM is just under 2K with a 2 stage Geissele, Daniel Defense rail and surefire brake.

It's tough to piece together a decent quality AR, with a nice rail and Geissele trigger for under 2K.

Since many are ignoring the original parameters of pre-SH, I'll just add my 2 cents that with the current situation it's generally too painful to spend double to triple for a matching glamour lower when a built Gator functions just as well and leaves ~ $300-600 in the build budget.

I couldn't bear to divorce the M4 Socom II and paid up, but for the rest, I will indulge in factory lowers for some only when/if they get back close to pre-panic prices and mainly for re-sale potential.

For the OP's time travel fantasy: I'm scarfing up an SR-15 as never will I cough up the cash in today's bucks for a complete rig.

As others have said, BCM build or Noveske complete. My choice would be a Noveske OR do a billet build of some type, spikes/ seekins/ Mega Arms AMBI billet upper/lower build with some type of chf barrel, a Geisselle trigger, WMD BCG, UBR stock etc...
Just check out the Mega/ Spikes/ and Seekins billet uppers/ lowers

Ordered my Colt from Grant last year around this time for right at $1200 with a BC 1.0, B5 Sopmod, and Magpul ASAP plate already installed. If your willing to buy your parts used besides none fire control items like triggers etc, then its fairly easy to build a nice rifle for the $2000 price.

(Going off of Pre-December prices).

Colt 6920 with B5 Sopmod/BC 1.0/Magpul ASAP plate (new) = $1200

Chopped Carry Handle = LMT (used) $50 or Chopped Colt Handle $0

Aimpoint Comp M2 (used) $300 (Add $100 for a Pro)

Inforce WML light (new) $100

Centurion or Daniel Defense FSP rail $250-$300 (new or used)

Sling of your choice $50

ALG ACT Trigger $60

BCM Gunfighter Charging handle $40

Sell your stock trigger, hand guards and carry handle (if you went with a different one) and buy rail covers, hand stops, and grip as you see fit.

Right at $2000 ($2230 at most if you don't sell the factory items and want a different grip).

I'm with ya, even if I get a colt LE6920 its going to be over $2500 when I'm done with it and that doesn't include optics. Hell I got a KAC Sr-25 ECC with the 1-8x CQBSS and trigger work with a Harris bipod and a LDI DBAL D2 and a JAC suppressor. It's 11k for one rifle.

I think the question more had to do with what would be take or leave off if they had a 2k budget. When its that small you think about your options alot more: "do I really need a sopmod stock MORE that a SSA trigger?"

I'd go with the same setup I have now. My wife bought me a Colt MT6400 Carbine (post-ban compliant version of the LE6920 required here in New Yorkistan) for Christmas and my birthday. I've added quite a bit to it in the four months I've had it.

Colt MT6400- $1200.
Aimpoint PRO $400.
Magpul ACS stock- $110.
BCM buffer tube- $30
Magpul MOE handguard- $35
IWC QD Micro Flush QD Sling Mount- $16
Magpul MIAD grip- $35
Magpul Trigger Guard- $9
IWC SMC 1" Light Mount with a G2X Tactical Light- $120
Troy OEM M4 Battle Sling Mount- $45
So far I/we have $2000 into my setup.

There are a few other things I'm going to get.

Probably the same rifle I completed 6 months pre sandy hook. It's my favorite jack of all trades rig.

nib-x flat top upper
spikes nib-x bcg
bcm mod-3 charging handle
DD LW 16" barrel
DD lite rail
PRI gas block/flip sight

spikes lower
ambi selector
RRA 2 stage trigger
magpul ctr, miad and rear flip sight

I bought a few uppers and lowers at the same time as well as two barrels. I picked the parts that fit the best and sold the extra stuff to my friends. Wish I could of held onto that stuff till after sandy hook but I needed money at the time :/

I have many $2000+ rifles. If I were limited and wanted to build a quality weapon:

Mega forged lower: $150
PSA LPK - FCG: $30
Geissele G2s: $160
Noveske STS-60: $40
Magpul MOE+ Grip: $23
Magpul MOE trigger guard : $9
B5 Bravo: $58
BCM RE: $36
Castle Nut: $5
Fortis QD End plate: $23
Spring and H-Buffer: $18
DDM4V7 upper: $900
Eotech XPS 2-0: $427
Inforce WML: $110
KZ simple single point sling: $10
----------------------------------
TOTAL: $1999

Then I would be sad because I forgot BUIS. So $90 for MBUS II..

Off the shelf I'd snag a Jack Carbine or Noveske SBR.

Build would be a billet Mega receiver set, Noveske 11.5 SS, Geissele or NSR rail, Magpul plastics and MBUS. BCM/Colt guts and Geissele trigger group. Surefire light setup and AAC can mount. This would all be less the 200 for stamp.

A KAC SR15...and it will still leave you with a few hundred to put toward ammo or optics.
The rifle feels very light and well balance compared to my Colts. Many people say it shoots soft but personally I am not so attuned that I notice a difference between it, Colt, LMT or even a DPMS. I am recoil dumb I guess. Fit/finish is top quality. Has the two stage trigger which is nice (I have a Geissele SSA-E but don't have it installed so can't compare).
With the exception of a bolt catch on the port side, it is fully ambi. Has a nice rail with BUIS installed.
A lot of rifle for what I paid...

pre craziness, AR15, no optics? I wouldn't spend $2k on 1 so I guess the 2 Colts like others posted.

However, since I think of the optics as a part of the rifle, this is one I have $2k in now:

Spikes complete rifle (fde upper/lower)
18" LW50 mid 1:8
PWS FSC556
Spikes BAR (it's not bad on a rifle you're not trying to keep light/slim)
Assorted rail covers (mostly ladder with TD on bottom)
Troy front and rear BUIS
Spikes NiB bcg
PRI ch
VTAC sling
LT104 with SWFA SS1-6x24
SSA-E

The last 2 items are half the price. I'll post a pic when I put the SS1-6 on (finally here after 11 months) and go to the range or ranch.

I did spend $2000 on an AR, the BCM EAG. Only factory 14.5" mid at the time (2010). I still like it (after I put the SOPMOD and T-1 on it), but since I now have a "basic" AR, I'd be smoking crack if it wasn't either a custom build, or an SR-15E3. Plus to be frank it's outdated in terms of rail system.

Custom build would look like:
Noveske gen 2, Lancer, or KAC lower
Either 10.5 or 14.5 middy
SOPMOD, but I would probably give the Bravo a shot.
NSR or whatever will be the greatest keymod rail in the near future
SF Fury, until SF produces a 1000 lumen light. Mount is irrelevant.

Everything else I'm open to, besides optic (T-1).

My "ideal" AR would be Grant's set up (for those of you who have used it). But that probably costs a little more than $2000.
