I started a quest to get what I thought was a perfect pig gun. Ended up with a 308 in an AR platform. I took it for its first pig hunt and I couldn't have been happier. A single shot at about 150 yards put it down immediatly. I used Hornady 165 BTSP.

Congrats!

Do you think a 300 blackout would have the same results? I think that's going to be my next build.

I have zero expirence with the 300 blackout. 308 won out for me since ammo was easiest to find. I looked at 6.8, 450 bushmaster, 50 Beauwulf. Avalibilty of ammo won it for me. I couldn't be happier with how the 308 performed.

I plan on my son using it for the next pig and his first deer this deer season.

Nice porker! Where in the midwest did you harvest it?

Nice pic! congrats
300 blk out is best used suppressed thats what it was designed for I believe. Out to 300yds.
308 can reach out double that and knock sumthn down. I may be wrong but they are way differnt calibers.
Myself 308 is a great pig round. Just my humble opinion

You are right, they are WAY different calibers.

Nice shot placement, 7.62mm works great, I am using 130 grain Barnes TSX handloads in mine and there is terrific penetration and devastating wound channel.

A benefit of 300 Blackout is that it works well suppressed. Supersonic ammo allows you to get close to AK47 ballistics from a 9" Blackout barrel. Also, a short Blackout is on par or outperforms longer 5.56 rifles while not suffering the blast and recoil of 6.8 or 308.

A 9" 300 Blackout with 110gr TSX gives you incredible terminal ballistics at ranges in excess of 300 yards. The trajectory is what is different as it drops considerably more than 5.56. But, the drop at 300 isn't that much more than a similar length barrel would give you in 6.8.

I've killed a ton of hogs (in normal people standards, not SkyPup standards) and within 250 yards (my average shot is within 40 to 50 yards usually less and a max is usually barely more than 125) I've never noticed much difference between 6.8, 5.56 and even 308 when I place my shot correctly. I've taken a number of hogs in excess of 225 pounds, but none of the SkyPup monsters.

308 is a great round and I really need a PredatOBR to replace the SCAR H I sold, but I've never lost a hog due to using 5.56. My main reason for picking up the 300 Blackout I have now was to get a very small package with the 9" barrel, but get similar or even better ballistics than my 14.5" with 70gr TSX out to 200 yards with ammo like the Black Tip TSX.

Suppression is just a nice bonus.

Congrats!

Yes, within 200 yards I don't think you'd see a real difference with the right ammo. I've never had any issues with 5.56 as long as I used quality ammo and made good hits. The biggest problem is people think the vitals are in a similar place as a deer when they're actually farther forward.

If maneuverability and ease of carry was no concern, I'd go with the 308 every time. But, I hunt from vehicles or in thick brush, so a small gun is a benefit.

Nice pig, by the way!

Looks like a great job on both counts: nice pig and nice boom stick.

Congrats.
