I came across this video clip on another forum and thought I'd share it here. The subject is the shattering of Prince Rupert's Drops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Rupert's_Drop) filmed with an ultra-high speed camera. Prince Rupert's Drops are formed by dropping molten glass into cold water, which forms glass threads with unique physical properties (a combination of very high compressive stress on the surface with very high tensile stress in the interior). Pretty interesting stuff: http://boingboing.net/2013/04/04/slomo-shattering-of-prince-rup.html

After watching the clip above, I noticed another link to a clip where they were filming (again with a high speed camera) guys shooting doughnuts. The interesting portion is at the very end, when the guy shoots a doughnut with a Walther P22. There's a fly in the frame and the slow-motion video shows how the fly compensates in flight to the shock wave generated by the muzzle blast from the pistol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=QH091zFHdQ0

I was curious how those who fly helicopters would compare their reaction and recovery times to those of that fly. :)

The "Smarter Every Day" guy has a bunch of interesting clips on YouTube. Another one which might interest helicopter fans examines the physics of helicopter flight speed limits while filming some pretty spectacular film clips of "light painting" using an illuminated RC helicopter flying at night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pbdwueqGp4&list=PLBCFA347CE84FD2A9&index=3

I'm sure other members have come across all manner of fascinating science-related clips and websites. Post 'em up and wow the rest of us with some amazing science and technology.

I hope this thread gets more replies. This kind of stuff is right up my alley. I'm such a nerd!
