Hey whats up everyone? I am getting more and more into firearms, and I have been wanting to purchase my first AR. I have rifle, shotgun, and pistol experience but I have never handled or shot an AR. It seems sort of confusing to me all the different arrangements and parts available for AR's! Anyway, I know now is a horrible time to buy... but I have a couple connections luckily that have very large selections to sell... and I want in. I would like something that is sort of mid range... not the least expensive, but nothing too crazy... Something that is very reliable and durable... Has maybe an M4 profiled barrel, a free floating barrel system, chrome lined high quality steel barrel, etc. I guess basically with some nice mil spec...I am looking to spend from $800-$1400... Does anyone have any suggestions for me in my situation?

You're going to get this answer more than a few times... but I would recommend picking up a Colt 6920 and learning the system before worrying too much about accessories, parts, barrel profiles, etc.
What I've come to learn is that there is a lot of GOOD stuff out there.. but finding the RIGHT stuff (for you) can only be achieved through experience.
Build up the software, make hardware changes later.
Welcome to the forum!
a COLT 6920 is the best and simplest carbine, that can do you want you want, without having the free float barrel, however.
I have no experience with one though :O Though I know for a fact that they are quality.
welcome aboard friend!
buy the best plain vanilla you can afford - shoot the heck out of it - then start thinking about all those tasty extras - research all those at your leisure and you won't waste money by buying twice or things you don't need
I suggest you spend some time reading and understand the terminology and what is what. I don't recommend that you buy anything and start putting Gucci on it until you understand the ins and outs.

Where did you buy your M203 grenade launcher? Do you have many 40mm projectiles for it? Are they just dummy rounds, or did you pony up the $200 each stamp for live rounds?

What are you talking about? I have several Govt profiled 14.5 M4 barrels and don't have a 203.
Am I breaking an internut rule or some such?

Well, if you're breaking an internut rule about gov profile barrels, I hate to find out what rule I'm breaking using the RIS II rails I've got.

That's the ARFcom guide to poser excellence. Along with maintaining a minimum 285 lb body weight, and wearing flip flops when bump firing... I could never make the cut. :(.

While flip-flops are acceptable for summer bump-firing duty, Ugg Boots are required for all winter assignments.

Get a basic carbine, look into going to a carbine class & joining one of the local training groups (we have a couple of sub-forums covering those subjects), shoot it, then shoot it some more. Don't spend money on a free float tube or any other accessory until you have enough experience to know what you want. (Just so you know, a free float tube isn't milspec.)
An M4 profile barrel works, but isn't necessary nor is it the best choice. It's a personal choice but some barrel profiles are more practical than others. A carbine configured something like this is a great place to start. It's how mine was set up when I first got it

After some shooting and research, this is how it's currently configured-

It has the MOE handguard and I haven't found a need or want for a handguard with lots or rail estate and so far, it works fine without adding a free float tube. I might add one later, but that will because I want one, not because I need one.
Not much difference between the two. I didn't spend much money replacing parts I didn't like. I did replace the GI trigger with a Geiselle SSA but the GI trigger didn't cost me much and I was able to wait until I found the SSA on sale.
Welcome to the forums
Some good advice has already been given since Colt makes good rifles. But I'll add some more advice.
I'm pretty partial to rifles by Daniel Defense but Bravo Company makes good rifles as well. You're likely to get a good one with LMT and Noveske too. Just stay away from Bushy, Stag, DPMS and similar companies.

I was recently in your shoes and went with a Colt 6920 (I had a lesser AR but traded up in the craziness). I've been through my 1st Carbine class with it and numerous trips to the range and it's been flawless. The 6920 should be in your price range and you might have some left over for ammo/training (always good)!
I know you have hook-ups (and I'm not affiliated with Clydes) but this is where I picked up my Colt 6720 and they have the below in stock currently for $1,199.95.
Colt MP6920-FDE AR-15A4, 5.56mm, 1/7 Twist, Magpul MOE accessories, 2013 Config

Check with Grant and the other site supporters as well, since it never hurts to check around (more money for ammo).
Good luck and as long as you stick to the brands you'll see named around here you will get a quality AR (I'm just partial to Colt's since I have a couple).

welcome to this board after reading for 8 months on this board I decided to go with a BCM. I think Colt makes one hell of a weapon. and if you do go Colt the 6920 is with out a doubt the way to go. I can say this tho Thank you to all the Veterans on this board for your service and the Company's and every day shooters for this valuable info as I learned a thing or 2 about different rifles....
OP, you're ahead of the curve by asking what to get before you buy.
That is good.
Read up for a while and then "pull the trigger" on purchasing a new carbine.

This is where problem starts! You mentioned "...a horrible time to buy...." Yes, it is. The cheaper low-end brands like DPMS, Del-Ton, ST, Core15,RockRiver,Stag,BushMaster etc..are $elling for what you could've purchased a DanielDefense pre SandyHook. It's a tough market to be in. good luck

Nope, I saw a DD gun for below MSRP last weekend. Snatched it up :)

Strange thing is the same store was charging $40 for AK promags
The only things that were sanely priced were the guns

BCM or Daniel Defense. Save money on the front end. Can't go wrong with those.
Yes, you are. It's on page 355.
Odd...I don't recall wanting the M4 profile ever being an issue with any of the now banned condescending jerkoffs here. Perhaps you're looking to fill their void, followed by a one up?
I am new too - welcome.
Check out the New to Firearms section. Chalked full of good info over there.

It was a joke. As my subsequent posts made clear. Markm got it.
I agree with all the read and educate comments. You see a lot of nice AR's on this site. It doesn't mean you have to get all the latest and greatest add-ons, upgrades on your 1st purchase. A respected brand, base model is the way to go.
Agree with all those who said read and educate yourself first. There is plenty of info here at M4carbine.net to keep you going for many days. Make yourself a pot of coffee (with caffeine) and start using the search button.
I was recently new to AR's as well. Luckily I found this place and bought a DD. Fortunately they held the line on their pricing and I didn't have to overpay.

+1 I have stair stepped my up from the cheaper side of ARs to the good ones. Would have been way cheaper to have gotten it right the first time. Colt, BCM, DD.... I am currently running a BCM middy. Good luck.

Yeah;) I agree. Pay for the best and cry once or go cheap and cry forever.

Also dont get caught up in all the bullshit thats out there. I see a bunch of people who have guns decked out for a picture.....why? No really why? What you really need is a good gun, ammo, mags(pmags with windows are bada$$), whatever optics you want and shoot the piss out of it. Thats my 2cents.
There are two DD V4's on Gunbroker right now for $1500 or less. Prices appear to be getting back to normal. Thank goodness.

....like half of the guys on this site!!!!! ...and not to mention the pics with half naked, low budget looking girl posing with never fired rifles! Hilarious! LowRider magazine, but with rifles:laugh:
If you can find and Nice Daniel Defense in your price range, GRAB it and then focus on a good sling, learn to shoot with irons and then maybe look at a good red dot
