View Full Version : Home defense shotgun - Siaga 12 or Wilson combat

I've got a Wilson Combat "Standard" shotgun as my home defense shotgun. I have a Saiga 12 conversion on order. I was thinking about selling the Wilson Combat and making the Saiga the home defense shotgun.

The best argument I've read for this pertains to those of us with kids still in the house. The theory is that Saiga can be accessible and the loaded mag kept close, but away from the shotgun. In a crisis, they could, in theory, be quickly mated together.

With the Wilson Combat, the shells would have to be manually loaded in the tube (again, assuming that the shotgun cannot be kept loaded), which would take more time than simply inserting one pre-loaded magazine.

Thoughts pro and con for the Wilson or the Saiga as a home defense shotgun?

especially for Raid reloads, I don't know if you've seen what Tromix has been doing with Saiga's but i don't think a combat shotgun can be much better..

The tromix product is nice, but the waiting list is mighty long!

Unless personal finances dictate the need to sell the Wilson, why don't you keep it and make the Saiga your HD shotgun?

I have an EAA-imported Saiga-12 (back when CDNN was selling them for $269) and a Wilson Border Patrol package Remington 870.

I've purchased the Saiga long before the 870 and only got it because someone sold it NIB dirt cheap. However, there is a side benefit behind my having purchased the 870: my agency uses the 870 with extended magazines and ghost rings; so I use my 870 as a training shotgun.

+1. That said, I had a Saiga-12 and a Remington 11-87 Police at one time. Now I have two Saiga-12s and no Remington, so I don't practice what I preach. :D

If your Saiga-12 is already converted, you don't have to do much to make it HD-ready... just throw on a white light and a sling. I also added an AK-style front sight tower with a tritium post to mine.

Can't beat the Big Russian Hammer for home D.

As for kids, like you mentioned, you can keep a loaded mag near the Saiga, whereas the Wilson's tube would have to be loaded. I'd go with the Saiga given the kids.

Any of you guys keep your saiga mags loaded for a long time, either in or out of gun?

My kids are too young right now to get the safety off and rack one into the chamber, if they could even find it.

This pic has been around the SG thread before but this is what I use for primary HD, with Less than Leathal rounds just incase (kids sleep downstairs so I have to move to them in emergency)

Yes; the BRH is kept with a loaded mag inserted, and an empty chamber. I regularly pull the mag and inspect the top round for deformation. If/when it gets noticeable, the offending round is tossed into the range bag and replaced with a new one.

Saigas have always been really interesting to me. I'm gonna have to buy one eventually.

Personally, I'd skip the Wilson altogether. The 870P Max has all the same features of the Wilson Standard and is $300 less.

Jim Fuller has been doing some amazing work with AKs and Saigas. I haven't had the opportunity to try one of his Saiga yet, but have shot a few of his AKs.
