I asked the same thing.

Apparently there is a belief that if you wear bright colors you are immune from bullets....

...which explains why I've also seen pictures of a dude in a purple DRESS with a blonde WIG running through the streets with his AK....

You'd figure after they watched a few cross-dressing nutcases get dropped by a bullet that myth would die...but as you can see from the above photo, it's not like the fighters over there are very skilled with their weapons.

I always figured the guy wearing the life jacket was imitating an actual soldier he may have seen wearing body armor.

Body armor is stiff and thick.

Life vest is stiff and thick.

Therefore, life vest = body armor....

The bright colors idea is probably more accurate though.
