Well I got my new XLR Tactical chassis in last week, let the fun begin.. I purchased a used Rem 700 SPS Tactical in 308 with a Simmons 6.5 20x50 scope a few months ago, bought a pile of ammo, hit the range and fired off 10-15 rounds to check it out. It was nice, grouped ok I guess. I'm not a long range shooter by any stretch although I have purchased a few big guns the last year or so. I had a new Savage 338 Lapua, shot it once or twice loved it, but I know I may never get a chance to stretch it's legs out, not to mention... try putting it in your gun vault... so I sold it and purchased something else..... like an M1a Socom 16". Liked shooting that one a lot, but that's packed away for now cause it's time to do this Rem 700 up.

I researched info for days about the rem, deciding I wanted to upgrade the stock and convert it over to a magazine loader vs the top loader. I found my options would run me about $1200 and up to begin with. While searching I came across the XLR Industries chassis. It was love at first sight... I read up on it, searched the internet for reviews and decided this was what I wanted. It has everything I want and more. It includes a fully adjustable butt stock with adjustable cheek rest, Ergo overmold tactical AR grip, all aluminum chassis and handguard and is ready to accept Accuracy International Magazines. All that for under $800!!! But one of the big reasons I was attracted to it is I did not need to send it to a gunsmith to have the barrel bedded or attempt to do it myself.

So here's the chassis I settled on above and below is a picture of my Rem 700 as I bought it. It's the smaller of the 2 rifles, the big one is the Savage 338 Lapua.

Here is the Rem after I installed it into the new XLR chassis.. INSTALLATION WAS PRETTY STRAIGHT FOWARD AND EASIER TO INSTALL THAN IT IS TO MOUNT A SCOPE!!

I made it to the range today, in between wind and rain, I accomplished more than I could have ever asked for. Remember, I am impatient, shaky, half blind and sure that I suffer from ADHD... I have zero experience shooting long range and just screw around from time to shooting my AR's at 100yds, but that is only plinking. I have tried to read as much as my short attention span and even shorter memory would allow on the subject and skill needed to shoot accurately. I have more mods planned for this gun like a mono pod, maybe a better bi-pod and lots of tweaking to get my stock adjusted just right. I will tell you now, my bi pod was too tall and I was unable to get any degree of comfort while sitting at the table with either the cheek weld or the butt stock. I have lots of adjusting I can do, but needed a shorter bi-pod to begin with. I had a 6"-9" at home, the 9"-12" was just too high... here's some pics of my target. I shot 20 rds of Lellier and Bellot FMJ 147 grs at this target after sighting in the scope with 5 rds of bulk 7.62mm51 FMJ 149grs.

The 4th group was the best, with the spread being 3\4" - 1\2" center to center on the holes vertical by horizontal.. all groups were 5 shots at 100yds.

I know I need to work on the basics now, lots to learn, but I think this is a good start. I'll be looking for that post Orka posted about the basics... I tried reading it a few times a while ago, but my attention span kept booting me out.. I already plan to go back out tomorrow with the lower bi-pod and work on getting a comfortable position..

Great looking rifle. Keep practicing and you will get better. Be patient.

decent groups from 147gr. I didnt find 147gr to be that consistent in my 700. Once you move to 168gr match it will blow your mind

You could certainly bump up the weight of your bullets well past the 147. I am shooting 210 and 215 Berger VLDs with awesome results. Dont be afraid to experiment a bit. Just start slow and low with your loads.

Thanks guys for the input.

Bruce, thank you for your input. I don't reload yet, although I have purchased most of the products needed. I have some 168gr I'll be trying soon, but no doubt, I need to work on my posture, grip, get my stock adjusted, a better bipod than my $40 Champion.. I just have not felt comfortable shooting on the table. I went out again last week with a friend and was able to shoot a 1\2" 5 shot group... so I'm pretty pumped with the potential..

You are correct, move to the smaller bi-pod, it will help quite a bit. Your 147gr is complete and utter dog shit, so I think you shot quite well with that ammo.

Buy Federal Gold Metal match ammo. It comes 168 and 175 grain bullets. It will shoot much much better.

Nice rig you have started, keep on shooting and enjoy the ride.

Thanks Pappa, I did get another cheap 6-9" bi pod, It helped in getting a better position, but I still need to get the stock adjusted and get my head feeling like it's not twisted upside down to look into the scope... I'm thinking I want to get a mono pad for the butt stock, there is provisions for a small pic. rail to accommodate it. But for now, I'll use a sand bag to support it next time out.

I have so much work to do here, this isn't as simple for a newbie as one might think.. I appreciate any input or suggestions.

The fact that you're getting that good of groups with 147 is a testement to these Remmies of late.

They are putting out a pretty decent barrel. I went out with a buddy and his SPS in an AI chasis and that sucker shot a 1/2" group during his break in session... 175 SMKs.

put some match loads or Gold Medal Match in it and groups will be even tighter

+1 on the 175 SMK. My OBR loves them.
