Well I got my new XLR Tactical chassis in last week, let the fun begin.. I purchased a used Rem 700 SPS Tactical in 308 with a Simmons 6.5 20x50 scope a few months ago, bought a pile of ammo, hit the range and fired off 10-15 rounds to check it out. It was nice, grouped ok I guess. I'm not a long range shooter by any stretch although I have purchased a few big guns the last year or so. I had a new Savage 338 Lapua, shot it once or twice loved it, but I know I may never get a chance to stretch it's legs out, not to mention... try putting it in your gun vault... so I sold it and purchased something else..... like an M1a Socom 16". Liked shooting that one a lot, but that's packed away for now cause it's time to do this Rem 700 up.
I researched info for days about the rem, deciding I wanted to upgrade the stock and convert it over to a magazine loader vs the top loader. I found my options would run me about $1200 and up to begin with. While searching I came across the XLR Industries chassis. It was love at first sight... I read up on it, searched the internet for reviews and decided this was what I wanted. It has everything I want and more. It includes a fully adjustable butt stock with adjustable cheek rest, Ergo overmold tactical AR grip, all aluminum chassis and handguard and is ready to accept Accuracy International Magazines. All that for under $800!!! But one of the big reasons I was attracted to it is I did not need to send it to a gunsmith to have the barrel bedded or attempt to do it myself.

So here's the chassis I settled on above and below is a picture of my Rem 700 as I bought it. It's the smaller of the 2 rifles, the big one is the Savage 338 Lapua.

Here is the Rem after I installed it into the new XLR chassis.. INSTALLATION WAS PRETTY STRAIGHT FOWARD AND EASIER TO INSTALL THAN IT IS TO MOUNT A SCOPE!!

I made it to the range today, in between wind and rain, I accomplished more than I could have ever asked for. Remember, I am impatient, shaky, half blind and sure that I suffer from ADHD... I have zero experience shooting long range and just screw around from time to shooting my AR's at 100yds, but that is only plinking. I have tried to read as much as my short attention span and even shorter memory would allow on the subject and skill needed to shoot accurately. I have more mods planned for this gun like a mono pod, maybe a better bi-pod and lots of tweaking to get my stock adjusted just right. I will tell you now, my bi pod was too tall and I was unable to get any degree of comfort while sitting at the table with either the cheek weld or the butt stock. I have lots of adjusting I can do, but needed a shorter bi-pod to begin with. I had a 6"-9" at home, the 9"-12" was just too high... here's some pics of my target. I shot 20 rds of Lellier and Bellot FMJ 147 grs at this target after sighting in the scope with 5 rds of bulk 7.62mm51 FMJ 149grs.

The 4th group was the best, with the spread being 3\4" - 1\2" center to center on the holes vertical by horizontal.. all groups were 5 shots at 100yds.
I know I need to work on the basics now, lots to learn, but I think this is a good start. I'll be looking for that post Orka posted about the basics... I tried reading it a few times a while ago, but my attention span kept booting me out.. I already plan to go back out tomorrow with the lower bi-pod and work on getting a comfortable position..
