View Full Version : Feeding issue. Maybe

I'm somewhat new to the AR platform, so Im not sure if this is a common thing or if there's a way to fix it. So on to my issue.

When I let go of the charging handle, sometimes the bullet will hang up on the feed ramp and stop. But if I lock it back and drop the bolt catch it'll feed it right in. Doesn't seem to matter how full the mag is and I just cleaned everything. Here's what is happening to the bullets

And here's the feed ramps. Its a YHM 14.5" (chrome, M4 ramps)

Is it ok if I go in and knock those sharp corners off of the feed ramps? It wont affect the lockup, right? Or is there something else I should look at first? I bought the barrel last year and put about 700 rounds through it without issue until now. The only associated thing Ive changed is the BCG, which went from a Daniels Defense to a Fail Zero. I'd switch back, but I sold the DD to my buddy because he couldn't find a BCG.

Thanks guys

Have you tried other mags?
Is your buffer spring within spec for length?
Is your mag catch adjusted properly?

Yep, multiple mags have done it. I have a couple more chrome silicon springs I could try. That's what's in there now.

I don't see how a bolt catch would cause it to stop feeding since its past the catch at that point... but it seems to be free enough without binding and returns to where it should without any help.

If you have a whole other AR. Try it's lower with this upper to see if its an upper problem or lower problem.

FYI- spring on the ejection port cover door is installed wrong AFAICS.

Is your charging handle bent or tweaked? Try a different one.

A few possibilities-

-Not pulling the charging handle all the way back
-Not releasing the handle cleanly and are "riding" it a short distance. Release it quckly, like shooting a slingshot
-Action spring is worn (not likely if rifle is new)
-Rifle is new and the friction of the new finish is slowing the charging handle. This has the same affect as riding the charging handle. With use, this will go away
-A combination of any or all of the above

Simple fix-
-Locking the bolt back and hitting the release works everyn time. Stick with that method. If it's a new rifle, chances are the problem will go away with use

+1 on riding the charging handle.

I recommend that you get some dummy rounds and stop using live ammo.

Does this happen with any type of ammunition? It is possible to have a burred edge on a ramp causing inconsistencies, but as always make sure the guns is properly lubricated and make sure to not ride that charging handle.

I'll pay closer attention to how I charge it with the handle. I usually put my first mag in on a closed bolt, so maybe I should start locking it back and hitting the button.

I was experiencing this out at my buddies place when I was zeroing my new optic... Pictures were taken inside obviously, but thanks for lookin out

Ammo... it's been with a couple kinds. Winchester white box 5.56 and another brand, cant remember but the cases are stamped LC.

Thanks guys
