View Full Version : 5.56 Load Data for SBR (10.5" to 12.5")

I'm looking for some good 5.56 load data for use in a a suppressed SBR (10.5" to 12.5" barrel).

For most loads, the manuals I have use a standard 20" barrel and I've been unable to locate a lot of information for shorter barrels. It's been my experience that a lot of powders behave a lot different, especially when there is less barrel length and many are not linear.

Any ideas on powders that work better on an SBR and burn cleaner?

I would think you would get best velocities with a faster powder like h322 or aa2230.

I run 21.0 IMR 4198 with a Hord 55 FMJ in a 10.5. Your not really going to get much over 2550 in a 10.5 if I recall correctly. Work up as I've seen alot of variations between lots in the past 20 years. You could probably get away with RE7, IMR 3031 and a few others. I know there is data for 4198 and 3031. Re7 might be alittle quick and case capacity low.

I run XBR 8208 with 77 gr OTMs. I like H322, but it's more of a benchrest powder... and it's known for good accuracy, but lower velocities.

What bullet are you looking to shoot?

AR Comp 25.2 grains and a 55 FMJ LC brass Tula primers @ 2.245" COL: Velocity 2780 ft/secs.

This barrel appears to be 50 ft/secs slower than my companions 11.5 BCM... But mines more accurate. LOL. :)

I have a variety available from 77gr OTM's to 55gr FMJ. I'm not concerned with necessarily using what I have on-hand. I was thinking of working something up with either RE-7, TAC, or RE-10x. RE-7 is a pretty fast powder and I'm thinking it might do pretty good with a 62gr bullet.

I found a post awhile back stating RE-7 and 55gr bullets in a 20" AR did not quite have enough gas to lock the bolt back, but did reliably run the gun. I'm guessing such a load might be a gem with a suppressed SBR.

I wound up with some Reloader 10x (because it was all they had) and it seems to run the gun (14.5" mid) well in the 24-25gr range it's also super clean! I haven't had time to print it yet but the other markers are positive!

So you're moving away from your 77gr OTM / H322 combo? What kind of velocity numbers were you getting?

For some reason i have not found a 55 gr load that works worth a damn in my DD 10.3.

However, it loves heavier OTM loads. I have had good results with Markm's semi-patented 77 SMK load and TAC under 75 OTM. Both shoot about 1-1.5 inch off a bench at 100 yards.

Hell no! We just bought 32 lbs of H322 yesterday. I'm messing with bumping the H322 load up to 21.8 from 21.6... and maybe even going over that max to see what we get.

My comment was only to point out that the guy above was citing H322 as a fast powder that would get the OP velocity. Not the case.

I load XBR for stash ammo to fight tyranny. H322 is still our pride and joy accuracy powder.

I'd buy those 5k packs of 75s from Wideners and forget the 55. I almost don't have a desire to shoot 55s anymore. I'm hooked on the heavies. 5 years ago, you'd never have heard me say that. :p

Ditto! Markm, your 69gr load shoots lights out in my rifles so that is my plinking round.

Those 69 grainers are lasers. The work good on the ACOG reticles too.

I'm literally purging all my XM193 stash ammo. I have no desire to shoot it, and guys need it for classes and stuff. I'm hooked on good ammo. :p

I am with you on all counts. I still have a few hundred 55s left that I will load for my buds; other than that I am finished with them.

21.8 is what I have my load set too. Great accuracy. Could probably go higher but haven't yet.

So how much velocity are you gaining with the XBR? And how much accuracy do you lose?

And what makes it a better tyranny stopper than H322? Lol

It's not apples to apples.

XBR was developed by a buddy to mimmick the Mk262. It's way over published max and is about 200 fps faster. Shoots just as accurate though.

The problem was that when I switched lots I started getting blown primers. I'm back to loving H322 again. I adjusted the XBR load down 4 tenths and use it for stash/tyranny fighting ammo.

There's no denying the love of H322 in the fight against muslim tyranny.

Now where the hell did you find so much powder? I've been on backorder for powder and primers from Grafs since December!

Wish I could find 322 :( I'm slumming it with TAC

Remington bench 7 1/2 (or CCI BR4 when I run out)
Hornady 75gr BTHP
23.5gr TAC

Itching to see how these do out of the 11.5

H322 must not be popular in my area...we have plenty...good for me..

munch520, curious if you've tried out the Hornady 55gr GMX. I have a few hundred pulled bullets but haven't loaded any yet.

No sir haven't tried either. Been trying to coordinate a hunt and am saving the GMX for the hogs

ETA: I've heard some parallels between TSX and GMX, if the 55gr GMX is anything like the TSX, it'll be nothing short of awesome.
