Ok, don't list your favorite movie that everyone has seen. The idea is to enlighten others so that they can check them out. So with that in mind try not to post obscure silent German films from the 20s that are lost and out of print.

Ideally it should be something that is currently available on DVD, even more ideally available on Netflix where someone can watch it BEFORE they decide to buy it.

Give the name of the film, year, IMDb link and a brief synopsis.

My nomination is Ikiru (1952) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044741/?ref_=sr_1)

A bureaucrat tries to find a meaning in his life after he discovers he has terminal cancer.

This is a Kurosawa film but there are no samurai running around and unless you are a huge film fan and watch TCM regularly, you've probably never seen it.

Seven Samurai (1954)
Another Kurosawa. I haven't met many people who have seen it.

A poor village under attack by bandits recruits seven unemployed samurai to help them defend themselves.

1990, James Earl Jones... Powers Booth... the dad from Christmas Story... need I say more

"The crew of a nuclear bomber attack the Soviet Union while the President of the United States tries desperately to regain control of his military after his helicopter crashes during a limited nuclear exchange in this film with a scenario similar to _Fail Safe_ and _Dr. Strangelove_. Originally a made for cable movie, it concentrates on the relationship between a veteran pilot and his female co-pilot and the president's attempt to wrest control away from a war-mongering successor"

Sure, and as much as I generally dislike Redford, it's actually a really good film.

That was going to be my entry, good choice! It was the inspiration for The Magnificent Seven (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054047/).

Okay, I'll go with Citizen Kane (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033467/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1). Hard to believe that Orson Welles co-wrote, produced, directed, and starred in this film at the ripe old age of 25, his first at that.

A smart, well written, and quirky comedy from 1998. I use this movie as a test of a woman's sense of humor, if she doesn't get this movie there is a good chance we won't be compatible.

The Antibodies (2005)

It's a German film about a serial killer/child molester who reaches out to a cop in a rural town who's in the middle of another child murder investigation, and a bunch of shit happens, and I suck at describing plots.

Oh, and Norman Reedus is in it for like 5 minutes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibodies_(film)

^ That link contains ultra-spoilers. (Tells you how it ends.)

That one obviously doesn't.

I also love Rob Zombie's The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto. Animated film. Rediculously obscene, and a musical. Tits, nazis, robots, the whole shit. I love it.

Nanook of the North (1922, silent)

From Wikipedia, 'In 1989, this film was one of the first 25 films to be selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".'

This is truly a time capsule, showing a glimpse into the daily lives and hunting techniques of the Inuit as they were for centuries. The seal and walrus hunting scenes are epic. It was a way of life that was all but gone when this film was shot, some 91 years ago. EVERYONE should see this movie, and reflect on how "tough" we have it today!

La Strada, 1954, directed by Federico Fellini, produced by Carlo Ponti and Dino de Laurentiis. Wonderful performances by Anthony Quinn and Guilieta Masina. Story is of a girl sold by her family to a brutish traveling entertainer. Won Oscar for Best Foreign Language film, nominated for BAFTA best film.

While I'm at it:

La grande illusion, 1937, director Jean Renoir's humanist anti-war masterpiece, set in a German prisoner of war camp in WWI. With Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay, and Erich von Stroheim.

The Third Man, 1949, directed by Carol Reed, produced by David Selznick and Alexander Korda, starring Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, story of corruption in post-WWII Vienna.

Citizen Kane, 1941, co-written, directed by, produced by, starring Orson Welles. Story of the corruption of an idealistic youth with power.

The Rising of the Moon, 1957, directed by John Ford. Shot on a small budget in Ford's ancestral homeland, Ireland. A series of three stories of Irish life, with typical Ford touches of humor, beautiful visual composition, and pathos.

The Siege of Firebase Gloria (1989)

"At the start of the Tet Offensive a Marine unit on patrol stops at Firebase Gloria. When the base comes under attack the patrol remains to help aid in its defense. The Soldiers and Marines come under numerous attacks by the VC (Viet Cong), but in the end hold the base with assistance from the First Cavalry Division. While the Marines try and defend the base, the Viet Cong commander discovers that he is in a similar position: it was never his mission to win the battle, but to lead his men to their deaths in order to allow the North Vietnamese Army to take a more substantial role in the war. The Marines are subsequently forced to abandon the base having lost too many men in the process of defending it. In the end, the soldiers and commanders on both sides take stock of the loss of life for this single base."

The Lost City (2005)

Written, directed and produced by Andy Garcia.

An excellent film about the final days before Castro took over Cuba and how the revolution tore a family apart.

Garcia himself, escaped Cuba at age 6 with his family and is very anti-Castro and anti-communist.

The film shows what communism and Castro did to a once thriving and vibrant culture and economy. The damage that this type of system brings upon families and businesses and the tragedy that ensues.

A great film that is very well done and has great acting as well. Garcia does an amazing job on this film and it got almost no play in theaters.

It remains one of my favorite films and Garcia is one of my favorite actors.

http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0386064/

While its basically a copy of Saving Private Ryan. (The movie is well done and is not some cheap ripoff.) Its a story about 2 brothers. The younger joins the SK army and his older brother goes to keep him safe thus becoming a great fighter and hero but in the process slowly ends up loosing his mind. When he learns of his younger brother's death at the hands of a SK general he kills the general and defects to the NK....

I actually am relatively sure that Daniel Craig's character didn't die at the end. The specifically only show him shot. Not die, and the director even hinted that XXX didn't die.

Plus, .38 FMJ round to the lung at close range?

You could probably survive if you got medical attention fast enough.

This one might not be considered "Great" by many, but I love this movie. In fact- most would consider this movie complete trash, but it is a gem & favorite of my wife and I.

-Blood Diner (Remake of the Film "Blood Feast")

It has everything for wierdos like me...

-Topless karate/fight scene (You gotta watch it now- right Styer?)
-Group/musical chairs vomiting scene inside a restaurant
-A wrestling match featuring "Little Jimmy Hitler" VS. "Lucious LOU The Lumerian"
-A Lumerian Goddes (Schitar) resurected/pieced together using the body parts of about 20 or so sluts and the head of a virgin
-Topless aerobics gun fight scene
-Lots of gore (Crazy scholcky/campy gore)
-Cannibalism (Feeding people human flesh as "Vegan health food"- unknowingly)
-Terrible acting
-A talking brain

I could go on and on about why this movie is so great. If you like campy/scholcky 80's horror flicks, this one is for you.

Here is IMDB's terrbile description:
Two cannibalistic brothers kill various young women to make their flesh part of their new special dish at their rundown restaurant while seeking blood sacrifices to awaken a dormant Egyptian goddess.

+1 For Layer Cake and Brazil.

Time bandits, Brazil and the Adventures of baron von munchausen are actually a trilogy. A trilogy of "Imagination"/perspective of a child (Time Bandits) a man in his middle age (Brazil) and an old man (Baron Munchausen).

Quite brilliant & interesting when watched in order and seeing it through the perspective of a sinlge character telling his own story in different times of his life as viewed through the filter of his own imagination.

Others:
-The Phantom of Liberty
-Sushi Girl
-The man From Earth
-The Fountain
-Enter the void
-Bottle Rocket

I'll counter with Akira: the benchmark of Anime/cyberpunk/dystopian animation. The paper comic isn't a bad read, either.

The Man Who Would Be King: Sean Connery and Michael Caine as fools who try to "hustle the East"
The Wind and The Lion: Director John Milius was reportedly a stickler for using accurate firearms

We interrupt this programme to bring you an important new bulletin: the suspect in the Happy Times All-Girl Glee Club slaying has fled the scene and has managed to elude the police. He is armed and dangerous, and has been spotted in the West Side area, armed with a meat cleaver in one hand and his genitals in the other.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is also really good.

Also, the part where that dude gets a sandwich thrown at his bare ass is great. (Not in Twin Peaks. Lol.)

This is a Kurosawa film but there are no samurai running around and unless you are a huge film fan and watch TCM regularly, you've probably never seen it.

They shit on it because it's based on what's still considered perhaps the greatest sci fi novel of all time (you read it yes?) and produced an abortion of a movie from that classic book, with bad effects, bad acting, and all around cheese factor that made any fan of the book, wanna dig their eyes out with a spork.

Now that's a movie in serious need of a remake, and with current tech for special effects, good actors and a director who really "gets" the book and respected it (similar to what Peter Jackson
did for The Lord of the Rings) you'd have a great movie I'd even consider standing in line for as I did for Star Wars in the 70s as a kid.

Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) Directed by H.B. Halicki. Ok, the acting leaves a bit to desired but it has one of the top two car chases ever filmed. Every stunt was honest- no special effects- and was performed on the streets of San Pedro and the surround areas among everyday traffic. Most of the cars in each scene were driven by every day people

Bullit (1968) Starring Steve McQueen. The movie with the other of the top two car chases ever filmed. Everything I needed to know about driving, I learned from Lt. Frank Bullit. While two Mustangs were used, (A debadged GT390 and a debadged GTA390) the stunt driving was honest. Another thing I like is that it was filmed large panoramic views of San Francisco. You don't see that much in any film. It helped the jazz music was cool

Maltese Falcon (1941) Classic Bogey, classic film noir. Dialogue is straight out of the novel which means you get the dose of Dashiel Hammet's snappy repartee. Must see for any film buff

Young Frankenstein (1974) Beautifully filmed, wonderfully written and great acting. Marty Feldman was given full reign to explore the nuances of his character and the result is awesome

Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) Gagney, Bogart, Pat O'Brien and the Dead End Kids for the win. A story about good vs evil and the struggle for the hearts & minds of the youth caught in the poverty of the Great Depression. It makes a social statement and it's good look into the era. Another must see for the serious film buff

The Three Musketeers (1973) Well filmed, good acting, fast sword play and great fun!- and it has Raquel Welch dressed as a wench. What could be better?

This is a great topic. There are many to chose from, but I couldn't narrow it down to less than two. Both are sleepers, and both are outstanding.

A Bronx Tale

1993, staring Robert De Niro and Chazz Palminteri.

De Niro directed this and also had a small role. His first directing, I believe. Takes place in New York City in the 1960's. It's a story of growing up, making choices, and the consequence of those choices. The acting and the writing are superb.

We're No Angles

1955, staring Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray, and Peter Ustinov.

Takes place around 1900. Bogart, Ray and Ustinov are three escaped convicts from Devil's Island who hide out in a shopkeeper's store on Christmas Eve. It is one of the best Christmas movies ever (along with It's A Wonderful Life), and like IAWL, never was intended to be a Christmas classic.

We're No Angles is just plain fun. A true family movie.

Not sure if they are great, but I enjoyed them and most people either don't know them or haven't seen them if they have, but enjoy them when they watch them.

Spartan(2004) Has Val Kilmer in it. Has a few issues, but I always enjoy watching, and since most places that have the DVD I have seen run it for less then $5 its not to break the bank, finding the bastard can be something else though.
Two great lines in the movie.

"You had your whole life to prepare for this moment. Why aren't you ready?"

"You wanna to gossip or do you wanna shoot somebody?"

The other one is 9th Company(2005). I think some on here have seen it, kind of Russia's Platoon. Damn good movie for what it is.

Not sure if it counts, but Eastern Promises should get my honorable mention. I knew a lot of people who never heard of it and the plot was solid and it has a knife fight that is perhaps the most graphic I have seen and true to life. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

As far as Dune, Liked the book, couldn't stand the movie, granted I have issues with anyone who takes a book plot and ****s it to that extent. Don't even talk to me about the Bourne movies. The studio wanted to shoot the film in Los Angeles but it was McQueen who insisted it be shot in San Francisco. He wanted the hills in the chase scene. Bar none the best car chase ever filmed with The Seven-Ups and The French Connection in 2nd and 3rd. The famous stunt driver Bill Hickman acted/drove in all those films.

Maltese Falcon (1941) Classic Bogey, classic film noir. Dialogue is straight out of the novel which means you get the dose of Dashiel Hammet's snappy repartee. Must see for any film buff

Thanks to my father I have seen this many times as it is one of his favorites. I have a healthy appreciation for the classics because of him.

My mother's biggest celebrity crush has always been Richard Chamberlain. Due to this fact I cannot count how many times I have seen this and The Four Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Chamberlain is very talented and thanks to him brining these characters to life I have a good appreciation of Alexandre Dumas novels.

Great movie, I still think American Graffiti is still his best work and at this point probably ever will be. My father graduated high school in '59, I have always been envious of him for this. The film adaptions of Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy are great if you have never seen them and they have English subtitles.
I think non-Swedish speakers will appreciate them more than I did. Then again I abhor most Swedish movies (especially dramas and action). If you think Peter Stormare overacts in most of his movies, imagine a whole cast doing the same thing. :bad:

Anywho...

Miller's Crossing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100150/?ref_=sr_2) (trailer here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRFtPOj0XrE)) is one of my favorite movies and it gave us the classic line, "look into your heart," as a plea for mercy when someone puts a gun to your head. (Fun bit of trivia; "The Dane" was supposed to be called "The Swede" and to be played by Peter Stormare. The movie is better off without him.)

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373469/) (trailer here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1xsTRG-O04)) was great too. The banter between Harry, the main character, and "Gay Perry" is hilarious:

Harry: Still gay?
Perry: Me? No. I'm knee-deep in pussy. I just like the name so much, I can't get rid of it.

Since I've been dissing Peter Stormare I'll give him some props for Small Town Murder Songs (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1429392/) (trailer here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VB22oo_f8g0).) Stormare plays a police officer in a small Ontario Mennonite town who has to live down his past as he investigates the murder of a young female. The photo and the soundtrack by Bruce Peninsula is haunting.

Another favorite of mine is Primer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/?ref_=sr_1) (trailer here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CC60HJvZRE).) The movie was written, directed, scored and starred Shane Carruth, and it won all kinds of awards. It was Carruth's first movie, and it needs to be seen more than once. The plot? A group of friends run a small tech-company out of Aaron's garage in their spare time. One day Aaron's best friend Abe tells him he has something to show him. I don't want to tell you more than that. I walked into the movie theatre knowing nothing about what I was about to see, and I think that is the best way to see it.

I don't know if this movie fits in here, as the demographics is kinda skewed, but I still really like The Way of The Gun (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202677/) (there's no good trailer, so here's the opening scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQLXYu6plhg) instead,) which very few of my friends have seen (until I clue them in.) Two criminal drifters without sympathy get more than they bargained for after kidnapping and holding for ransom the surrogate mother of a powerful and shady man.

My two favorite time travel movies:

Time Crimes (Spanish language) and Primer.

Both are great movies. One usually has to watch Primer a couple of times to completely wrap ones head around it.

Pi is also a good one (this one hit netflix a while ago).

A couple of dark comedies that I enjoy are Happiness (first film I ever saw with Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and Welcome to the Dollhouse

Stalingrad (German Language) is about, you guessed it, Germans fighting in WWII.

The Ninth Company (Russian Language) is about a unit right at the end of the Soviet-Afghan war.

As Far As my Feet Will Carry Me (German Language) is about a German POW who escapes from Siberia. This one is also on Netflix now. Apparently based on a, "true story" (which was largely debunked after the film was made) but still makes for a good film. Noteworthy because it was one of the first German films that covers WWII POW's.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Movie about the IRA. Though it's English language I tend to watch it will subtitles turned on, haha

Hooper shows Burt and Hal Needham doing what they do best: not deviating too far from the buddy/stuntman genre.

The story is basically about movie stuntmen told from their point of view. Some of the stunts to my mind have never been equalled to this day. This movie was before filmakers began to "cheat" with CGI, so every stunt is the real thing.

Recommended for an evening with a few beers and some popcorn.

Hard to know what people have seen here, as movies I'd think everyone has obviously seen, may be too young to have seen them.

For example, everyone has seen Cool Hand Luke yes? Probably Paul Newman's most classic of all films:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061512/

Here's an obscure one I bet many have not seen that was a classic 70s gritty movie in the Dirty Hairy, Easy Rider, etc style of the day:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070022/

Robert Blake's first real movie before he got his long running TV series and like those in the genre of the day, an intense movie.

Hard for me to hate an early 80s film with Sean Young in it. Between Stripes and Blade Runner I had a thing for her.

Eastern Promises was excellent, but being a Cronenberg film that is hardly surprising. The guy just has a knack.

Loved Blade Runner, but like I said, with Dune I just didn't feel that it did the book justice. Though I do respect it for doing some firsts in film.

Kilmer's best film to date. I not only own this on DVD but I went to see this one in the theatre. CSM Eric Haney was the technical advisor for the film and even had a cameo as POTUS. He made this film before he helped create the TV series The Unit.

Another great movie, I loved the nurse's daughter!

Viggo Mortensen just might be one of the greatest actors of all time. I assume if you liked Eastern Promises then you enjoyed A History of Violence?

I don't know if I would say Spartan is Kilmer's best film, but I rank it up there nonetheless. I suppose I have a soft spot for his performance in Tomestone. Though I wish I could have seen Spartan in theaters.

And Mortensen is possibly one of the greatest, if nothing else then in my generation. There are perhaps a handful of actors who I would place up there with him in the past 15-20 years who I would see the movie just because they are in it. And a History of Violence was very good, personally prefer Eastern Promises though I have friends who lean towards a History of Violence. I suppose I just like the aspects of the Russian Mafia that was in Eastern Promises, that and I am working to learn Russian so..., and having watched some of the special features of Eastern Promises and hearing about some of the tattoos I always laugh thinking about them. Like the tattoos that were on Mortensen's feet, one asking, "Where are you going?" the other had "What the **** do you care?"

Speaking of Paul Newman
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean should not be missed. An obscure film few today know of.
It is a Tall-tale telling of the life of Roy Bean in late 1800s and early 1900s. The movie is a work of art and a joy to behold. I think it's Newman's best acting, period. Even better than Cool Hand Luke.

Great flick.

Rachel Ward was at the peak of hotness. Henry Silva can do the evil bad guy better than almost anyone. I still remember him from The Untouchables series. And it had Bruce Lee protegee Dan Inosanto giving most people their first look at a balisong.

Interesting back story. During casting Burt wasn't sure if "little Dan" could make a convincing bad guy or not so he picked up a prop stick and went after Dan with it. Dan basically dropped him with a hard right mostly out of reflex. Inosanto was positive it just cost him the part but to the credit of Reynolds he was hired at his insistence.

Ha I loved that too, the dialogue in that film was some of the best as was the gun play.

A little back story on the film, Viggo and Ed Harris are good friends in real life. Ed Harris was on vacation horse back riding across Ireland with his family (how cool would that be) when he read the novel of the same name. Liked it so much he decided to do a film adaptation. They had a very low budget, him and Viggo pretty much did the film for free. Jeremy Irons and Lance Henriksen were also in it. Also they had Tom Petty and Mudcrutch, his original band peform the title track.

If you guys want serious Samurai flicks, check out the original "Harakiri" (1962) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056058/?ref_=fn_al_tt_6) and "Chushingura" (1962). (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055850/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2)

I have seen Chushingura, a great movie. (But it was titled 47 Samurai on the copy I viewed, can't recall if I bought it or borrowed it...) I was also looking at Hara-Kiri: Death Of A Samurai last weekend, which looks to be a modern remake. I'll need to add that to the collection as well.

Chushingura is also known as the "47 Ronin", "47 Loyal Retainers", etc.

The remake of Hara-Kiri was directed by Takashi Miike and produced by Toshiaki Nakazawa and Jeremy Thomas, all of whom were involved in the remake of "13 Assassins", and while Hara Kiri had wonderful production values the remake suffered in many fundamentals ways and completely lacked the "spirit" and "meaning" of the original film.

In many ways it was like a beautifully furnitured elaborate katana with a bamboo blade. Watch the original first.

Some movie trivia for you.

William "Bill" Hickman (January 25, 1921 – February 24, 1986) was a stunt driver, actor, and stunt coordinator from the 1950s through to the late 1970s. Hickman played a major role in terms of development and execution in three of the greatest movie car chase sequences of all time: Bullitt, The French Connection and The Seven-Ups, all shot on actual city streets.

Really was an underrate film and probably his finest hour up to that point. He never really nailed it during his SNL years in the same fashion as Belushi, Aykroyd or Murray. I loved Caddyshack, but that was mostly due to Rodney. I liked Foul Play but again it wasn't because of Chase. Films like Modern Problems were just bizarre.

Vacation and Under the Rainbow were really the first two films he carried that were funny because of him rather than just being funny films he was in. Fletch really was the first film he was in that was an ok movie made great because of his contribution.

I of course have a fondness for Deal of the Century simply for his HK91 sales pitch but it was mostly a weak movie with a few funny moments.

And of course he really didn't start knocking them out of the park until films like Spies Like Us, Three Amigos and the rest of the Vacation franchise with Christmas Vacation probably being his crowning achievement.

Released in 1963, it's one of the best screw-ball comedies ever made, with a veritable "Who's Who" of Hollywood's best comedic actors (Spencer Tracey, Jonathan Winters, Milton Berle, Ethel Merman, Sid Caesar, Mickey Rooney, Phil Silvers, Don Knotts, Buddy Hackett, Jim Backus, Peter Falk, Carl Reiner, Dick Shawn, and the list keeps going) and replete with snappy dialogue, chase scenes galore, and slapstick antics.

It didn't get good reviews and I am leery of movies I've never heard of but I just watched Phantom. Being a huge fan of submarine movies and Ed Harris I rented it. The entire Cold War subsurface Soviet/U.S. cat and mouse game fascinates me.

If you are into sub flicks you may like it. There are many theories as to why K-129 sank and this takes the extreme theory 's point of view. Not sure if the ship in the movie is designated K-129 but it is based on what happened to her.

Interesting fact is this is the same ship that we partially salvaged a few years after it sank. Project Azorium I think it was called. The ship that did the recovery was called the Glomar Explorer. Built by none other than one of Howard Hughes' companies.

Just watched this one. That is truly one strange movie. Not a bad film, but whoever imagined the basic premise should be watched very closely.

Watched that one earlier this week. Thought it was a great film. Sub movies usually bore the crap out of me because it's always such a similar movie. The only other sub movies I can watch are Das Boot and Hunt for Red October.
