View Full Version : Extraction issue

I just finished my AR build and went out to test fire it today. It will feed the first round but it will not extract a spent cartridge. To remove the spent cartridge I had to run a cleaning rod down the barrel and push it out which it did rather easily. My first thought was that the extractor was not fully engaging the round. But after looking at the spent cartridge further you can see where the extractor has basically ripped off part of the lip it grabs to extract the shell. Any ideas?

Need more info like what ammo are you shooting and who's barrel/upper is it?

Upper: DPMS receiver with Les Baer Custom BCG, YHM free float tube, AR Stoner 5.56 16" barrel.

Is the bolt and extractor brand new or is it known-good?

Pull it out and check to see how well the extractor grabs and releases a spent case.

Hook an empty case on the extractor, pull on the mouth sideways to compress the ejector and then do a flick test to verify it flies at least 3 feet.

This should give you an idea if the extractor is working well or not.

If you have another BCG to swap with next time out, try that.

I suspect the barrel is overgassed.

Is it a 16" CAR or midlength gas? Do you know the gas port size?

What's the make of the barrel? Oops missed it. I would have the chamber checked as I haven't been impressed with anything AR stoner so far. It might be a tight or rough chamber.

Hot 5.56 ammo in a .223 chamber.

I'm willing to bet nothing about that barrel is in spec. I may be wrong....

Low quality parts will give you low quality performance.

That is exactly what I am afraid of.

Stop shooting 5.56 pressure ammo until you can verify the chamber dimension.
If it is not 5.56, you can have it reamed. Or just shoot commercial spec ammo.

I have stopped shooting it completely until I get everything about the barrel verified.

It's defective. Pull it off, send it back to Midway for a refund and replace it with a quality barrel.

I just finished speaking with their customer service and I will be sending it back ASAP. Unfortunately it is beyond the 60 day time limit so they will only give me store credit for the full purchase price. What barrels would you all recommend I look at?

I was just looking at that exact barrel.

Every barrel I have is either Noveske or DD. You can't go wrong.

I just ordered it. Hopefully it will be here in a few days and I can test it.

Hard to go wrong with a DD barrel.

The new barrel arrived yesterday and I installed it last night. I took it out over my lunch break today and everything worked great.

I have been waiting to put my muzzle device on until I had the extraction issue figured out so after the successful test I decided to put on the YHM compensator that I had got to try. While it did seem to lessen the recoil some the concussion was to much for me, my ears are still ringing. I will use my standard FH instead.

Thanks for all of the advice.
