Its more of an info thread than pic thread, and its pretty hard to keep it all straight since they're constantly updating the designs. I didn't realize they have MOD numbers on them though, that'll help.
I didn't realize they have MOD numbers on them though, that'll help.
not all of them do. it looks like mine is an earlier mk2 version (no "rev" or qd hole). Does anyone know of all the different variations? it'd be nice to get a list going of what changes are made to each revision
Here's a list I've kept to get you started. I've built uppers with the following versions so these are all confirmed. I don't know if this list is complete but feel free to add if you can confirm something not shown:
MKI 10", 13" (Slick, smallest OD, threaded inserts to attach rails direct)
Version 1: Original design. Steel barrel nut. Heli-coil barrel nut bolt holes. Oversize phillips-head socket cap bolts. Laser engraving along top.
Version 2: Exactly the same as V1 but with QD sockets on both sides.
Version 3 (Current): Bottom vent holes redesigned to pear shape. Steel nut updated to new chamfered design. Anti-rotation "wings" reduced to smaller tabs like MKIV. Bolts updated to lo-pro allen head socket caps and are countersunk into rail like MKIV. Phosphated steel retainer countersunk on opposite side like MKIV. Laser engraving moved near barrel nut like MKIV. Black anodizing has a blue tint to it.
MKII 9.5", 10", 13" (Slick, larger OD, removable keyed backer plates that serve as mounts for rails)
Version 1: Original design. Steel barrel nut. Heli-coil barrel nut bolt holes. Allen socket cap bolts with slight countersink.
Phosphated steel retainer flush-mount on opposite side like MKIV. Laser engraving moved near barrel nut like MKIV. (Also, note that the 9.5" rail has replaced the 10" rail.)
MKIV 9.5", 13" (Slick with short fixed rails at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock)
Version 1: Original design. Only current rail with aluminum barrel nut. Small anti-rotation wings. Larger head allen socket cap bolts, countersunk. Phosphated steel retainer flush-mount on opposite side. Laser engraving near barrel nut.
Version 2 (Current): Aluminum nut updated to new chamfered design. Bolts are newer lo-pro allen head socket caps. Vent holes below barrel nut removed.
You could also add the following prototypes and specials that have been shown publicly:
• The "Trident" Rail — 13" MKIV (Sand) rail w/ square bottom vent holes (owned by a member here)
• Citizen Arms Rails — 9.5" & 13" MKII & MKIV rails with HK416 style keyed anti-rotation
• Cola Warrior Rails — (2) 13" MKIV rails (Sand, Grey), with special engraving and HK416 style keyed anti-rotation
• Keymod rail — 9.5" MKIV (in the white) proof of concept shown recently by Bill

why the jump from 2 to 4 then back to 3? was it still under development or something?

Not sure how to interpret your post?
You set aside aluminum for the Mk3, or is the Mk3 made out of something else?

GREAT post.
Now if only companies like BCM would ship uppers with the MK1 actually installed (other than the Jack rifle).
I'm really curious to see the MKIII. I'm guessing the Keymod version of the MKIV.

Jesus. Why is there so many variations? Is there a market out there for 20 variants of a $250+ rail? Or are they discontinuing some?

Making handguards for the standard AR DI setup & one for the HK 416 would demand 2 different versions right off the bat.

They are not as much variations as they are updates. Due to the speed and quantity produced, the different revisions were not available at the same time. There are revisions to each version of the MK1,2, and 4. The properties of the different marks remain the same. MK1 as direct thread, MK2 backing plates, MK4 slick with permanent rail sections at the muzzle end.
The different revisions include low pro cross bolts, lighter weight due to more aggressive vents on the bottom of the rail, updated barrel nut, integral qd swivel locations, and reduced anti rotation wings. These have all come about to make a more versatile polished product. At least for the M4 type rifles. I am fairly ignorant with any revisions on the HK416 family of SMR Rails. Any current available models and future models, for the M4 series rifles, will incorporate these updates and possibly more.
That being said, they should have left the wings the original larger size and left the vent holes symmetrical. If those variations were available in the MK1 and MK2, I would buy two more.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way.
I don't care so much about the wings, but the two different style vent holes bother me too. Too busy looking I think.
The MkIII 15" has been shown on ARF. No release date yet, but according to Bill it's possibly within the next few days.
Scroll about half way down. Here (http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_444/221861_Geissele_Super_Modular_Rail_is_available.html&page=16)
Here's my Mk4 on a complete LaRue Stealth upper receiver. The Geissele weighs around half of what the LaRue 13.2" that I took off did.

I agree. I don't like the difference in the vent holes either. Its easy enough to put the obround hold back, however the "angle bridged rectangles" are the lightest, strongest profile that has openings that will not allow a finger to be inserted.
We had big open rectangles on the Mod 0 but fingers could be caught in the holes. Or burned on the barrel.
Its a trade off, a different look that is not consistent top to bottom or a heavier rail.

What about putting the angle bridged rectangles on top too? I'm assuming there must have been a specific reason as to why the old top vent holes have not been incorporated in the redesign?

There is a 45 deg QD swivel attachment point that can go in the top slots. Not that I have ever sold any but we have it designed and made.
Thats why the top slots were never changed.
I personally like the obrounds top and bottom.

I'm not sure you can build a rifle better than that one besides going w/ a SD trigger model, and the CASS ST model imho. Perfect specimen head to toe. What are the specs?
I'm pretty sure I know almost exactly how that rifle feels, handles, and shoots.....as I got one kinda like it :)

the "angle bridged rectangles" are the lightest, strongest profile that has openings that will not allow a finger to be inserted.
I don't think anything more needs to be said. Light and strong is a lot more important than looks (and they look perfectly fine to me.) I'm glad for the improvement.
Edit: Actually, I'd prefer those on the top too, if it means lighter weight. You can always add a QD mount on the side.

Nice man. When are you getting it cerakoted?
thanks- i decided not to. i couldnt decide on a color and also i couldnt justify spending another $200 on a color change when i still dont have a light for it.
im also over trying to chase down another version of this rail. once i got it put together, the mk2 feels very solid and i see no reason to change
edit- except maybe for the same rail in sand :)

Funny, we have similar builds. I just ordered the latest Mini Scout light last night and that completes the parts for the build. I was fortunate enough to have sold my MK4 and purchased a MK2 Rev C in sand from a fellow member before they disappeared. It does feel solid and the sand finish is perfect which is why I feel a little guilty having it cerakoted. But as a soon as I get a new lower from Noveske (fitment issues), I'll be shipping it off to JFE and dealing with a color dilemma.
What ACOG is that?
its a ta31 acog. ive seen a pic of your rifle and youre right, they are similar (i was this close >< to buying the rail you have now from the EE, but i couldnt send a pm bc the site was acting up, then i changed my mind at the last minute, lol). the surefire mini scout is even the light im looking at (m300 to be exact) :D

I have to admit that your build was the inspiration.

KAC 300m Micro Rear and KAC 99051 Black Front BUIS

KAC Ambi Safety and Mag release
FDE VTAC 2pt sling with QD's
IWC QD sling mount
I'd thought I would share this here. I wanted to attach a sling but without using qd mounts. I had a left over stud from a sling swivel kit and cut it down to fit. I also (crudely) cut a spacer out of something plastic I found in my junk drawer. The stud happen to be the same pitch as the backing plate.

voila- low profile sling stud

Anyone know which of the iwc handstops match the contour of the MKI rail? Earl said to order the one for the MOE's but I don't want a flat one. I'd like one that fits the rail so it doesn't rotate if banged to hard on something
There's a lot of options as you can see

I will get you the specs, in little bit. Anything your looking for In particular? The lighting may be off a tad but yeah it is supposed to be sand. I am getting it Cerakoted FDE so I am not crazy about the color, but so far I really like the rail. I am going to the range in about an hour so I will be able to give a better review of it when I get back. If I have not already started doing the whole accented FDE crap I would not even give a shit but I may as well finish what I started. The color at least on the Mark 3 I have is like a volcano rock sand, again I am totally fine with it, I just appreciate everything that the nice people at Geissele have done for me. Great products and great people.
I have had the MK2 Rev C which I feel was the closest to FDE or sand, then the MK4 Rev B which had a more red tone to it. Then the MK3 Rev B which as I said has the most red tint to it, but I still like the color, specially for the area surroundings, it blends in very well. I am going to get pictures in natural lighting so I can better give you an idea of what it looks like.
Main question is would I be right to assume that is a 16" barrel?

It's not red but it's no match for FDE either. Looks like Geissele is having a hard time keeping their anodizing consistent. Machining quality is top notch though.
I have yet to see any manufacture be able to hold a perfect matching color batch after batch. I believe that's just the nature of colored anodizing in most colors

Outstanding build brother...absolutely no corners cut! That lower w/ those controls is just awesome imho. IWS lowers, short throw selectors, and the new Geissele triggers will spoil the sh*t outta you though.
I'd make that rifle mine in a heartbeat, and the only things I'd change would be adding a KAC micro front (which I imagine you might be doing), along with changing the grip to a MOE +.
Great minds think alike apparently :p

Thanks man, I appreciate the praise. This rifle has turned out to be pretty close to perfect, and you are right these controls absolutely spoil you fast. Picking up a traditional rifle just doesn't cut it anymore.
The Micro front will be the next step, and then I'll probably Cerakote in tungsten or hydro dip it Kryptek Highlander.

The picture was just to be used as a reference to any tube style rail with a MOE grip to be directly attached to the rail.. I understand the Geissele rails do not have a radius on the bottom area like a real tube style so I want to see how much modification is required to made it work.

It's nice enough not to send it off and have a battlecomp pinned on but I like the battlecomp best so far. Swapped my NSR for a 13" SMR MK1 in sand which is a little more brown than sand to me. I like it a lot. Ordered a Aero Precision burnt bronze upper to go with it (and also it wouldn't fit my MUR upper). Install was simple and straight forward with the Geissele reaction rod.

Your mix seemed to be pretty dang close from the pictures at least.
Is it possible to run some kind of VFG on the MK4? I'd like to put a section of rail or the VFG right behind the 6 o' clock rail.

Some people have used the Mkll rail kit, but they only work on the older MklV rail due to spacing on the bottom vent holes. I use shims for my KAC URX 3.1 rail panels but I'm not sure how they would hold up to pressure from a VFG. They work for the panels though.

I am having such a hard time figuring out which way I want to take my current RECCE build. I just got in the 16" Rainier Select today and the barrel decision took me over a month so I can only imagine how long the handguard decision is going to take.
I thought I was all set on BCM's new KMR but I'm now having second thoughts.
I love the SMR but I also love the PRI (Gen3) and BCM KMR.
Whats funny is that the 3 handguards are completely different from each other. I just don't know what to do.

I'm feeling pretty stupid. What's the purpose of the "shim"? I'm thinking spacers or something?
The side panels of the KAC panel kit bolt directly onto the rail, the bottom onto the square nut. It looks like you have the side and bottom panels on. Are you using the hardware that came with the kit?
How much modification did it take if any to get them to sit flush?
This is on a MK4 right?

Yes. MklV. The shims are to add spacer for the nuts to tighten too. The nuts are small enough that they would start to come through the vent holes, so the metal shim adds more surface area between the rail and nut (on the inside of the rail).

MK2 and loving it. This is the first free float rail I've owned and I can't get over how easy it was to install and how rock solid it is. Initially I planned on going with a tube style rail, but the more I thought about how I like to hold the rifle and the more I looked at that bombproof mounting system, the more I realized there was only one way to go.
The upper started out as a rebarrel project for my 6721 with a 16" Colt SOCOM barrel. I already had a spare bolt carrier so obviously at that point it only made sense to just build a complete upper. Just waiting on a demiled carry handle that I bought off gunbroker that I'll chop into a rear BUIS.

Sweet rifles guys.....and I agree, the barrel nut design and it's ferrari type tolerances are at the very core of what makes the SMR rails very unique. That said, the aesthetics of them are really unmatched imho. They are beautiful rails that incorporate the cutting edge of rail design, and do it in a bombproof package.

The whole slick/tubular rail movement was great when a lot of quad rails were heavy and sharp, and the X300 at 12:00 on a rifle length rail was popular. It was clean, slick and easy to run.
Now it seems like most of the guys with the tube rails clutter 'em up with just as much junk as they could fit on a quad rail. The keymod does not do anything that the 1913 rails don't do better.

Yeah, people hang all sorts of things off of their rails but, that just means those guys are retarded, not the rail.
Quads have their place but most people don't need grenade launchers, lasers, etc.

Spent an extra $45 for the aluminum barrel nut on the MK2.
Just curious, why spend an extra $45 on an aluminum barrel nut?

My humble submission. Received the SMR and ALG rails in Jan. Mounted on BCM uppers. A little variety. The 3x Nikon came with a rifle I bought. Not bad but not as useful to me as a 1-4x. It will probably be sold soon.

Can anyone verify whether the mk4's and mk3's are the same "brown" color. Thinking about a 13 or 15" mk3 for my SPR build. I ask because I love the color of my mk4 but not so much in my tan mk1
Their DDC color is a little differs.

10.3' barrel length, rail is 9.5"
Awesome, I've got a DDMK18 in NFA jail right now and have been debating a SMR MK2 9.5, good to see a pic of the same setup.
Doea anyone have any pics of mk4 10" midlength or 13" on a 20" rifle?

Just ordered a BCM middy with an SMR Mk2 and was wondering if Geissele was planning on making more attachments for the SMR family? They're pretty limited so far.
So Trident, get your hands on a MK8 yet?

Just when KeyMod seems to have flipped the industry on its head (and I remain an unmitigated fan of KeyMod)......
EDIT: This seems to address the issue of KeyMod not being able to be applied properly to polymer. Not a competitor to KeyMod, but more a Polymer compliment to it.

Thanks! The top is a Spike's 11.5" 5.56 barrel under a 13" SMR and the bottom is an 8" CMMG .300 blackout under a 9.5" SMR. Both are MK2's, have AIM V2 NIB bcg's, and both have Kak Industries' Slim Line Flash Cans on them. I couldn't wait anymore for the KX5 to come out and these do a great job at a fraction of the price. They probably won't last as long as a KX5 but by that time I'll just buy another at $35. Last time I brought the Flash Cans up though it started a thread war so hopefully this stays as a picture thread.
My humble submission, an early MK1

Just the stud and a nylon spacer. It screws into one of the threaded dog bone type backers that come with the rail through one of the screw holes. I stuck an allen wrench through the hole to tighten it.

Just put this together for a buddy. Put my irons on it to test fire then pulled them and handed it over to him for optics and the rest of his goodies. I like the upper so much I am going to put a clone together for myself. I can't believe a stainless barrel and 15 inch rail could feel so balanced/handy.
Sorry for the awful phone pic. I just snapped a couple quick before I gave it to him.
