I have a super-trick suppressor in the works that will reduce the OAL between about 2.5 and 5" vs. the pictured one (which is a regular 9" .308 model).

very cool zak, any range report yet?

Only had a couple afternoons to do load testing, but so far I have a subsonic 210gr load that cycles the action and will lock the bolt back. My 240gr load will cycle, but not lock the bolt back. The 125's shoot at 2050 fps with 17.0gr H110. I zeroed the subs @ 50 yards with a TA11, and the 125's impact 8 MOA higher.

I'm not familiar with the 300 Fireball. What is the parent case? Easy to reload?

It's a .221 fireball case.

can't you make those out of a .223 case as well?

one more Q...

how is that thing as a deer round? seems like you could load it to 7.62x39 ballistics... maybe hotter?

should i just start drinking the 6.8 SPC koolaid?

You can make it with .223 cases as well and load it to 7.62 Soviet ballistics but you need an adjustable gas block. Or so I hear.

how do you like the redding dies ? I'm looking to buy dies for my 300 whisper project.

The Redding dies are fine.

Seriously, don't overthink this. .223 can work as a good deer round with the right bullet selection. So can 6.8SPC, 6.5 Grendel, 300 Whisper/Fireball, 7.62x39, etc.

I built a Fireball because I wanted something short and suppressed. My 6.8SPC is 18" and is very long with a can on. A

cool..
i read up a little more on 300 whisper. i guess it was originally designed as a hard hitting high accuracy subsonic round. neat.

what bullet weights have you been using?

i've got a pretty hard hitting 75 grain load for .223 that should suffice for hunting.

See post #4.

WRT .223, the bullet composition and design is more important than the velocity or bullet weight. My choice for hunting with 223 would be th 70gr Barnes TSX.

I killed the biggest bear and blacktail of my life with a 300 Fireball using 165 gr Ballistic Tips out of a 10" barreled CZ527 with an AAC Cyclone.

The dear was at 20 yds, through both shoulders, the bear was at about 200 yds, through the lungs and spine. Both 1 shot kills.

Awesome Zak,

I just ordered 2 of the Noveske 300/221 Fireball barrels last week for two projects, Im glad Im not the only one who finds this caliber fantastic!

Do you need to modify your mags at all to fit 220-240 loads in them?

Also, did you get that barrel recently?

Zak Smith

Haven't had to so far..

Got the barrel just a couple weeks ago.

What's the dif between .300 Fireball and .300 Whisper?

I used a Whisper one year at Second Chance in the rifle competition, with SSK's suppressor. It was an unfair advantage because I could hear the impacts on steel as a hit confirmation and oh, how the 220's took the steel down as opposed to 5.56!

I don't know much about suppressors or how SSK's suppressors stack up to the brands that are more commonly bandied about in the AR / class III community, but I have to think they would be worth a look.....? Anybody had experience with them?

That is an interesting BC. As I understand it, part of what makes the auto carriers better is that they are heavier. What is the reason yours is so skeletonized?

Zak Smith

300FB is the non proprietary version of the 300 Whisper, and there might be some dimensional differences. I believe the 300FB has more generous proportions.

The Young low-mass bolt carrier is what I use for 3Gun to speed cycling, and it seemed like a good idea to run in this, since cycling with extremely low amounts of gas pressure is typically problematic. I also cut 3 coils off the op spring, but I am not sure if that was needed in the end or not.

Zak that build looks nice. What is the diameter of that suppressor? I have a 7.62SD and was trying to find a forearm that I could recess it into.

Zak Smith

Hi,

The 30P has a diameter of 1.5". The ID of the PRI tube is about 1.75". The only tricky part is that if you want to retain the PRI rail segments (I have them removed), you need to trip the screws' lengths back a thread or two to clear the suppressor.

Zak,
I am going to get a barrel from his next run. I am going to get some of the other components and was wondering if the barrel has M4 cuts or is a standard upper.

Zak Smith

Pretty sure it does.
