View Full Version : Your "Favorite" Horrible / Cheesy Film...

We all have at least one, in my case given my fondness of martial arts, sci fi and horror genres I have hundreds.

But perhaps the worst example of a movie I truly enjoy has to be "Iron Eagle" (1986). (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091278/?ref_=sr_1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/04/Iron_eagle.jpg

It's so horribly bad I'm not even sure where to start. The acting, the plot, the horribly contrived situations, the incredible suspension of belief required to simply watch it. The 80s were famous for "government cheese" and I think this is most of it.

But if I'm flipping channels I can easily get sucked into it and start rooting for Doug Masters as he takes on seasoned pilots and destroys enemy targets on his very first "outing", even if I actually think Jason Gedrick is one of the biggest goober actors of that decade (his amazing body of well known work speaks for itself).

Even talented actors like Louis Gossett Jr. manage to become little more than predicable caricatures. Perhaps the greatest actor in the film is David Suchet and his amazing ability to keep a straight face while playing Col. Akir Nakesh when uttering such powerful lines as "Attack them through the flames!"

And perhaps even worst of all, somebody felt the need to make "Iron Eagle II" which I thankfully have no memory of.

This film makes Red Dawn, War Games, Rocky IV and Top Gun seem like Citizen Kane in comparison. And yes I do have it on DVD.

:D

It is about a town that has a lottery. If you are drawn, you enter a deathmatch with the other lottery winners. It is actually pretty funny and cheesy.

Follow it up with "Gymkata" (1985) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089243/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) for the ultimate double feature.

You will need nachos. Lots and lots of nachos.

Just gonna warn you now, Gymkata can be hard to watch in parts, like MST3k bad. But it's one of those things you have to seeif you are an 80's movie fan, like Breaker, Breaker if you consider yourself a Chuck Norris fan or The Star Wars Christmas Special if you consider yourself a Star Wars fan. Thankfully it's not as bad as either of those things.

Ironically, I really like Kurt Thomas and he's pretty talented. And I think he tried his hardest to make this a good film. Problem is he seemed to be the only one really trying. You'll swear this is a Golan/Globus production.

I own it on VHS, it was during this special in which an animation short aired that introduced the world to my favorite Star Wars character, Boba Fett. But now just the animation short can be viewed via YouTube and is considered a "cult classic" unto itself.

Probably more than you ever wanted to know about it, plus Lucas's responses to the special are hilarious . . .

So as far as my favorite "cheesy movie", hmm off the top of my head it would be Tremors (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100814/).

It spawned two sequels, one prequel, and even a TV series (canceled after the first season).

Pretty much any movie made under the WWE flag and produced by Vince McMahon. The "Marine" with John Cena tops that list. More or less an 80s action flick without Sly or Arnold. Lots of explosions, hot women, extreme gun fighting scenes with the magazines that never need changed but far short on plot. Enjoyable in a "It's 1 AM and I can either watch this or infomercials about the worlds strongest vacuum cleaner" way.

And as a kid, I thought "Space Camp" rocked, although pretty cheesy as I got older. Still enjoyed it though.

Any of the James Bond flicks with Timothy Dalton. Cheesy, but it's still Bond and the world got introduced to Talisa Soto so there is some merit there.

And not sure if the OP knows it or not, but they did make an "Iron Eagle 3" lol

Does TV count?
Horribly cheesy? Anyone who can remember 1978 has to have seen that gem "KISS meets the phantom of the park". Talk about hard to get through? The only thing worse than the acting is... well, there just isn't much worse than that.

"Night of the Living Dead" the original black and white version. The acting really isn't very good (other than the zombies) and the editing wasn't done very well, there is a scene that has 2 takes in it.

"Tremors" is a close second for me though.

Dang it!! When I saw the title of this thread, this was the first movie I thought of. In fact, I liked this movie so much, I have Queen's "One Vision" on my MP3 player still to this day. Now I'll have to rack my brain to think up another one.

I was also a big fan of the "Lost Boys" but I can't remember if it was cheesy or not.

1941.

Critics panned it, it had moderate success at the box office, Kubrick thought it should have been a drama, John Wayne thought it should not be made.

BUT...all-star cast, great music (John Williams score), directed by Spielberg. And Nancy Allen was HOT.

http://img.movieberry.com/static/photos/91990/poster.jpg

Starts with a 10 minute gun battle in a Hong Kong teahouse. Later has an 20 minute gun battle among gunrunners at a warehouse. Ends with a 42 minute running gun battle through a hospital, in which EVERY SWAT officer in CHINA is eventually killed. :p

Come to think of it, I think there were a few "plot" points in it somewhere that didn't involved gunfire, yet the movie is less than 2 hours long! I think THAT'S the more AMAZING detail!

p.s. - and most of these gun battles are with Tokarevs that DON'T jam!

Probably Russ Meyers finest hour (not that that is saying much). Cynthia Myers, Dolly Reed, Erica Gavin and Edy Williams. Lots and lots of eye candy, unfortunately it's packaged in some of the wost 60s weirdness that you can imagine.

I remember some schlockfest from years ago called "The Frozen Dead" or something. It was about Nazis reanimating body parts. This was at least a decade or so before "Reanimator". They had arms and legs hanging from the walls, and if people got too close to the wall an arm would grab them or something. Hell of a secret weapon: just stay away from the mother****ing wall.

Anyway, some chick's severed head was hooked up on a table so she could talk and whatnot.

Okay, I gotta add one here.

I don't think anyone's already mentioned it.

I had forgotten about "Phantom of the Paradise."

When I was a kid, this was "one of those movies" that the parents wouldn't let me see. I made the mistake of showing them the photos from the movie novelization and one showed Gerritt Graham's character with curlers in his hair. That pretty much cinched it for the son of Conservative Southern Baptists that I was not going to that movie.

Anyway, I saw most of it on TV years later. It's cheesy, improbable, and the music is about as wretched as The Rocky Horror Picture Show's songs.

Still, seeing Paul Williams with his face melted at the end somehow makes it worthwhile...

Just one? Off the top maybe OSS117: Lost In Rio

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/70124816

When outrageously chauvinistic French secret agent OSS 117 (Jean Dujardin) journeys to Cold War-era Rio de Janeiro to recover a top-secret microfilm, gorgeous Israeli Nazi-hunter Dolorès Koulechov (Louise Monot) joins in the quest. But as the pair zero in on their quarry, the hapless Frenchman's disdain for Koulechov's gender and nationality threaten their mission. Michel Hazanavicius directs this delightful parody of James Bond-esque films.

Little Otik defines odd.

http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/Little-Otik/60025313

In this bizarre fantasy from the Czech Republic, an ordinary couple, Karel and Bozena, are unable to conceive a child. When Karel digs up a tree root and whittles something vaguely resembling a human baby, Bozena's strong maternal longings transform the stump into a living creature ... with a monstrous appetite that can't be met by baby's formula!

Movies that were cheesy bad, but I still loved watching them-

At the very top of the list is Godzilla. I loved watching the rubber mutant dinosaur knocking over buildings, destroying elevated trains, snapping high tension wires in a shower of sparks, bludgeoning it's way through the miniaturized Tokyo set to stomp all those cool little model tanks and swat plastic fighter jets dangling from strings. Heck, I'm a sucker for just about any of the classic Japanese Monster Movies. We'd get up and watch them with Dad almost every Saturday. "Urban Renewal" we called it.

Another is The Little Shop of Horrors. Not the remake, but the original black & white version starring Bob Denver. "Feed me! I want some chow!"

Another train wreck I really enjoyed is The Gamers: Dorkness Rising because I get the jokes. Really.

"If we use a Fireball, we'll get caught in the blast."
"Not if we hide behind the large pile of dead bards"

Not that I've ever played D&D or anything like that- Did you know that "Dork" really means whale penis? It does! Well, it did at my grade school. We used it sometimes instead of "dick". That's why the first time I heard it used in a kid's show, I was shocked. You did not want to be a dork or a nerd when I was growing up. Now, it's the nerds who make all the money

Lot of fun ones listed in the zombie posts.

Not strollin all the way back to 2013 to read the whole thread, but if "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" ain't on the list it should be. Of course only in a theater, preferably a midnight movie, with full audience participation by a crowd that knows what's up.

Evil Dead II

Much as I love Bridgette Wilson, Mortal Kombat is a difficult film to sit through. In fairness it was based on a video game and made for kids but still, pretty rough.

Ironically Evil Dead II kick that crap out of the original Evil Dead which would have been completely forgotten if not for the sequel. I remember watching that on VHS and having it run my stress o meter, was funny later but damn that first viewing.

Jackie Chan can be it's own thread, but my personal favorite is The Big Brawl (aka Battle Creek Brawl) from 1980. Not only was it one of my first Jackie Chan films (thank you cable tv) it had some of the highest production values for any Chan film up to that time. Also was a very early onscreen appearance of balisong (butterfly) knives. The fight choreography was absolutely tight.

Excellent film and a nice Dan Inosanto role for those who know who he is. Fun story, Dan wasn't sure he was big enough to play a heavy for the film but Burt was intrigued by the fact that Dan was a Bruce Lee protege. Without giving it a lot of thought, Reynolds picked up a stick and improvised a sneak attack which resulted in Dan pasting him to a wall with a straight punch to the chest. Figuring he had absolutely blown the audition Dan started packing up but to his credit Burt hired him on the spot after deciding he could easily sell anything action wise.

And also another early film appearance of a balisong knife and Rachel Woods probably never looked better.

Iron Eagle and the even more horrible Fire Birds had to happen because once the Chair Farce and Big Green Machine saw how the Navy cashed in on Top Gun they had to have their own versions. (Admittedly, the Air Force dropped out after seeing the script, resulting in Iron Eagle getting Golan-Globused with production assistance from the IAF.)

Evil Dead II managed to be simultaneously scary and funny better than any other film I can think of. If you know of others please share.

I watched a ton of Jackie Chan films years ago and enjoyed most of them. They kind of to blend together now and I cannot pick favorites. I think Drunken Master (1978) was a good one.

Okay, so I guess I'm the only one in these parts who actually thought this was a good film at least artistically speaking? I always thought it was a great example of an homage.

I loved it. Loved it even more when I later saw some of the films it borrows from.

At least... we got... ...Terre Haute, India... na.

Reinemachefrau.....

I still watch "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" on DVD occasionally. First saw it when it was in theaters, loved it then. Everyone I've ever watched it with has absolutely hated it.

Agree w/Steyr, seeing the original movies that it takes clips from makes it even better. Kindled my interest is old movies. My wife hates it when we're watching and old movie and I point out the clips that are in Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.

When I saw the film, I had seen enough of them like White Heat to get most of the jokes. But later on as a devoted TCM fan I eventually saw all of them and it made me like "Dead Men" that much more. It really is a completely brilliant film.

Seriously, The Best of the Best might be one of the worst 10 martial arts films and that's impressive. So much wrong with that movie it's hard to know where to start. Half of the competitors aren't even actual martial artists and seeing them wear black belts is worse than seeing 12 year old kids with black belts. So much shockingly incorrect information it's astonishing.

Bloodsport would be a lot of fun if there really wasn't a Marine who was kicked out on a mental who tries to convince people all that shit really happened. And yes his name is Frank Dux and he is one of the most deluded, living in a complete fantasy world people you have ever met. But the movie was actually pretty good before I found out that somebody actually believes it's their life story.

Re Highlander, OMGWTFCringe, but some good came of it... my mother was annoyingly obsessed with the Highlander franchise, and H2 was my "gateway drug" introduction to Shakespeare.

Nothing wrong with A Team for kids, hell that is who the show was made for. Adult military guess wouldn't be able to watch it for 10 seconds. But kids...hell yeah. And that was back when the world was still presented in terms of right and wrong, of justice and injustice vs the bizarro crap they feed to kids today.

While we are at it "Greatest American Hero." I was in high school and got sucked into that one even with all the goofy plot contrivances. If I'm not careful I'll still get that damn theme song stuck in my head for hours. Robert Culp as the FBI guy was also awesome and it also presented a great message for kids...and some high school age kids. Connie Sellecca was also easy on the eyes back then.

Knight Rider still has one of the most amazing theme songs, even to the point that Busta Rhymes sampled it. That thing is almost Kraftwerk. Anything David Hasselhof is a maybe but I somehow managed to get through it and Baywatch. And even with Knight Rider, Rebecca Holden was pretty interesting.

She's aged way better than Patricia McPherson who she pinch-hit for in Season 2... come to think of it, she and KITT (with a little help from conversion-kitter Don Colie) have aged better than the entire rest of that show, though I still have Stu Phillips's scores in my MP3 library.
