View Full Version : Magazine seating problems on an SR-15

I'm hoping for a bit of help here with an small issue with my SR-15....

I've been having some issues with seating magazines on my SR-15, particularly on a closed bolt, and I am wondering if:

1) There is an easy fix for this
2) It falls withing my limited mechanical abilities to effect this fix without getting a smith involved.

A bit more on the problem:

I was using gen1 pmags without a single issue, on a static range, punching paper and banging the steel gong out on the berm. Then I took a class and we were working on reloads, and everything went to shit. I mean I was trying all kinds of technique to seat the mags and nothing would work. Sometimes I'd get the audible click and positive 'push/pull' that the mag seated, fire a round, and the mag would dump right out.

The instructor thought I was just limp wristing my reloads, but he checked it out and said something was fubar with the rifle. A buddy I was in class with gave me some aluminum GI mags (forget the make) and it went a lot better and the problem seemed to be cured. So I got a bunch of GI mags (D&H) and have been using them without issue. Only now, they won't properly seat reliably, especially on a closed bolt.

I recently bought some gen3 pmags after hearing that the mag catch was a bit different. So I tried them out at the house and they appear to be working well. After inserting the mag, I get a real positive 'click' after applying just a bit more pressure....and I can see and feel the catch working.

I don't think that my rifle being so finicky about magazines is acceptable, so I'm finally motivating to get this fixed. I figured writing up a post would be a good first step.

I'm wondering if it may be a spring issue, or something needs to be filed down a bit? I'm sure someone has had a situation like this, and hopefully they can share some advice. Thanks for reading, and obligatory pics follow below.

I would contact KAC before you do any filing or have a 'smith work on it. Could be something with the ambi mag release, but I can't see the pictures using the network I'm on.

Are you loading them to full capacity? Ie 30 rounds? Have you tried downloading to 28? Are you doing a push pull technique to ensure they are properly seated?
Full mags on closed bolt can be difficult to seat correctly. I have heard the click before several times, but it doesn't mean it fully seated. That's where the push pull technique helps to ensure it fully seated
