First, what happens when you accept a Friend Request from another member? What are the benefits and what are the down sides?

Second, what is a Referral? How do you get one and what does it mean? Who gives them?

It depends on how the software is set up and modified.

some possibilities.
Restrict threads to "friends only"
PM from "friends only"
Linking to other social media
Friends lists to mass PM or email

Whatever else someone might write code for and place in the software.

On my site I have a widget that shows your friends posts in a box so you don't have to hunt them up. I don't see that here.
