View Full Version : Legal Overall Length of Shotgun
I bought a cheap shotgun over the weekend to cut down to put in my car. I know the barrel has to be 18", but what overall length does it have to be? I heard 26", but I wanted to see if anyone else knew anything about it.

I think you are right, 26" oal is what i have been told also.I am in Texas, but i think that's Fed. Regs.
Neither of these are conclusive enough for you to break a saw out - you should find out your states' specific laws first and find the fedederal law in print as well.

From link above:
Id. § 921(a)(5). As used in section 924(c)(1)(B)(i), the statute defines a "short-barreled shotgun" as:
a shotgun having one or more barrels less than eighteen inches in length and any weapon made from a shotgun (whether by alteration, modification or otherwise) if such a weapon as modified has an overall length of less than twenty-six inches.
