I have a project and search (here and elsewhere) is not getting the results I'm looking for.

Ruger MKII blued with target thumb rest grips and a very sharp hooked front blade sight. As is, the gun has a short bull barrel and would has the potential for all around use, but is currently configured for target shooting and not so much for carrying into the woods. I'm looking to make it a woods carry gun so need recommendations for:

- plain, durable replacement grips, preferably wood/aluminum. Thumb rest detracts from carry. Could just file down the thumb rest, but that would bubba the looks up and someone may want these grips as they are. I've found a few options on line, but generally, these are either maintain a thumb rest, add finger grooves (I don't like) or checkering (I'd prefer just plain non-checkered grips)

- replacement sights. Low profile good for carry not so much for target and fiber optic is a non-starter. Haven't found a brass bead/tritium/black option

- recommendations for potential refinish to something requiring less care and won't require continued reapplication. Good low maintenance finish.

- Good quality carry holster

- Other suggestions

Thanks for your inputs in advance.

Save yourself some time and money. Sell what you have and buy one of these. http://www.ruger.com/products/2245DE/specSheets/10138.html

That looks like a nice option when they become available, but I'm not finding them on line (out of stock). In the meantime, I'm trying to avoid losing out on this MKII as I bought it new, it is no longer produced, it is very accurate and reliable, and around here, you'd be giving it away. Also, as I understand it, the MKIII (and possibly this model, but I can't find info on it) has a chamber indicator, mag safety, and other features I don't care for. Will have to research on this one when I can find it.

I have had the Hogue rubber wrap-around grip with finger grooves on my MKII for about 15 years. The grooves fits my hand perfectly, but everyone is different. I think the factory sights are fine.

Edit: As far as refinishing, cerakote.

I have not yet ordered one of the Speed strip kits from the above link but after one or two more exercises in frustration I probably will.

I second the Hogue grips. I have them on two Mark II's and love them. Tactical Solutions sells a front sight I also like a lot. It eliminates the hook and makes for a nice sight picture. I use the stock adjustable rear sight. Here's a link to the front sight:

Thanks Stan. This looks perfect. So, this will be high enough to work with the existing adjustable rear and not adversely affect point of aim/point of impact? Always thought the hook will get caught on something when I don't want it to and play hell on the holster. Thanks again.

It works perfectly with the rear sight. Didn't even have to adjust the elevation when I installed them.

I have four Ruger MK II's in different configurations, and barrel lengths. I carry one of my 5.5 inch bull barrel Target Models with Hogue, wood, thumb rest grips and original sights in a Triple K, leather holster designed for this pistol. It works great, although I have been thinking about replacing the front sight with the one above.

The only other thing I would do is just switch back to the original grips, but so far the thumb rest grips have not been an issue, but YMMV.

Perfect. Just ordered this front sight. Thanks for the recommendation.

I don't own one anymore, but if I bought another one i would give the majestic arms speed strip kit a go as the only thing not to like about these guns is the insane dissasembly/reassembly.

Anyone have experience with those?
