We had a good system - I picked the wild blackberries in the backyard, she held the bucket and ate the blackberries.

My own daughter is all grown up now, and far more likely to pilfer my hardball stash than my blackberry bucket, but these are the moments that truly complete a man's life.

Cutest little helper ever. Savor every moment ... even if it costs you a few berries along the way. ;)

Just hoping to save some blackberries for Grandpa's visit on the weekend of the 4th :D It would make my week to see the two of them picking blackberries together.

Nice! Thanks for posting those pics. And if the cobbler tasted half as good as it looks, it must have been delicious.

What an adorable picture!

I love wild blackberries. However, down here, wild blackberries are guarded by a horde of chiggers.

Hopefully you stayed out of the chiggers, if not, we will know why you are typing funny.

:D

Happily, no chiggers or ticks.

Absolutely adorable pics! My berries are full on the bushes, sadly I do not have such a cute helper but my yellow lab Autumn is eager for berry picking time.

Very nice.

Just had my 2nd daughter come into the world Thursday.
Wouldn't trade fatherhood for anything.

Speaking of wealth redistribution...
Where's this recipe for the cobbler?

Homemade cobbler with the kids, that's pretty awesome! You need a ice cream freezer, and homemade vanilla bean ice cream to go with it.

Brain freeze makes it a perfect day. :D

She's a cutie. Savor every moment with them.

If that aint pure beauty & sweetness personified..I don't know what is.
Ive written here before how I, as young un, would walk about 2 hours or so to my grandmothers house, after picking blackberries, and after getting there, in just a little while, would have one of her
blackberry cobblers. Great memories. Thanks for the pics and reminder.

I have fond memories of picking berries along the side of my house when I was a kid. Mom would always talk of making preserves out of them, but the birds would savage the berry patch before I could get very many. So I took my machete and hollowed it out into my own little fortress. I was able to get a decent amount of berries from inside. Too bad they never seemed to last long enough to get back to Mom.

Thanks for bringing back the memories, LL, I haven't thought about those berries in a long time.

They are good buddies. She plays on top of him, walks him, feeds him when we are not looking, and even puts stickers on his head :D

:D

My dad used to have an old bird dog when I was that age.

I used to put dirt in his ears, in his mouth, bury him in the sand pile, attach stuff to him all kinds of annoying things. He would just calmly take it until he got tired of me and then go lay down right out of my reach in the woods and watch me.

He wouldn't let me leave the back yard and he wouldn't let anyone near me other than close family.

All kids should have a dog like that.

Yes sir. What beautiful children! The dog ain't bad either.

Being obsessive about child safety, I flat out just can't keep from asking. What about venomous snakes in that cool and shaded black berry patch or in the semi-wooded area with the logs and fallen tree branches?

One of my fears is being bit by a rattler in my yard, carport, or driveway--like at night when these critters are active.

Where I grew up, we had rattlesnakes, cotton mouths, copperheads, and coral snakes all of which contributed to my snake-o-phobia.

Littlelebowski
06-26-13, 13:53
Willie, lots less snakes here but I think you might have a bit of a healthy phobia. I have grown up with snakes and don't worry much about them.

I've seen more bear scat in my yard than snakes.
