I'm picking up an Encore in 7-08 this week. Is there anything I need to know about them?

I have one that is probably 6-7 years old in 22-250 that my dad willed me a few years ago.

It wears a 4 power fixed Leupold scope.

I have had it out to the range a few times...the thing is very accurate. With Federal Premiums I was getting nickel and dime sized groups with no trouble at all. That was from the 100yd range....going out to 200 maybe opened up those groups by 1/2" or so. I was shooting it from my Harris Bi-pod.

Not a "scientific" test of anything but the sucker seems pretty accurate and is a joy to shoot. It might become my new coyote/varmint gun...who knows?

I have shot a few borrowed "Contender" type break open Thompsons in the past and had similar results. Accurate, straight forward and seem to be pretty high quality guns.

Enjoy it...

I've got one with 30.06 and 300 win barrels. The 300 needs to be ported if you'll be firing 20 or more rounds:D The 30.06 is not bad, to me. It shoots better than I can with both barrels. Locktite the scope base and rings, if not it will move/ come loose. Use good scope rings. I had wanted one for over 20 years before I broke down and got mine, after getting good deal on a bunch of 30.06 ammo.

I have one in .30-06 as well. I bought for a bear hunt that I have not yet been able to take a trip for yet.... :(

It is a very accurate rifle that is fun to shoot. Mine wears a 3-9x40 scope with this scope mount...LINK (http://ads.midwayusa.com/product/564311/talley-lightweight-1-piece-scope-mounts-with-integral-30mm-rings-thompson-center-encore-omega-triumph-matte-medium).

You'll be fine. Just don't use the scope as a lever to open & close the action like one gunwriter does on TV !!

I dig mine, it is an older pre-prohunter. Looking at getting a 280AI for my next barrel.

I got it. Came with both wood and synthetic stocks. Great feel and the trigger is pretty good. How much are barrels on average?

2-3 bills for a standard barrel depending on caliber, material and other options. A custom one can run up to 6 bills. Note Bergara barrel are made in Spain, Ed Shilen of Shilen Barrels was their technical consultant. I have not tried them out yet but they are suppose to be top notch. Here are a few sources.

Thanks. I'm thinking of getting a 308 barrel just because I already reload for it and its easier to find than 708. Also thinking of something bigger like 338 WM or 375 H&H and a good coyote round like 22-250.

I may be off here so check it out for yourself but I think the Encore, as versatile as it is and while available, was never intended to use the heavy hitters, I think 300WM in the cut-off point. I did look into it briefly because I was semi-interest in possible African dangerous game round such as 375 H&H or 458 Lott but my research deterred me. Again, this is reaching way back in the memory banks so do not take my word for it, but honestly the Encore is just that, a major research project.

My thoughts from the git-go is the Encore is an opportunity to check out rounds I typically would not have dealt with, I could spend $200-300 on a barrel as opposed to $600-700+ on a rifle to experiment. If I didn’t care for the round I’d just sell the barrel and move on to the next or if the round died on the tree I could just use the barrel for a bitch beater or jack handle and still have the rifle (re-chambering is always an option too).

I am, of course, into my ARs and AKs for fight arms, but I love the Encore and consider it a great learning opportunity, in that respect it is my favorite firearm. On that note, if you do not own a copy of Ken Water’s “Pet Loads” get one. Even if you are not a reloader there is straight-up bookoo info in that book on a hell of lot of rounds. It and the Encore go hand-in hand IMO.

Also regarding the 7mm-08, it is flat out a bad-ass round, especially if you are a reloader. Check it out.
Here’s a start, but only a start:

Again, enjoy. If you are a reloader, hunter and serious firearm enthusiast you will soon discover there are few, if any, firearms that are in the same class as the Encore. It is truly a fun, educational firearm. Black Powder is in the near future for me, I am looking forward to it.

One of my shooting buds has an encore with a couple barrels. The 223 barrel with his reloads puts 5 shots in a ragged hole! I wish I had the ability shoot like that!

I would suggest getting a 50 Blackpowder barrel and a 22lr and a trigger job. If should make a great single shot.

Please share how you like the 7-08 on your Encore. I am very interested in buying a barrel.

Good information on Encore accuracy can be found on Mike Bellm's website. He also sends out email tips.

I SBR my Encore so I can use pistol barrels with the stock. Normally I shoot .243 on mine. Currently has a 10" MGM .300 black installed and a Trijicon 1x4 green triangle on post scope.
