View Full Version : Tired of the knob on the Aimpoint QRP mount?

The thing bothered me. Yet, I can't stomach the thought of blowing $100 plus on a new mount. I figured I would just wait for a deal to pop up on a used one, but until then:

Materials were free and all part of the original mount. The free tip of the day is the end of the obnoxious knob is plastic and will pop off. Remove the staking and disassemble. Cut the threads down and reuse the nut and washer supplied.

All that crap is already inside the knob, Jackson???

I might do this. Good work.

I was glad the nut was in there. Aimpoint used some crazy fine thread pitch. Basically I wasn't about to find a nut down at the local hardware store.

This also allows an acceptable amount torque to be placed on the mount. Only down side is you need an 8mm wrench.

Outstanding.

I have a weekend project. :)

Also, heads up, the washer and nut aren't painted.

I used a semi-flat engine enamel and then baked them.

More details... do you just back the twisty off all the way??

No, the end of the knurled knob is a plastic cap. Pop it off. Under there you'll find the 8mm nut, washer, and spring. You can either lightly grind the staking off, or just take an 8mm socket and loosen(its possible you could mess the threads up on the nut). Then the toothed part of the knob can turn off.

I'm sure if you tried to twist the whole knob off you'd create a "double nut situation" and start screwin stuff up.

I didn't think it hurt to put a drop of lock-tite on the threads either.

I can also loosen the nut out to the end of the threads and there is enough room to pop the optic off.

I don't see it coming off often and I can use my irons just fine through the tube, so I don't miss a QD mount too much.

Either way, cast these blimeys to the depths of the parts bin!

Thanks for posting this. I put this out to a bunch of guys running LESO M2s and mounts.

That thing looks so annoying, I have a PRO in the mail so I might end up trying this.

Thanks for the tip, it seems that it you are just taking it apart and using just the washer and nut. Would you be able to put it back to original with no problems?

Cool mod! I think the trade off of losing the ability to QD your optic wouldn't be worth the trade off to me, but i bet a lot of people do this

Well, I over tightened the 8mm nut and it didn't take much. :fie: Now I see why the ACO nut is so long. So I improvised and reversed the ratchet nut, unfortunately it needs a tool to tighten it. I will have to see if I can order the ACO nut and cross bolt.

This is quite interesting. What happened to the original photos?

I am also interested in the original photos. I actually prefer the qrp2 mount. I just don't like how it lossens up after a range session. I was thinking of epoxying the two racheting pieces together.
