Greetings to all. I'm a "nubie" to the forum and to the AR platform. Recently purchased a DDM4 with the QD swivel attachment located in the rear receiver and I want to run a single point sling. My question... Is a QD swivel enough to hold a single point sling for tactical training? If so, Is there a heavy duty QD swivel on the market that would do the job the best?
Much Thanks!

I do not run a single point, but a two point. I also have not taken a class, but have had my sling in "hard use" in the desert up in the mountains. The QD swivels have not broke nor do I think they will any time soon.

FWIW the rear is a LaRue I believe, or a MI- the one that comes with their sling attachment. I do not know which is which, but they work.

A QD swivel will work for a single point sling, however, you should really look into using a 2 point.

Thanks guys. I was thinking a single point because it seems easier to transition from right to left and back. As a nubie I am open to ideas on slings. Also, do you know of any high quality QD swivels?

I've purchased swivels from Brownells & have been happy with them. Browse around here & watch Larry's video. There's also all sorts of info listed, including mounts & swivels.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

I don't know about the best, but I know the best deal around. Vltor 1.25" heavy duty QD swivels from Riflegear for $8 each. They're the only ones I buy.

I used to run a single point for the same reason you stated (ease of switching from right to left shoulders). Im an ambidextrous rifle shooter and many instructors points of, "switching shoulders is not important because it happens very rarely in combat." didnt sit well with me.

However, it is very possible to set up a TWO point sling in a manner that enables you to just as easily (if not more easily) switch shoulders. In these cases you get the best of both worlds. The two ways to do this is to mount a 2 point with the points being close together (Receiver end plate and rear on the for-end). Or mounting the rear point on the FAR side of the buttstock so that the gun is within the sling loop. This method is the fastest because you do not need to lift the buttstock up and over your single point. You can just move it over.

Once I discovered these truths I realized that the single-points had very little use. As far as two points go, Vickers is da bomb.

Get an IWC 2-to-1 point triglide? (http://www.impactweaponscomponents.com/product/2-to-1-point-triglide-threads-into-your-sling-and-makes-it-convertible/)

Have the best of both worlds. Or at least see which method you like best.

Personally I run two point like everyone else here. You only have to nut yourself with your rifle once during a transition to see the upside.

Hope this helps.

Edit: oh yeah, you were asking about heavy duty QD s weren't you? (http://www.impactweaponscomponents.com/product/lmt-heavy-duty-push-button-qd-swivel/)

I've used DD, Viltor, and Troy with no quality issues. I run a two point for work (In my opinion it is far superior to a single point), and have never had a qd come loose. If you run a loose two point shoulder transitions are fast and there is no need to adjust the sling for support side transitions.

Could you post a link to this product? I don't see it on riflegears site or using their search.

He must have gotten it on sale, because this is the closest at that size and brand (http://www.riflegear.com/p-481-vltor-quick-detach-sling-swivel.aspx)

I have a DD rifle as well, and I like the GG&G enhanced QD swivel (with the somewhat teardrop shaped attachment point). I don't know what it would take for it to fail, it is a very robust piece of equipment.

I've had luck with the ones from MI, BFG, and Vltor. Heck, I'd bet they are all made by the same manufacturer.

I run several Vltors on a couple guns.

Also agree on 2 point vs. single point. I also bought into the "easier to transition" aspect of a single point. Know how many times I have "transitioned to my weak side"? Not enough to care how easy it is vs. how much a pain in the neck a single point sling is.

With the Vickers slings you just release the tension on them and then you have plenty of room to transition to the weak side. On mine at least there is enough slack to be able to do this, but I am also not a big guy. If you happen to be a big guy you might not have as much slack in the sling and have to take your arm out.

When I built my rifle I used the Noveske QD end plate. I the placed an order with IWC for a sling and attachments.

The two-in-one lets you use the sling as a single point. I can see using the single point system if you are standing still or never need to let go of the weapon and move. The two point allows you to stabilize the weapon against your body so you can go hands free. I'm sure I'm very short of info on the single point sling, but that is my impression.

I also have a DDM5 running a single pt sling (MS3). I also run a RSA so I can run the same sling as a 2 pt. Works well for me right now but have a carbine class the end of Sept so I will see how I like it.
