Could you (in theory of course) use an 8620 bolt on a rifle where it wouldn't be advisable on a carbine or shorter gas system? i.e. are the stresses on a bolt less with a rifle?

I wouldn't use anything less than 9310 in any length of gas system.

Eh, I don't think there's any reason to use substandard parts for any application when proper ones aren't that much more expensive.
