View Full Version : Walmart find, trouble deciding.

First off, it's been a very very long time since I have posted on this forum since I can find the answer to almost every question that I have using the search function. But here is my dilemma.

I was just about to buy a friends "NIB" S&W M&P15TS (14.5 inch barrel) for $1,250.00 but when I was in Walmart today I saw a Colt LE6920 SOCOM in the cage listed for $1,467.

So what would you all do. Buy the lesser expensive S&W or go for the Colt?

BTW: It will be mostly used for target use, Coyote and other varmints and I do plan on enrolling in a class or 2 since my Army training from the late 80s and early 90s is getting a bit rusty.

Thoughts?

Colt all the way.
you might be able to get the regular 6920 m4 for $1200 or less if you look around

I would get the SOCOM, without a doubt.

+1.The SOCOM is nice, but you should be able to find a regular 6920 for about 1,100.Then get an Aimpoint PRO and Larue mount for a little more money than the SOCOM. But if you can't wait and money isn't a problem, get the SOCOM. It's a fine rifle.

Colt. I think the extra couple hundred nets you more.

Buy the Colt and don't look back. It will do everything you want it to and then some.

For the price of a SOCOM you can get yourself a nice lightweight DD or LW BCM and get either in middy if you prefer that (I could care less carbine vs. mid length), so I'd hold out.

I'm with you on this. Colts are nice, but at that price the DD is a better option IMHO.

Don't bother with the m&p! I own the Colt M4A1 Socom. Hell of a long gun, I just surpassed 10K rounds with no problems. I replaced the gas rings at 7K rounds for regular maintenance, other than that everything has held together as expected...get the Pony.

If you have an itch you need to scratch, go for the Colt, otherwise, I'd get the BCM limited run middy from Grant. https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=134126

Ya that's a very good option as well. I'd pass just because I'd rather have a 16 inch barrel, but that's just personal preference. Centurion rail on a BCM is a definite winner, and it's a good price.

Posted a similar question over on Lightfighter.net. Consensus was to go for the Colt or BCM over anything else. Ended up with a 6920MP - very happy.

I like my 15T, love the 6920 MP.

I didn't know Grant had that BCM RECCE 14 Mod 0 in FDE. That's a nice price. Good thing I'm working 12 hours tonight, gives me time to think about this.....

Get the Colt. I bought a SOCOM from them a couple weeks ago and love it. Sold an unfired 6920 to fund it as I wanted the heavy M4A1 barrel.

Not a fan of that boat anchor barrel on the SOCOM. If you're doing high volume stuff, sure, but the 6920 is better, and 6720 is still best in my mind. That SOCOM is a better value than the M&P, but if you're patient you can get a really top end setup for that cash:

Colt 6920; Centurion FSP C4 Handguard puts you just under 1400
DD V1 or V5 LW Carbine should be around that $1500 price point.
Pretty much any BCM upper in a configuration you like on basically any highly recommended lower (e.g. when G&R had the BCM Blem lowers for a couple bills and a song).

Wait for the correct rifle, it's absolutely worth it. The 6920 is absolutely my suggestion still, as the price different sets you up with a quality rail system up front (Centurion C4 if you're willing to dremel off some things; KAC RAS/Troy MRF-DI/DD Omega 7 otherwise), and some cash leftover to buy magazines, ammunition, or towards an optic.

EDIT: POLYMORPHEUS wins the thread. That V5 Middy w/ PRO is hands down the best value out there right now. No clue why it's in stock still. Not sure what sorcery is afoot, but that's a deal.

Colt over the M&P but if you have time shop around $1400+ you can get lots of rifles for that price. I'm also a DD fan. I also agree with the lighter option.

I picked a DDM4V1 LW up for $1334 back in may, could have picked up a V5 for a little less (like $1,290), but I agree the DDM4V5 LW w/ the PRO is a great value, the caveat is you get the PRO. Honestly, nothing wrong with the PRO, best value optic on the market, but I prefer the micros, stick with the lightweight theme.

I was about to suggest the DD for the same/similar money. Better gun than the Colt IMO. I would rather buy the basic 6920 and mod to my likings compared to the SOCOM. I do like the SOCOM rollmark though.

Buy the Colt. It will hold it's value. I like the SOCOM.

Of the two, I would buy the Colt. If I was opening up the criteria a bit at a similar price point, I would probably buy this: http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=MID-750-C

That does look good but being just a bit beyond the price envelope, I might have to sell my Browning Citori 20 gauge to keep my wife happy. And that baby is as old as I am.

A buddy of mine just got the SOCOM from WalMart and is extremely happy with it.

The thing is a tac driver for an off the shelf gun.

And like said, it will hold its value well.

I'd go that route.

Just remember, the SOCOM for $1467 will have sales tax, while depending on how your state's FFLs handle transfers, there may be no tax and just a transfer fee on the DD from G & R.

The M&P15TS is a cool setup, and the SOCOM is arguably a better gun, but I'd take a DD over either, definitely.

Walmart also includes the NICS check in the price of the gun, which is nice.

Get the BCM Recce. A BCM middy with a Gunfighter Charging Handle, Gun Fighter Grip, Gunfighter Comp plus a Centurion rail. That is a sweet deal.

Ah yes but no sights. You could option in the Magpul plastic BUIS for about $80 more but I'm not sure on how rugged or accurate they might be. I could always get some nice irons for it but that would set me back another couple bills.

To make matters worse, G&R now has BCM 16 M4 Mod 2s in stock for $1,332. http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=M4-650-133 Looks very similar to the Colt SOCOM setup with some nice features.

Just when I thought it was getting narrowed down by kicking the S&W to the curb.

So I guess I am down to

Colt SOCOM
BCM RECCE 14.5 MOD 0
BCM 16 M4 Carbine MOD 2

I just hope they don't sell out before I decide.

Buy a Colt 6920 from G and R Tactical, a site sponsor. $1,155 plus shipping: http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=6920

The SOCOM's extra cost over the 6920 is due to accessories you may end up replacing anyway.

Give Grant some love

"Colt LE 6920 (2013 Model). This is the latest LE 6920 to come out of Colt. It has the "LE" designator, Colt Defense markings, but doesn't have the "Restricted LE Only written on the receiver. The carry handle is now gone and replaced with a Magpul MBUS flip up rear sight.

Comes with ONE 30rd mag, manual and one QD swivel." (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=6920)

Yes I have. I just placed the order with G & R Tactical. I ordered the BCM RECCE 14.5 MOD 0 in FDE!

I decided that this gun was set up in such a way that it had almost everything I wanted. I got the Magpul sights to go along with it and I will use them until I score some nice Troys or something else.

I had a similar choice in front of me. I ended up waiting on the local WM to get the more basic LE6920-MP in stock for $1147 and then grabbed it at first chance. They are coming in and my local store had a couple in stock when I bought mine this week. The BCM options as well as the DD suggestions are all great. Between those three, I'd grab one at the best price that includes the feature set you want to end up with. I wanted a basic carbine and waited for a quality model at a decent price to present locally.

I was at Walmart today and had a Colt 6920 dressed out in magpul in my hands, the price was $1167 plus tax. I was thinking hard about buying it. It was between the Colt or a BCM online. I had the Colt in one hand and my phone in the other hand with G&R Tactial website on my phone. I had all my credit card info typed in, all I had to do was hit pay now. I guess I wanted the BCM more because I hit the pay now button. Can't wait until I get it in my hands.

I picked up my colt at walmart a few weeks ago in the next town up from me. Then a week later I went to my local walmart and they had 4 colts! Standard 6920, 2 magpuls black and fde and the socom. They also had a bushmaster and sig.

Id say get the colt 100%

Cant go wrong with bcm congrats! That or one other company will be my next build!
