If that list is to be believed Hornady doesn't plan to make any ammo at all.

Won't let me open the attachment, but wonder if they are redirecting their lines to produce ammo? Plant shutdown?

Hornady has been candid & responsive to forums and phone calls with info in the past, may be worth a call to confirm.

The letter from hornady states because of Time wasted on changeover of calipers they are shutting down the list to produce more of one type. I can imagine 223, 308,9mm, &45 not being popular enough to stop producing them to ramp up production on something not on the list...

Makes sense. They were very candid with the Grendel community, and we learned from that dialog that they run fairly long batches. It might be 3-4 months before they hit less popular items again when a batch sells out.

A while back the Grendel community worked group buys to get larger runs of certain bullets optimized for Grendel, and Hornady cooperated. Same input on Brass.

They won't miss-optimize sales though, so either they are still short on the mainstream bullets or feel they have enough in the pipeline to stop for a bit.

I was very impressed with their candor and willingness to dialog with the Grendel community and mfg's.

At least they're still making the 6mm 105gr bthp match bullet!

Not sure when they posted this, but it seems they have something else to say about it.

This appears to be aimed at the "guvment is sucking up all the ammo" memes.

Ammo components are like any batch process, startup kills you as it often produces slightly out of spec stuff. (Love those cheap nosler blems for plinking though)

Given 9mm dies, cases, everything are still in very short supply I'd not be surprised that they dedicated some lines to just 9mm centric stuff for a while.

.45 would surprise me, as I see CCI and similar .45 in good supply, etc. IE: Demand does not appear to be that high.

It's an interesting list.

According to the letter, it's a suspension for the remainder of the year, which is only six months less production downtime. A negative impact of this decision assumes that the ammo and components were in much use to begin with. It also assumes that the item was scheduled for production sometime later this year. Given some of those on the list, I doubt they were run more than once or twice a year and aren't consumed in volume. Some of those are surely the boxes that have been gathering dust on otherwise empty shelves.

That's little comfort if you're the guy needing one of those skus, but in a larger sense this is likely no big deal for the overwhelming majority of folks who will have additional flow of their needs.

Hornady is also an OEM supplier, and I suspect their contracts and relationships with others are weighing in here as well.

I'm surprised they waited so long to implement this, unless they're just making it official now.

Even if its true, I dont even care. Considering they restrict their premium defensive loads to LE only and even confiscate red box ammo from civilians Id rather spend my money on Federal,Speer or Blackhills.

The first letter is not contradicted by the second.
Sorry. It's sound business.

Product Availability Update
Hornady Makes Plans to Increase Production Volume

For over half a year, Hornady Manufacturing, along with the rest of the shooting sports industry, has experienced an unbelievable spike in demand. This dramatic increase in demand is unprecedented. As stated earlier this year in our Product Availability FAQ we have been continuously growing for a number of years; adding people, equipment and manufacturing space as rapidly as we can. We are producing and shipping product at record levels and are continually looking to grow and improve our ability to fulfill orders. But the current state of the industry is such that our increase in shipments this year is overshadowed by a 200% increase in demand.

One area that we have identified that will enable us to increase production, is the minimization of machinery downtime. The largest period of downtime our machines experience is during change over and retooling to convert a machine from manufacturing one bullet or cartridge to another. Under normal market conditions, we can keep the supply chain full by making popular items on a regular basis and keeping specialty or less-used products on a seasonal basis. However, with demand at record levels, it has become difficult to justify shutting down a machine to change it over to produce a product of less demand. Therefore, we are temporarily suspending some items in order to focus our efforts on the most popular and highest demand products and ship more total product.

We realize that many of the suspended items are going to disappoint some of our customers. We have painstakingly reviewed our order status and order history and unfortunately had to make some tough decisions. It wasn't easy, but we know that we will do a better job of servicing the industry as a whole by focusing on the items of highest demand.

We are not alone; this is effectively already happening throughout our industry, but is accomplished through selective manufacture with no notification to the industry. We are simply making every effort to be up-front about our plans to maximize production.

Again, this is only temporary. This is not a permanent suspension. We will continue to push as hard as we can to meet the demand of our industry and will produce our full catalog of items as soon as we can. Please know that nobody wants to produce more and get our product to into your hands more than we do.

And lastly, we feel compelled to address some of the conspiracy theories that we have seen posted. NO, this is not a conspiracy effort to shape the industry, nor is it controlled by the government. We are simply being forthright about our manufacturing plans and our efforts to supply MORE product to the very hungry shooting sports industry.

We truly appreciate your patience during this period of time. Thank you for your understanding.

The Team at Hornady

That's got me totally confused, too. Not to mention the premium ammo only to LEO thing?

I guess all that 75gr TAP I have is contraband.

Lol, agreed. I suppose since mine isn't dept. issue the 1200 TAP rounds I have are illegal? I guess I'll cuff myself and turn myself in today:D

Hornady reps are doing house to house searches. They hit me last night. But I don't have any of their ammo.

Who confiscates "red box" ammo from civilians?

Someone had some pressure problems with some .223 pressured red box TAP and sent it in to hornady for inspection. Hornady then replied with "you shouldnt even have this ammunition, its for LE only" and then grilled the customer as to where they purchased it and refused reimburse or send the customer new ammo. I believe the issue was resolved but the fact that they treat customers this way made me never buy another box of hornady again.

My experience deals with the reloading bullets and components department which may be separate from the ammo depart., but they were A+ in two separate issues and rival that of Dillon's customer service. I am not saying that I doubt the above situation, but if true, they may have caught a newbie to the section who thought it was designed for LEO only just like a newbie at Colt might think a restricted LEO/MiL only is not able to be owned by civilians.

I'm going to guess .223/5.56mm is going to stay in production.

Directed at no one in particular:

During my call to Hornady, they advised that they would be happy to handle customer calls as they come in with concerns about specific skus. However, understand that they are getting a bit flooded, so be patient. They have also published information to the web which will answer the questions of most.

Rather than post rumor or speculation, please check the list. Or call in, and post what you confirmed with Hornady.
